Adams continues roll, so does White Plains

January
30

I don’t know how many games I’ve seen since these teams played last, but not much has changed between White Plains and Scarsdale, as the Tigers won 68-51 tonight at Scarsdale.

The game unfolded much like the last one, when White Plains won by 20 at home. The Tigers zone defense collapsed on Jackie Alemany in the paint, and charged at Christine Yankou on the perimeter, hoping to either make the other Raiders beat them or to force Alemany and Yankou away from their respective comfort zones. It worked. Alemany had some success (23 points), but overall the White Plains defense frustrated Scarsdale into turnovers and poor shots (like 5-of-24 shooting from 3-point land). Umm…just check the photo by our own Frank Becerra Jr.

alemany-def.jpg

On the other end, however, was the biggest story: Kim Adams continues to play as well as anyone. The senior guard had 28 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field and simply dominated the game when she was on the floor.

Afterward, I asked Scarsdale coach Luke Vaccaro whether or not he’s seen a difference in Adams now as opposed to the last three seasons.
adams.jpg He told me he was especially impressed when he saw her play in the City on Jan. 20th (when White Plains beat Holy Trinity). “She was the best player on the floor,” Vaccaro said.

That only continued tonight. “This is the best I’ve ever seen her play,” Vaccaro added.

Here are some other tidbits from the game:
1. White Plains made 23 of 28 free throws. That’s pretty nasty. Liz Flooks made 11 in a row before missing her last free throw of the game.
2. Scarsdale freshman Danielle Feigin shot very well off the bench. Feigin made 4-of-7 3’s in very limited action off the bench.
3. White Plains had 14 assists on 20 baskets. That’s also pretty nasty.
4. Paige Sprewell had a nice game. 12 points, eight rebounds.
5. If Scarsdale wants to be a playoff sleeper… then I have advice. Don’t get into an early-round game with White Plains.

In other action…

1. Carmel beat Mahopac 50-45. Closer than last time, but not quite close enough for the Indians.
2. John Jay beat Greeley 43-38. The Quakers had won the first meeting between the two.
3. New Ro hung reasonably close, but lost the battle of the Queen City 44-33. Ursuline has won 8 of 10 heading into Mount Vernon-Scarsdale-White Plains stretch.
4. Somers’ sister tandem of Jaki and Elissa Goldner combined for 36 points in a win over Port Chester. Not a bad night to be Mr. and Mrs. Goldner.

Gotta like the play of the freshman point guard from Scarsdale. This kid is smooth as silk and seems to be gaining confidence.

Kim Adams played off the charts in the first half, she was hitting three pointers from 25 feet. Between Kim Adams, Liz Flooks and Angelie Aguire it’s tough to figure out who to key on. Any one of them has the ability to carry the team. Put Paige Spreewell into the mix, who keeps showing an ever expanding offensive game and you have a team that will be a very tough out come sectionals.

Now a question Josh. Which school do you think plays the best music at their games. You might want to put this one up for a vote.

  2. Josh Thomson

WP Fan…I don’t have much to add about the Tigers. For the very reasons you mention, I’ve never considered them anything but a serious favorite to three-peat, followed in some order by North Rockland, Ursuline and Lourdes.

Now, you ask about music??? Well that’s a whole different story. At a girls game — and this perhaps is an extension of the equality conversation we had last month — fans are lucky to get music at all. Clearly, White Plains and Scarsdale would be among the contenders for any such title because they have music run constantly throughout the game. Few other have that.

I guess my question is, can anyone name some other schools that have that — particularly music in and out of timeouts? I can’t think of many.

  3. Blue Devil

Josh, if I make it to the NBA will you mention my daughter every time she steps on the court?

  4. ballboy

Couple of points. In answer to your question Beacon has music in and out of timeouts the guy does a real good job, even does dances for the kids throughout the game, and a great job with starting lineups. Poughkeepsie also has music in and out of timeouts, as do a lot of the bigger schools up in Dutchess County, it definately caught on up here. Beacon beat Poughkeepsie last night 65-61 at Beacon. A really fun game to watch, and both teams played extremely hard.

  5. HoopsFan

There haven’t been many good games to watch lately. Despite the score, this game was a lot of fun to watch and the atmospehere in the gym was good. Adams was unstoppable, and the freshman from Scarsdale was great to watch. Keep an eye on her in the future. The game ran incredibly smooth. We’re always bashing the officials in this blog – this time, they deserve a solid “job well done”.

  6. casual fan

Where has the PA guy at Lakeland been? He does a good job with announcing and music at the football, field hockey and lacrosee games. I haven’t heard him at 2 or 3 games I’ve attended.

  7. Josh Thomson

Blue Devils…Only if she’s done something worth mentioning, like with every single story I write.

Ballboy…The Beacon-Ossining-Poughkeepsie league will come right down to the end. Ossining has both next week.

HoopsFan…Good call on the officials. During my postgame talk with Sue Adams, she mentioned how good the officiating was. I agree wholeheartedly. It was such a smooth game with great flow.

casual fan…I believe the guy you’re talking about (he’s around my age and is a teacher at the school) is now the assistant varsity girls basketball coach. That’s why he’s not on the PA. However, I actually haven’t seen a game at Lakeland this season so I don’t know what they’ve done in his stead.

  8. casual fan

    Josh,

not too much, just some kid announce the lineup and he leaves.

  9. Blue Devil

Scoring 12 points and getting 8 rebounds is worth mentioning? If it is than you have missed a lot of stories about kids not named Sprewell or Thomas…

  10. Josh Thomson

Blue Devil…This is beyond sad that you continue to bellyache about me mentioning a girl who had 12 points and eight rebounds. First of all, she has gone from the JV to a starter on the two-time defending Class AA champs, which is something ZERO others can claim.

