UPDATED (9:12 P.M.)
We just had a great celebration, as Putnam Valley mobbed the court. Briarcliff just couldn’t score after the first quarter.
OK, back with more later…
UPDATED (8:56 P.M.)
This is such a low scoring game, it’s incredible. And Putnam Valley proceeds to run the shot clock down on every possession. They may as well bust out the four corners.
Anyway, I don’t see how Briarcliff can win, but we’ll see…
UPDATED (8:45 P.M.)
A late run by Putnam Valley has the Tigers ahead of Briarcliff after three quarters. Angela Pescetti is doing an excellent job defensively on Christine Kemp at the moment but other players have emerged for Put Valley. Katie Geyer, who didn’t play until teammate Jylan Mayo went out with three fouls, has now scored two big baskets.
I was just reminded by the Scarsdale girls that I picked Briarcliff to win. Perhaps me being wrong will bode well for them later in the week vs. White Plains…
OK, I’ll be back with a final…
UPDATED (8:22 P.M.)
It’s halftime and it’s tied. No surprise there. Both teams have their own advantages, Briarcliff inside (Shelby Coon has eight points and five boards; Jamie Heyda active, getting her hand on rebounds and passes), and Putnam Valley with its shooting (4 of 7 on 3’s). Christine Kemp has been the leading scorer so far with 10 points. She also has two assists.
Expect this one to be decided late. At this stage, I can’t really say either team has an edge.
***********************************
The first quarter just ended at the Class B semi between No. 1 Briarcliff and No. 5 Putnam Valley and the Bears are up 11-10.
Both teams came out with an incredible amount of energy, but Putnam Valley went on a scoreless 4:12 to end the quarter.
More later…

The Putnam Valley Briarcliff game was a low scoring game & a very, very sloppy game. I was not very inpressed at all with both teams sloppy play. These teams are seeded #1 & #5 and that’s real weak for the #1 & #5 seed’s.
Maybe the Dobbs ferry Haldane game can make up for the poorly played P.V. Briar’s game. I hope.
2007-YEAR OF THE UPSETS…
Watch out Haldane, and WP….remember YEAR OF THE UPSETS!
putnam fans mobbed the court?
Your coverage is amazing Josh, great job in Monday’s paper. What a great week, I will look for you at the CC.
Was the dad who threatened the Kempster at the game? Hows that Dad feeling right about now????
LOSER!
C Kemp, WNBA future all star. You go girl. PV over AM in the finals
ok i hate to say i told you so but…
putnam valley’s defensive strategy was to allow their center to play coon one on one defensively and not double off of any of the shooters. coon scored some points but couldnt do enough to carry her team. the one time put valley doubled down, coon kicked it out to taylor pescheti in the corner for three, which she made, but was negated by a 3 second call. i agree with coach thompson’s strategy and it was what won the game..you cannot allow those guards to burn you from downtown. by the way, having a healthy kastuk made a big big difference.
Josh, i think you are very on target with your comment regarding the scarsdale girls basketball team… and to all those drinking the hatorade against josh, he writes about the same four teams all the time because they rock. if any other star from any other league played in the league AA and with teams like scarsdale, white plains, mount vernon or ursuline, they would not survive. so, pass the hatorade and move on. ite, see ya tmrw josh.
BCLIFF BALL,
the fans didn’t mob the court, the team did.
Putnam Valley played all around ok d….but the real problem for Briarcliff was that they couldnt hit a shot! they had some great looks, but they just werent falling, I guess it wasnt their night. And they actually doubled down the post once Coon got the ball alot, weather it was Kemp or Scott, but Coon played VERy well. She attacked the rim and while all of her shots didnt fall had some great rebounds and faught hard along with terrific defense. She got MAyo into foul trouble, but it was terrible that especailly once Mayo was out of the game that the guards from Briarcliff didnt look inside. Coon couldve taken over that game had they looked inside more when there was such a mis-match, but they didnt. Briarcliffs guards just never got into any type of flow. Ange did play solid d on Kemp, but once again it was the lack of offense from most players (guards, Coon played a very solid game at both ends and heyda wasnt to bad either) that really killed Briarcliff. Not having too much movement, and not being able to hit shots is really what killed them. As a Briarcliff fan I have to say Congrats to PV. It was a good game. And Briarcliff is still young, they return everyone except for Ange, so look out for them, they are taking over next year!
