Mount Vernon earns its revenge vs. New Ro

Josh Thomson
February
8

The rematch between Mount Vernon and New Rochelle was a game the Knights waited for. They proved it, winning 67-49 behind 25 points from senior Taylor Palmer.

The West Virginia-bound guard believed her team is now ready to begin its defense of the Class AA title.

“It seems like a while, but we’re refreshed and ready to start it again,” Palmer said. “Everything starts from scratch.”

Mount Vernon went ahead 14-2 but New Ro scored the next 13 points and eventually went into halftime even 26-all. Mount Vernon scored 11 straight points to open the second half and never again trailed.

Palmer played a crucial role against a team that normally gives her the most trouble. she made four 3’s and was the difference in the game.

“Palmer was the difference,” Huguenots coach Bruce Daniele said. “It was the best game she’s ever had against us. She showed how good she is.”

Thanks to Carp for the thoughts. Be sure to check out his story tomorrow.

Barefoot in Nanuet (Updated, with score)

Carp
February
2

Nanuet coach Carlos Fidalgo and his staff will go barefoot this afternoon, on Senior Day at NHS. It’s part of a service project to raise money for the Samaritans Feet charity. You can read about it here. Roughly 300,000 kids world wide don’t have a single pair of shoes. Ron Hunter, the coach at IUPUI presented the project to collect new shoes (or money for new shoes) and distribute them to children in need.

The event is spearheaded by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

If you can’t attend the game and you want to get involved, go to the site, OR text the word “shoes” to 85944 to donate $5  (billed to your cell phone) . Manufacturers will donate a pair of shoes for that $5.

Also, the game—against Tappan Zee at 4:15—honors a pretty special group of senior players who won the Section 1, state and Federation Class B championships last season. Lauren Kahn could return from what was first feared to be a season-ending injury.
—————————

PM UPDATE: K.C. Jentzen scored 24 points, Nikki Saponaro 17, and Lauren Kahn 13 as Nanuet (13-3) defeated TZ 64-52 on Senior night. Tappan Zee (8-8) was led by Regina Argenzio and Megan Curran, with 16 apiece, and Devona Paul with 11.
