Lakeland wins Yorktown tourney title

December
30

Lakeland won the title tonight, beating Greeley 60-28 and doing so in convincing fashion. The Hornets led 14-1 five minutes in and just kept cruising from there. Amy Voelkel, according to Alex Myers, outscored Greeley herself in the first half, 19-18. Voelkel, as I’ve mentioned about a few others, most notably Kim Adams, will just get better and better as the season goes along and basketball becomes second nature. Voelkel plays a lot of basketball over the summer, but she played field hockey and helped Lakeland win the state championship this fall. Basketball was probably not something she did on a daily basis, but it appears now that’s a distant memory.

Freshman center Tori Jorosz had seven blocks…and continues to be an emerging force. Sara Mirabile led Greeley with 13 points, although her team as a whole had just 10 points in the second half and four in the fourth quarter.

If you were there, feel free to add here. Enjoy your New Year’s Eve…

For your reading pleasure, Saturday notebooks

December
30

As I said last night, my three-day vacation begins in earnest today, but here are the links for today’s notebooks:

In the North, Somers’ Jaki Goldner is torching opponents and drawing the interest of recruiters. Unless you are involved in AAU ball or caught any of the Empire State Games, Goldner, an athletic 6-foot-2 center in the Emma Markley mold, is probably the best player you don’t know. She’ll likely be one of only two scholarship players in Section 1 this season.

For the rest of Westchester, Dobbs Ferry welcomed back Lauren Emerson yesterday. Emerson tore her meniscus in the preseason — one of the countless personal battles she’s waged during her high school career.
welcome-back.jpg
If you know anything about Lauren, please wish her well. She’s been through a lot on and off the court. There’s also the mention of Ardsley’s 5-2 start, among other things.

In Rockland, Jake discusses the turnaround of Clarkstown South, which is already 5-1 after going winless all of last season. And North Rockland’s Brianna Peterson was named the Rockland Scholar Athlete of the Week.

From yesterday, here’s Jake’s story on the Slam Dunk title game, and here’s his story on the consolation

Former Demon Deacon Alex Myers, in his last assignment before heading to the Orange Bowl to watch Wake Forest beat Louisville, will cover tonight’s Yorktown tourney championship. I’ll let you know how it went down before I sit down to watch the Giants season come to an embarrassing close.

Slam Dunk final: Minisink Valley 38, Pearl River 35

December
29

We have a web update on our website — a postgame update filed by my colleague Jake.

Sounds like a defensive struggle (read: UGLY), but that may be presumptious on my part. I wasn’t there — had to cover the Jets this morning, then file my Saturday notebooks this afternoon — and would love you to clue me in on what happened. If you were there, drop us a line here…

*****************************************************

In other action…

— I nailed another prediction almost to the point, as Ursuline beat Lourdes in the Slam Dunk consolation. Again, details would be appreciated.

— I didn’t mention this last night, but Albertus Magnus had a solid 49-34 victory over Maria Regina in the Albertus tourney final to keep the Falcons undefeated.

— Another late update, but Carmel and Mahopac both swept their games over Brewster and Kennedy in the Ronnie Weaver Memorial Tournament at Carmel High school on Wednesday and Thursday.

— At the Yorktown tournament tonight, Greeley beat Yorktown and Lakeland beat New Ro in the semis. Greeley and Lakeland will play in the championship, this just two weeks after they played a league game before Christmas.

Details, details, details. I was MIA at each and every game I mentioned above and would like to hear what you thought…Have a good weekend everyone.

Week 5: LoHud.com Top 10, Girls Basketball

December
29

Well, my early-season bragging has officially come to a humbling end.
ashamed.jpg
Since we last met in the land of Top 10s, North Rockland (twice), Ursuline and Lourdes all lost. The most surprising, of course, is North Rockland, which has lost to Albertus and Putnam Valley after I proclaimed it on a level alone with White Plains and Lakeland. Hopefully, you can all forget I ever said that, particularly the Albertus and Put Valley communities. OBVIOUSLY, I was just kidding around. Obviously…

Looking at it now, I don’t really know how to figure spots 3 through 10 with any certainty. I expect them to fluctuate rapidly on a weekly basis, leading to rapid changes, leading me to distance myself from my predictions and comments in an even more rapid fashion.