John…I didn’t want to say I told you so…I decided to cut & paste my earlier prediction.
You say in the first match-up between PV & BRIARCLIFF that Briarcliff didn’t play well. That was when Putnam Valley was at full strength with KASTUK.
Putnam Valley ultimately won that game(62-48)
In the second match-up on 2/2/2007 between PV & BRIARCLIFF is when PV wasn’t at full strength & without KASTUK.
Briarcliff ultimately won that game (59-45)
With Putnam Valley at full strength you have to say that KASTUK is a significant factor.
As for Briarcliff and the underneath game of COON….
The last 4 games of the season, COON only got into double digits in scoring once. It was against PLEASANTVILLE 16 points & her last game HASTINGS 2/21/2007 she had a season low of 2 points.
You can’t argue against her rebounding ability. COON can obviously crash the boards grabbing 275 rebounds thus far matching SHIELDS from HALDANE.
The County Center has always given outside shooters a problem. So, if you are relying on three point shooting to save you when the inside game is shut down, think again
Where was the BRIARCLIFF ‘S most dominant post player & their outside shooting guards? I was not impressed with the play of Briarcliff at all. I have to say that makes me question the rest of the competition in class “B.
Congrats to Putnam Valley!
Playoffs you are a fool didn’t Shelby score in double figures and have a double double in the county center tonight. What is your problem?
Congrats to PV on their win Unfortunately it was marred by Ms Kemp flipping the bird to the Bcliff fans, unnecessary and shows a lack of class.
MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU GO MOUTHING OFF. SHE DIDN’T FLIP THE FANS THE BIRD AS YOU PUT IT BUT MERELY POINTED TO THE STANDS WHERE THE FANS WERE YELLING AIR BALL FROM THE PREVIOUS POSSESSION. IT WAS JUST GOOD NATURED GIVE AND TAKE.AS FAR AS CLASS GOES, YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MY DAUGHTER. SHE HAS MORE CLASS IN HER PINKY THAN YOU HAVE IN YOUR WHOLE BODY.MAYBE YOU SHOULD ASK SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HER BECAUSE YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T.I BELEIVE YOU ARE THE SAME ONE THAT HAD A BUNCH OF STUPID REMARKS AFTER THE LAST BRIARCLIFF GAME. MY DAUGHTER WAS TAUGHT JUST LIKE ME THAT IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY ABOUT SOMEONE THEN DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. IT SOUNDS LIKE A CASE OF SOUR GRAPES AS YOU SO PUT IT THE LAST TIME WE PLAYED.ONCE AGAIN MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHANNEL YOUR ENERGY INTO ROOTING FOR YOUR TEAM INSTEAD OF RIPPING THE OTHER TEAM. CONGRATS TO THE BRIARCLIFF GIRLS AND THEIR COACH ON A GREAT SEASON. THEY ARE A CLASS ACT.
perhaps a long look in the mirror would solve your problem
Why didn’t Shelby Coon line up and shake hands with the rest of her teammates when the game was over?
As a parent perhaps Mr. Kemp could advocate for his daughter better than anyone. I have watched Christine play for years throughout CYO, AAU etc. and other sports, not only is she a terric athlete but she is one of the most respectful, considerate kids you’ll meet. Her sportsmanship is amazing, she cares about her teammates and competition. Your misrepresentation of the incident is ridiculous. Anyone that knows this girl would agree. The girls from both teams should be proud of themselves when they look in the mirror. When you look in what do you see?
After watching Miss Kemp display extreme unsportsmanlike conduct by giving the upper deck of Briarcliff fans the finger after putting up a 3-pointer, I have a very hard time believing that she felt “threatened” by the comments of a fan at the PV-BM game in Briarcliff and needed to get her father involved.