Secondly, do you know how many of the five all-section players from White Plains AVERAGED equal to or better than 12 points and eight rebounds per game last season??? One, Danica Covington. On a team as balanced and deep as White Plains, these are very, very solid numbers — not to mention the fact I covered the game and saw she made an impact! Did you even see the game?

I swear, I do not understand why some of you people feel the need to be so negative.

  11. Carl

    Josh,

I’m not sure if you realize it or not, but you do seem to focus on White Plains an awful lot. The do have talent but there are many other schools in Section I that are having a great seasons.

There are several teams that are worth taking a look at. I’m surprised to hear you say that you haven’t made it to see a Lakeland game this year. With their record, I thought that it would at least peak your interest.

You seem to favor the larger schools when deciding to write your articles & the smaller schools are left with a box score.
I enjoy reading the responses to the BLOGS & you do a nice job with changing up topics. Keep up the good work!

First off, Adams played amazingly so congrats Kim! she will definitely continue to make an impact on this White Plains team and any team she plays on in the future (UPenn). Secondly, 12 points and 8 rebounds are great stats, especially against great competition. ANyone who gets those numbers deserves a mention and it is definitely not because she is the daughter of an NBA player. It is also disgusting that you (BLue Devil) are trying to take an honor away from a player because of her last name. players get the recognition that they deserve, and Paige definitely deserved that recognition so stop trying to take it away from her. Also it is disgusting that you are so conserned with stats. These are kids and the only stat that matters to them is the one at the end of the game, when they win, so stop acting like personal stats are more important. Paige, Kim, Liz, Angelei and the whole team should be applauded for their victory and their play, regardless of personal stats. If any team were to make it to state finals with 4 players who get 12 points per game, then those players should get a lot more recognition then a player who gets 20 points per game but loses in sectionals. And lastly White Plains earns their press, ocassionally yes, maybe smaller schools are overlooked, but this is an amazingly talented team who by making it to the finals of states two years in a row deserves all the press that they get.

Carl…I said I haven’t atteneded a game AT LAKELAND. Big difference. I’ve seen Lakeland play four different times this season…twice at Mahopac HS, once at Horace Greeley HS, and once at Somers HS. Another reporter of ours also covered them in the Yorktown tournament at Yorktown HS.

Also, our paper has covered several Class B and C teams this season and written about others in our notebooks. That coverage will increase exponentially come playoff time, when their games are even more competitive, as it always does. I think it’s terribly unfair to say “all they get is a box score.”

And, sure, White Plains gets covered the most, but not much more than Scarsdale, Ursuline, Lakeland, Albertus, Pearl River, North Rockland, Haldane and Mount Vernon. If I sent you the breakdown of games we’ve covered of each team, you’d be surprised how even it is. So what’s the main difference??? Every year, White Plains plays the most games because…(drum roll)...it wins them.

  14. Carl

    Josh,

Your first paragraph in your response just proves my point….
You have covered Lakeland 5 times this year and I’m beginning to recognize the names of the White Plains players more than my own children…
Can you say that you have covered the same amount of games with the smaller schools with similar records?

I would love to see a breakdown of regular season games you have covered for this season!

  15. WP Fan

Plenty of small schools get a lot of press. Bronxville girls cross country and track, Keos boys soccer, Dobbs Ferry football, ect. They receive this notoriety because they are very successful. Lakeland is the highest ranked team in the state from section one and are on the verge of an undefeated season, a tremendous accomplishment. This is why you hear about them as much as you do. What other teams in the section this year have a similar record or resume.

  16. Carl

    WP FAN…
I get that WP & Lakeland are successful programs in basketball. Both schools have an abundance of talent. I expect to see both teams deep into the playoffs and possibly the State finals.

Josh made a statement that he covers the smaller schools just as much as the larger. I asked to see what games and or articles he’s written on the smaller schools in relation to the “A & “AA schools for the (06-07) REGULAR season. Most of the smaller schools are once again left on the “Bubble...

  17. Josh Thomson

    Carl…

I checked. The four best teams in League I-A — White Plains, Scarsdale, Ursuline and Mount Vernon — have all been covered 5, 6, or 7 times. By contrast, Haldane, Blind Brook and Dobbs Ferry — the three best small schools — have been covered either 3 or 4 times and two of them have been subjects of my Saturday notebooks. Considering the Class AA teams play much more compelling league games on a regular basis (something no one could argue), I think the coverage had been fairly divided.

Additionally, the only upper-tier teams that haven’t been covered at least 3 or 4 times are Briarcliff and Putnam Valley (tonight’s game) and Irvington, which we are scheduled to cover next week. Outside of Section 1, you could include Our Lady of Victory, Maria Regina and Holy Child, but we’ve made a step or two this week to fix that.

I understand that you’ve grown to learn anything and everything about the White Plains girls — me too — but the reason is the postseason, not the regular season. They win more than everyone else, play longer than everyone else, and thus get their games covered more than anyone else. I promise you that is the main difference. They are very deserving of the attention.

  18. Carl

Thanks for the quick response and clearing that up..

  19. mike

To all those disgruntled with the coverage I cite Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders “JUST WIN BABY!”

[...] Player of the week, Week 10: Kim Adams, White Plains — For the minutes she was on the floor against Scarsdale last week, Adams could practically do no wrong. She had 28 points on 10 of 11 shooting in the Tigers win. The senior guard then continued her torrid play in Thursday’s win over Mamaroneck when she had 21 points and eight assists. [...]