Allow me to start now…

1. White Plains (7-1): All dressed up at the County Center and nowhere to go. Must’ve been beyond annoyed watching last night’s Slam Dunk action.
2. Lakeland (4-0): Tackling the Yorktown tournament beginning today. Every game presents risk, but an undefeated regular season is not out of the question.
3. Scarsdale (6-1): Resting comfortably on break and begins second half of season against Greeley.
4. Pearl River (4-1): Pirates are so solid and meeting with Albertus after Slam Dunk will be one of the best games in Rockland all season.
5. Albertus Magnus (5-0): Falcons beating North Rockland really unsettled the landscape. I don’t know if anyone else has played better so far this season.
6. North Rockland (5-3): Two losses in a row is a huge surprise for a team this talented. Rebounding (from the losses, not missed shots) will present a huge challenge but is certainly possible.
7. Ursuline (3-2): Seriously, the Koalas are 13 decent seconds from moving to fifth. But that’s basketball.
8. Our Lady of Lourdes (1-3): Totally bailing on Warriors would be a huge mistake. They have too much history and have faced a brutal schedule. Plus, I still think they’d be favored over anyone below them.
9. Haldane (5-1): Blue Devils among the idle, as is…
10. Briarcliff (7-1): Hamlin family among those who frequented the County Center last night and among those who did so in street clothes.
ON THE BUBBLE: Mount Vernon (6-1), Maria Regina (7-3), Beacon (7-1).

Let me know what you think…

*****************************************************

Please check out my feature today on Irvington coach Gina Maher, who is the longest tenured basketball coach in the LoHud, boys or girls. I only know her through one previous meeting and my interview for the story this week, but from everything I was told by those around her Maher sounds like an incredibly important figure in the Irvington community.

I ask a lot of coaches about their former players off in college. Some have updates, while others don’t. Some speak to them often, others don’t. But with Maher it’s not just a quick bio of “Where are they now?” She KNOWS them. Their jobs. Their husbands. Their children. Everything.

Among the many great quotes and anecdotes I didn’t use in the story says as much as anything. Peggy Hickey, the mom of Carey Hickey, the Dobbs point guard, played for Maher and the two still keep dinner dates. I asked Peggy Hickey whether or not her girls (Beth, former Dobbs and Manhattanville star, and Carey) know Maher and she said this: “Oh yeah. When I go to dinner with her, they want to go with me.”

Can you say anything better about someone than that?

Slam Dunk semifinal wrapup

December
28

Before I get to my thoughts on the games, I’ll tell you: I read every comment on the previous post and I appreciate each one. I think you all offered good potential matchups and made very intelligent points on the state of the girls bracket.

Timster, for instance, asked why the boys and girls draws don’t consist of an equal number of teams in this day and age of Title IX. Honestly, the same thought crossed my mind this afternoon as I drove to the County Center and I don’t know the answer. My guess, however, and it sounds like a pretty good reason, is that extra games would crowd the schedule.

I convinced myself of this and found it to be a fairly acceptable reason, but as I write this I’m having second thoughts. Yesterday, the County Center played host to two challenge games (one boys, one girls) and four boys games, all of them held 1:45 apart. Same today, except the girls semis replaced the challenge games. Conceivably, the Slam Dunk could have a full field for both, but games would have to begin at 9 a.m. and not end until after 11 p.m. Now, I may sound like aging producer Bob Ryan from Entourage here, but does that sound like something you might be interested in?

Let me know. It may be too much of an undertaking for the County Center. Maybe not. I don’t know either way, but it’s the only solution I have. Unfortunately, I have zero say in the matter.

Also, there was lots of displeasure spewed about the makeup of the girls draw. While I cannot, and will not, sit here and tell you which of this year’s teams should or should not have been included (because each is worthy in its own way), I will agree that the level of basketball is not as high as it could be. Some people contend that the girls don’t draw and to some extent it’s true. No girls game would match Stepinac-Peekskill of Wednesday night or White Plains-Peekskill championships of seasons past.

But just take the 2006 New Rochelle-Scarsdale Class AA semifinal for example. That was one of the most crowded games of championship week last winter and proved to me that the interest in the girls games is there provided the matchups are quality. The problem is, there are no girls teams like the Peekskill boys who organizers can throw in the field and know it’ll produce a big crowd. That makes a difference.