End the nonsense, kemp played a great game and she POINTED at the briarcliff fans, as part of a give and take, nothing wrong with that, PV showed that when at full strength they’re the better team, and this is coming from someone who isnt a fan of either team. Briarcliff had a great year, they deserved their number one ranking, so congratulations on a great year as well.
Do you Briarcliff fans realize how ridiculous you sound? So its ok for your fans to yell at players on the court but when they respond on the court and give it back to the fans you’re going to whine about it?
PV played a great game and Briarcliff played poorly and lost – deal with it.
Mike,
All week you guys were talking up the fact that your post player was so dominant and Hastings couldn’t handle the outside shooting guards of Briarcliff.
As I have stated earlier, Coon is a great rebounder, but she was anything but dominant in the post offensively (scoring) at the County Center.
That was an average performance scoring 12 points, against a much smaller Putnam Valley Team.
As far as KEMP goes, she is a hard nosed player, and isn’t afraid to take on any challenge. If it happends to be the Briarcliff’s student section or going one on one down the lane, she has skills and was able to back it up against Briarcliff..
Putnam County takes down Westchester County!
I thought both teams played their hearts out. I thought the taunting of Kemp by the Briarcliff fans was a bit much but a typical part of any tough game. I have watched this girl play for many years and I can say that I know in my heart that she would NEVER show such disrespect and poor sportsmanship as to have “flipped off” anyone! She is one of the classiest and toughest competitors I have ever met. I saw what she did and she POINTED to the stands to let them know they weren’t going to negatively affect her game (and obviously they didn’t). Don’t you people have anything better to do than to rip apart such a wonderful young lady.
First off, I was at the game and it appeared that kemp did flip the bird, however, even if she didnt, she should watch out for her actions because from a spectators seat a point can look like the middle finger, so she should just be careful for her own sake. Although it may not have been the middle finger as it appeared to be, a great player doesnt let the crowd get to her or make any jesture at them at all. Secondly, you all need to back off of Coon. For starters this is her third year playing basketball at all, so to get to where she is, is more improvement then most kids see in a lifetime of playing the sport, so you all need to lay off. Where she is right now, is a better place then most players will ever get. You all need to realize though that a great, dominant post player does a lot more then just scoring. It is the little things that make a player great, which are too often overlooked, especially around here. She, along with any great player, makes her team better, sets good screens, good passes, gets rebounds, and leads her team as well as makes themselves an offensive threat (which she clearly has). She averages a double double, which for anyone is great stats. And last night, she had a double double (and fyi Mayo is her size so to say an undersized pv team is way off), but her whole team was out of it, so what do you want her to do? get the rebound, post up and feed herself the ball? I think not. The team was off, but Shelby was in control last night. She proved to be the best on Briarcliff by far last night, and the top 2 players on the floor. Offense means nothing if you dont play great d, box out, crash the boards and help your team, which she does so lay off. Why do you feel it so necessary to complettely bash Coon on offense every time you post on this blog? She is a dominant overall player, a very good offensive player, and is turning into a dominant one. At the rate which she is going, to only be playing 3 years and be at this point, by next year, she will dominate against everyone, in all apects of the game (and if you think anyone around here, or even that she dominates just wait for her next year). i herd that she is now playing on one of the best aau teams in the nation so you can count on her being a complete dominant force next year (if you dont think she already is), and to go on to do great things in college. As for Kemp, she is a good little ball player, and can really run the show, and I wish pv the best of luck. Briarcliff had a bad night, Coon did her job and got Mayo out of the game in the 4th, but the guards never looked to Coon! what can you do? this stone cold game just came at a really bad time for the bears, however they did fight hard, but pv just hit more shots then briarcliff. best of luck to pv though!
A true sportsmanship player says things like this:
“If we played 10 times, we’d win five and they’d win five. It depends on who’s night it was. I guess tonight was our night.-Kemp
Kemp did not “flip the bird”, she pointed to the crowd. It was justified, the crowd was taunting her a bit too much.
