Player of the week, Week 4
-
- December
- 26
There weren’t many games last week at all. Most teams had one or two games and because of the scarcity I thought Jackie Alemany of Scarsdale had the inside track because she had the best individual performance (25 points in three quarters vs. Lourdes when it wasn’t even definite she would play). However, when I checked out the schedule a little deeper, I found Hastings, had played three games, won two, and received two dominant performances from Nora Skrelji. It led to…
Player of the week, Week 4: Nora Skrelji, Hastings  The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 24 PPG last week, including a 33-point performance vs. Hen Hud and a 28-point, 17-rebound game vs. Edgemont. Skrelji continues to rank in the top 10 in Section 1 in points and rebounds.
RUNNERS-UP: Jackie Alemany, Scarsdale; Tareka Cesar, Spring Valley; Jess Harris, Hen Hud; Sarah Benischek, Lakeland; Angelei Aguirre, White Plains; Shelby Coon, Briarcliff; Brittany Shields, Haldane.
Feel free to add anyone I didn’t include that you think was deserving of mention.

Looking ahead:
1. Thursday: I’ll have a preview of the Slam Dunk in the morning, then my thoughts on the two first round games (Ursuline-Minisink Valley and Lourdes-Pearl River) after they finish.
2. Friday: A new top 10 and a look at my Friday feature in the morning; a wrap up of the championship (and what we learned from this year’s Slam Dunk) after the game.
3. Saturday: Links to the newest notebooks.
4. Monday-Tuesday: League previews and predictions.
I’ll have other stuff throughout the week as well.

Josh: Where was the North Rockland v Magnus game held? The shcedule says Nr but the phote seems to be Magnus?
How come no one was @ the Albertus-North Rockland game. Excellent performance by Maura Powers (5-3s) and Ashley Uber. A B size beats a AA and hardly anyone hears about it. Neither one gets even a mention as player of the week. No. Rockland is touted as the new dominat AA school and your reporter can’t cover the game.
brandi…The game was at North Rockland according to the Section 1 website and the story written in our paper. I wasn’t there for sure, so I have to go with the info at hand.
chris mulcahy…We did, as I mentioned above, have a reporter at the game. You can find the story on “our LoHud girls basketball page.”:http://LoHud.com/girls hoops The reporter you mention, Rockland writer Jake Thomases, was on vacation, but Erin Bruehl filled in. If you missed the story I’m sorry, but please check before insisting we weren’t there.
From what it sounded like, Albertus had contributions from all its players. Ashley Huber and Lauren Capul on defense, Powers from the outside, etc. It was a great win, but it seemed like everyone contributed more than just one player. If you were there, who would you have chosen?
Lastly, no doubt it was a tremendous win. Unfortunately, I wasn’t around all weekend b/c of the holiday. Give us a little credit though: We’ve covered three of Albertus’ four games so far, which isn’t bad.
I’d like to add Jennifer Canale (Albertus) to your player of the week. She scored 15 points in the game on Saturday versus North Rockland. She has been consistently scoring in double digits, and is a good all around player. She is ranked #9 in top scorers. On December 26th Albertus won big against Nanuet in a Christmas Tournament and she scored between 18 and 20 points. There was no mention of that game today. But the game played before it between Regina and Clarkstown North was covered.
Deb, the reason the Maria Regina and North score was in the paper was because one of the coaches called it in to them. Either the Magnus coach didn’t call it in or the game ended too late and the paper already went to print. But if that was the case they could still put it in for Thursdays paper, but I don’t see it there either. Hope that helps.