When I first learned the field, I called tournament organizer Lou DiMello. He told me Lourdes is the host school in the girls draw and that Ursuline has long been a participant. Pearl River and Minisink Valley were added because they were both strong teams. I asked him specifically about why White Plains wasn’t included despite winning back to back Section 1 titles and its status as the section’s top program. He told me WP never won this tournament the last two seasons — a true, albeit flawed point. In 2004, White Plains beat Lourdes in the semis, then lost to a Mount Vernon team that beat Maria Regina 69-20 in the other semi and would have beaten every team in this year’s field by 25 points or more. It then lost to St. John the Baptist last season, one of the best teams in the state. White Plains was not better than those teams, but no one in Section 1 was either.

But this isn’t about White Plains as much as it’s about getting compelling matchups. They’ll come if the girls field is expanded. Lakeland-White Plains would’ve been fun, but Haldane-Lourdes, North Rockland-Ursuline, or Pearl River-Albertus Magnus would’ve really added to the girls season.

Still, no matter the field, championships like tomorrow’s are unavoidable. Minisink and Pearl River have already played this season (Pearl River won in its own tournament championship earlier this month). It’s a great game for basketball lovers — Pearl River may be the best coached girls team around and Minisink’s Stefanie Dolson may be the biggest and most promising player fans will see all season — but it just won’t draw. It’s a shame.

On to my thoughts…

PEARL RIVER 55, LOURDES 45: No, reader Nick Bucci is not on my payroll. In fact, I picked his daughter’s team to lose so I’m glad he took it so well. But, yes, I did manage to almost call the score on this one. If only I was paid for correct picks…(I had it 59-48.)

Anyway, I was impressed with Lourdes improvement since the Scarsdale game. Much, much better. I don’t have a box score on me and I didn’t cover the game, but the Warriors bench chipped in often and did well. The unit helped them take an early lead they held at times throughout the first three quarters. However, what else can you say about Pearl River? The Pirates continue to take the court prepared to win basketball games. Lorraine Moylan is a great, great coach. Her players play with great poise and that’s a testament to how comfortable they are in what is asked of them. Kaitlyn O’Keefe, in particular, played very well today and helped Pearl River keep the score close until her teammates shots started falling in the second half.

MINISINK VALLEY 53, URSULINE 48: At 45-42 with 13 seconds left and the ball in Ursuline’s hands, I had the beginnings of a pretty smart night. But the Koalas let my prediction die in those final seconds. They had a turnover, a foul, missed the defensive rebound, let a shooter get free, and allowed two tying free throws. And that was in the final 13 seconds. Overtime wasn’t much better.

My reaction to all this? A little bit of disappointment. Beth Wooters felt a little more strongly, so upset about how her experienced players quaked under the pressure. Possibly, Ursuline can build from this, but it’ll be tough to stomach for a while. I’m interested to see how the consolation goes against Lourdes, in what now looks like an old school dream matchup at the County Center.

My championship prediction… Undoubtedly, I think Pearl River is the favorite tomorrow. Not only have the Pirates already beaten Minisink, I think they were probably much more hesistant about facing Lourdes, a team which has beaten them so many times in big games, including the 2006 Class A championship game. Without that hanging over them, I think the Pirates will overcome Dolson (20 points, 14 boards, 8 blocks vs. Ursuline) and her supporting cast. Conversely, I like Ursuline’s size in the consolation. O’Keefe for MVP, with Kerri Confrey, Dolson, and whoever stands out tomorrow for Ursuline and Lourdes (one apiece) for all-tournament.

Championship — PEARL RIVER 55, MINISINK VALLEY 50
Consolation — URSULINE 48, LOURDES 40

Let me know what you thought about tonight and who you like tomorrow.