She just shouldnt have let the crowd get to her at all. The best players will get the most “taunting” from the opposing crowd, and will have the most critics, its something that comes with talent. And yes, that was great quote and I never doubted that at heart she had great shoprtsmanship, but I really meant she shouldnt let crowds get to her, it will just hinder what she can do. Also, just watch out, because the best players are always under microscopes so if she didnt point (not that it was wrong but still), then none of this wouldve been brought up. Thats all, it wasnt meant as something against her, just for her to be careful. But once again best of luck to her and her team!
Mark,
I first want to say that no one is here to bash COON, but when people like you get on here and start making outlandish statements and promoting players, you are going to get a response back, some positive & some negative..
You are the one self promoting stating: “COON IS A DOMINANT PLAYER & BY NEXT YEAR SHE WILL BE DOMINATING AGAINST EVERYONE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME. Those are your words not mine…
Do you know how much of an ass you sound like? Not everyone feels that same way!
How can you say that COON was in total control last night?
COON was 5-16 from the field… At best, that is an average night. If you think that 5-16 was dominant then you need to raise your standards.
You blame the guards for not getting COON the ball, but somehow COON shot the ball “16 times.
Look at the game stats: BRIARCLIFF shot 19% from the field!
BRIARCLIFF and COON had a great season.
All I know is that Teeney’s mom is hot.
Is Kemp the same girl who had to get her father involved when she was taunted at Briarcliff? Get real
Come on it is the sectional semi-finals your team is the underdog. Comming off a 14 point loss to Briarcliff the last meeting which ended on a poor note. Kemp who hadn’t played that well the las time these 2 teams sqaured off was out to prove something. Emotion, pride, spirit is what leaders play for, also known as the captain. Adrenaline is what was pushing these players during the game. She simply pointed to the crowd and it was not “The Bird”. For those who were offended, sorry for being uptight I guess her emotions got the best of her.
Go Tigers!!!
well everyone is saying that the Briarcliff fans were bad…how about the PV fans. I mean yeah they were very loud and i’ll admit they did out due us =x but what about when the PV fans began chanting STEROIDS…STEROIDS…STERIODS…everytime that COON touched the ball.I know shes bigger than their center but thats uncalled for. by the way im a football player for DA BEARS. but the “just liek football” chant was pretty good…
to justify things, i was a neutral spectator, just going to the county center to see some basketball games, and I saw what happened with Kemp and she absolutely did NOT give the crowd the middle finger, “flip the bird,” or any other term you may have for it. My philosophy is that if a crowd is riding a player, IGNORE THEM, but Kemp was obviously in the moment. I thought the game was not an interesting one, besides for the fact that a #5 seed beat the #1 seed. Props to both teams, and good luck to PV in the finals!
LISTEN UP….
for one, KEmp and PV needs to get over themselves. EVERYONE will get yelled harsh remarks at one point in the game GET OVER IT. I play a division one sport and people yell stuff at me and my team all the time. If kemp cant keep her cool and deal with it herself instead of getting her father involved in a fight then she needs to quit basketball because its not going to end. If you need your father to fight your battles youll never go anywhere. It was classless also to flip the bird at anyone…Kemp may be great in the little New york Bubble we call “section B” but outside of it, people will laugh in her face. There is nothing there to have an ego about, yes shes a good player but why be unsportsmanlike if it just makes you look worse?
The PV Fans yelled steriods at Coon and did she do anything? NOPE. Coon is a calm and classy player and I did not see her father pick a fight with any PV fans. “Steroids”...are you jealous that she outsizes you. Coons still growing and like everyone said has only been playing for three years. She is playing for one of the best AAU teams in the nation and has already got many college looks. Just because shes big doesnt mean she takes steroids, If shes great at what she does let her size be to her advantage and stop being so jealous. She had a double double many games this season, i dont think anyone is a versatile a player as she is as she can both shoot and use her size to rebound very well.
