The 2006-07 girls basketball season begins for real this week and right along with it comes The Sixth Man, my first full-time foray into the blogosphere. So without further ado, here’s the idea behind this blog and what it will hopefully mean for you:
1. To make the girls basketball beat in the LoHud interactive. You  the hardcore player, parent, fan or coach  will now have a way to both discuss and learn some things about the local hoops scene, beyond the newspaper.
2. To put an unlimited amount of space at my fingertips to cover, discuss, analyze and rate your teams in more depth than ever. There will be my impressions of games and analysis of news. There will be top 10 lists. There will be awards. And I honestly will answer as many of your questions as possible.
3. And, last, to have a lot of fun traveling with you from here, the final days of the preseason, to here…

…the final days of the postseason.
In case you didn’t notice  although I’m sure you did  the above photo comes from high above the County Center. It was taken during the 2006 White Plains-North Rockland Class AA semifinal. It’s also representative of the view I hope to provide here, a different one than you’re used to seeing, or at least an extra one.
So are there any questions, comments, or thoughts? I hope so. That’s what I’ll be here for, from now all the way through March, when the gold ball, like the one you see at the top of this post, becomes what everyone’s talking about.
Check in soon…we’ll be back with more later.

Josh Thomson has done some of everything since joining The Journal News in March 2003. He began working for the Gannett weeklies during the winter of 2002 as a freelance writer. He joined the daily staff soon after and has since covered various high school and pro sports. Away from sportswriting, Josh lives in Westchester and spends his free time either with his fiancee, Sarah, or expertly managing his various championship-winning fantasy sports teams. He's visited 21 major-league baseball stadiums and insists that Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are the best by far. Josh graduated from Carmel High School in 1998, then went to Boston University, where, in 2002, he received a degree in communications with a minor in history.

This is a great thing that you are doing Josh! I’m looking forward to reading your writings.
Perhaps I’m being a little critical, but…...Are you sure you want to call the girls basketball blog “The Sixth Man” ?
How about something a little more gender specific (or neutral, at least)?
Rich, Thanks.
Eye, The title is not just a reference to basketball, but a reference to a man (Me) being near the action (or the bench, if you will) as The Sixth Man for local girls basketball.
Give me some credit. It’s at least a little clever, right…
People already being critical?!? People just be excited that the girl’s game actually has a blog. Good luck Josh. I’ll chime in now and again to try and keep things sane.
Josh, I understood the reference and I appreciate your effort. Call it what you will. I hope your blog can draw out the fans, players, coaches, and assorted kooks to deliver some interesting opinions and occasional inside information.
Congratulations, Draftboy. You’re the first to blatantly suck-up to the blog author. Let’s see how sane you are when we start debating top ten lists…...
I am very excited to see that you guys are continuing this into other sports especially after the success of Kevin’s blog for football. My wife is a coach and we look forward to following the season through you
don’t worry eye, I’ll be here
Great, it should be a fun season.
Josh, the blog clock is three hours off….can we get that corrected? I’d like to start of on the right foot here.
Eye, I will check about the blog clock. I’m sure it can be fixed.
Probably would rather be in Cali, right???
This is such good news. Any coverage for girls/womens sports is greatly appreciated. This will be an interesting season. Good Luck with your blog.
Glad to see the girls getting some coverage. My daughter plays for Clarkstown North. They are extremely young, 4 seniors and the balance of the team is in 10th grade. Who are the top teams this year? I assume Lourdes and White Plains, but who else should we keep an eye on?
In the Paint…
I plan on added previews for Classes AA, A, B and C during the week and will reveal my LoHud.com Top 10 on Thursday. Check back then and there will be more info on the teams to watch.
Until then, you seem to have a pretty good grasp. I think North and North Rockland will battle for their league, but WP, Lourdes, Scarsdale and maybe Ossining and Ursuline should be dangerous from around the section.
Josh,
Great idea. I am sure you will continue to do a great job. Look forward to reading the blog.