Slam Dunk preview

December
28

Here’s what I think today, and who I like, in the first round of the Slam Dunk and beyond…

GAME 1: URSULINE VS. MINISINK VALLEY, 2:45 P.M.
What you should know… Ursuline is 3-1 after a 6-14 season in which it did not make the playoffs. Minisink Valley is the defending Section 9 Class AA champs. Minisink lost to White Plains in the regional round of the state tournament last March and lost to Pearl River earlier this season.
Who you should watch… On Ursuline, it’s 6-foot senior Molly McGlynn. She averaged around 4.0 PPG last season but has upped her scoring average by 10 points so far. McGlynn’s turnaround has had a lot to do with the Koalas good start. She gives them a force in the paint and has proven she teams well with 6-foot sophomore Shelby Sferra. On Minisink, it’s 6-foot-4 ninth-grader Stefanie Dolson. Dolson is still very raw, but her sheer size is something you just don’t see on the high school level.
What to expect… With three legit 6-footers, Ursuline is well-equipped for this matchup. As long as the Koalas guards protect the ball, they should be OK. After losing to Pearl River, Minisink will be out to prove it is good enough to compete with Section 1’s elite.
Prediction…URSULINE 64, MINISINK 62

GAME 2: OUR LADY OF LOURDES VS. PEARL RIVER, 6:15 P.M.
What you should know… Lourdes is 1-2 after winning the Class A championship, its 14th straight Section 1 crown. The season is young, but the Warriors appear to be at their most vulnerable. Pearl River lost last week to St. Peter’s of Staten Island, but has started the season strong once again. The Pirates gave Lourdes a tough run in the Class A championship before falling in the final minute. Now they have a chance to exact a small measure of revenge.
Who you should watch… On Lourdes, it’s senior guard Jacinda Williams. The University of New Hampshire-bound point guard has a bundle of talent but has been misfiring from the perimeter early this season. If she can turn it around, teams will struggle to stop her, and probably struggle to stop Lourdes. On Pearl River, it’s also the point guard, senior Kerry Confrey. Confrey was relentless against Lourdes in the championship game last season. Now at point guard, she will need to break the Warriors press and keep her teammates calm in what is a very comfortable environment for the opponent.
What to expect… Pearl River has proven its capable of winning big games this season, whether those games present matchup problems or not. This game will not, and I think that actually favors Lourdes. The Warriors have struggled with post players so far, but won’t face anyone here it can’t handle. Still, at this point in the season Pearl River is better. If the Pirates make their shots, revenge should be theirs.
Prediction…PEARL RIVER 59, LOURDES 48

CONSOLATION prediction… LOURDES 52, MINISINK 49 (OT)
CHAMPIONSHIP prediction… PEARL RIVER 66, URSULINE 58

*************************************************

Question: Let me know what your dream Slam Dunk matchups are. Two first round games between any teams you wish, followed by the championship game you’d most like to see…

I’ll return tonight with recaps of both games and tomorrow morning with a preview of the championship. That’s all for now…

New state rankings

December

Also, I pass along the new state rankings.

I ask you to please not hold me accountable. I don’t understand how or why the teams are arranged and/or rearranged and do not take part in the selection process. Section 1 teams dropped considerably despite not losing. Also, the records are not very up-to-date.

Lakeland, for instance, has looked utterly dominant and dropped five spots.

Player of the week, Week 4

December
26

There weren’t many games last week at all. Most teams had one or two games and because of the scarcity I thought Jackie Alemany of Scarsdale had the inside track because she had the best individual performance (25 points in three quarters vs. Lourdes when it wasn’t even definite she would play). However, when I checked out the schedule a little deeper, I found Hastings, had played three games, won two, and received two dominant performances from Nora Skrelji. It led to…

Player of the week, Week 4: Nora Skrelji, Hastings — The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 24 PPG last week, including a 33-point performance vs. Hen Hud and a 28-point, 17-rebound game vs. Edgemont. Skrelji continues to rank in the top 10 in Section 1 in points and rebounds.

RUNNERS-UP: Jackie Alemany, Scarsdale; Tareka Cesar, Spring Valley; Jess Harris, Hen Hud; Sarah Benischek, Lakeland; Angelei Aguirre, White Plains; Shelby Coon, Briarcliff; Brittany Shields, Haldane.

Feel free to add anyone I didn’t include that you think was deserving of mention.

**********************************************

Looking ahead:

1. Thursday: I’ll have a preview of the Slam Dunk in the morning, then my thoughts on the two first round games (Ursuline-Minisink Valley and Lourdes-Pearl River) after they finish.
2. Friday: A new top 10 and a look at my Friday feature in the morning; a wrap up of the championship (and what we learned from this year’s Slam Dunk) after the game.
3. Saturday: Links to the newest notebooks.
4. Monday-Tuesday: League previews and predictions.

I’ll have other stuff throughout the week as well.
