New state rankings

December

Also, “I pass along the new state rankings.”:http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/reference/current_polls_bkw_061227.shtml

I ask you to please not hold me accountable. I don’t understand how or why the teams are arranged and/or rearranged and do not take part in the selection process. Section 1 teams dropped considerably despite not losing. Also, the records are not very up-to-date.

Lakeland, for instance, has looked utterly dominant and dropped five spots.

    Josh,

You say you don’t participate in the state poll selection. You are a sportswriter. Have you considered offering your expertise to the NYSSWA on behalf of Section 1? I’m sure Neil Kerr of the Syracuse Post-Standard would be grateful for your assistance.
What I’m wondering is what North Rockland has to do to get ranked in the state’s Top 20. The Raiders have only lost, by 4 points, to White Plains. Rush-Henrietta, which beat White Plains in winning the state championship ceratinly has not lost any respect statewide. Perhaps Section 1 does not have an advocate for girls hoops with the NYSSWA. You could be that guy, Josh.

30, I know for a fact that Section 1 does have someone who assists with the state rankings but I have to tell you: I don’t put too much stock in them. They are unpredictable and, at least in some cases, it is impossible to compare teams from different areas that have no common opponents.

Also, after North Rockland’s loss to Albertus it’d be tough for them to be ranked in the top 20. Sorry, but it’s true.

My problem with it lies in the unpredictability. Lakeland, as I mentioned in the post, should not have dropped after how well it has played. Also, in my opinion, Lakeland and Haldane should be the highest-ranked teams in their respective classes, followed by White Plains, Pearl River and Albertus in their respective classes, and maybe North Rockland and Scarsdale in Class AA and Briarcliff in Class B.

I thought the BCS was bad this is absurd!

Whoever does the state rankings must be brain dead or simply puts out info that makes his or her teams feel good. No current info nor any semblance of reason makes the rankings meaningless. Why bother putting up the link?

the state rankings are fine and will better reflect the talent of the teams in each class as the season plays out. it may be too early to rely on them just yet, but in a couple of weeks they will be much more accurate. it’s just like any other ranking system—in the beginning there is a lot of guessing. i don’t think there are any hidden agendas to favor certain teams. what purpose would that even serve? josh, you should keep posting them.

I really enjoy reading about all the fine young High School Atheletes, I think that this is the best thing to happen to High School sports in a long time. But you guys haven’t talked about that little Freshmen ant Ramapo High School up in Rockland County, I Heard that she’s bring back life to the once dead Ramapo Girls Basketball Team, I can’t wait to see Ramapo vs N.Rockland, I’ll see if the Ramapo Girls are for real or not, even if the loss (how bad), This Freshmen still has alot of years to turn the program around, I’m sure the sport world would love to hear about this. It’s always good to hear about young kids coming up to Varsity and doing well, I’m hear father and I’m proud of hear and the team. Thanks Folks and have a nice New Year

Firstly, I want to thank Josh for starting this site so that all of us hoop junkies can talk about the best sport around. NOW, a couple of things, the state poll is a very lose attempt to give us an idea of what is going on in the rest of the state. Josh is right we do have representation in that poll ( I know the person well ) but don’t take it to much to heart. What really counts is sectional play, regionals and of course the state final four. Also, sometimes I think we get to rapped up in rankings and polls and not enough with teaching the sport.

Interesting that Magnus does not get mentioned and Briarcliff’s record as of 12/26 is 7 and 1 yet the poll says 2-0? What’s the point if the info on which the poll is based is so outdated and inaccurate?