Any athlete can see talent and both briarcliff and putman valley showed talent and athletic ability on tuesday night. SO how about everyone who doesnt have a life and posts on this blog to make coon feel like shit, go find yourself a life. I gauruntee most of you are wash up parents who are just out to bash other kids because you dont think yours are good enough. Well GUESS WHAT you look like an idiot and your remarks about Coon and the bears are only going to drive them to work harder, get bigger and kick ass next year.
WEll played game by all….look forward to seeing the youngbears suceed in the future!:)
I agree completly with LaShwanda. Coon and the bears are sick and should have dominated the game. UNLUCKY. Kemp’s a good player but her actions off of the court are absolutly unheard of and like Lshwanda said she wont get anywhere especially not with her attitude.
And as for Coon and steroids. Put Valley might be mad that she outsized some but I have seen MUCH larger girls than her who do not take steroids. Coons great at what she does and if her size helps then back the hell off and stop being jealous.
COONS HOTT…SHELBY I LOVE YOU
Marry me?
LaShwanda,
What AAU team is Coon Playing for this year? It’s been said several times in this BLOG.
Who ever “MARK” is in this BLOG was trying to self promote COON and he certainly got a reaction.
I would suggest letting her STATS speak for her, instead of “MARK” trying to sell something to the rest of us.
She is playing for the New York Gazelles straight out of NYC. Tina Charles played on this AAU team b4 going to Uconn this year, and so did Melanie Murphy before going on to play at Stanford. She plays for coach Cecil King. Also, I dont think Mark was trying to self-promote Coon, but things were said in defense of her being attacked on this blog. Bottom line, she is a terrific all-around player, and may not have had all high scoring games, but always shows up and is tough to handle. She is a constant team player, is always in it to win it, and gives it her all. Off nights always happen, but just like anyone in high school she is still developing so everyone needs to lay off. People really need to lay off trying to criticize these young players on this blog. And also, stats arent everything. A players heart and determination makes her great, along with stats. Also, to judge Coon, or really any player from Briarcliff on season stats is wrong being that they had over 7 blowout games in which starters played about 10-15 min in each game. Also, stats clearly arent everything since she is being recruited by Division 1, 2 and 3 programs and doesnt average 40 points a game like you all appear think a “great” player should so I think all of you who think stats are everything need to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about ( a college coach, or really any coach or top player in general). Shelby has soo much potential, can’t wait to see what she does next year and in college, especially as Mark said, since shes only been playing for 3 years! Best of luck to her, she is one of the most promising players around!
Aright LASHWANDA chill out you have the most posts on this blog.. There all-american bball player
Lashwanda & Mark
Some people like “MARK are trying to self promote COON, and not everyone agrees with it…One minute MARK says she is so dominant and next year she will dominate in every aspect of the game, and then you say but she only has been playing three years…. Does she deserve a handicap for that?
“MARKâ€? then decided to blame the Briarcliff guards for not getting her the ball… Coon shot 5-16…. What is that all about?
Big time players “Dominant Players come up big in the playoffs and it just didn’t happen at the County Center.
This year COON isn’t one of the top 10 players in Section One! Next year we will have to see…
I would say that she has potential and a promising future ahead of her. Playing AAU is a step in the right direction and she will get better from participating in the AAU program.
Remember COON isn’t the only junior playing AAU this summer. So, if MARK or anyone else thinks that she will be able to “Dominate all aspects of the game, she is going to have to prove it. Most importantly, she needs to show it in the play offs.
COON is a good ball player and still developing her skills. Lets leave it at that!
Didnt say she was top 10 in section…there are simply too many very good seniors ( Kim Adams, Liz Flooks, Jackie Alemany….etc) however, TO say that she didnt show or prove dominance on the glass in playoffs and pretty solid offensive performace in playoffs is rediculous. If a double double isnt atleast a solid performance in playoffs, and isnt showing up in playoffs, then i dont know what is. And the fact that you keep bringing up 5-16 (which was more like 5-12) is pretty rediculous. Having an off shooting night is not having a bad all around game. As I said before, all of you focus way to much on stats instead of the skill and all around play of a player. ( a great example= Agguire @ WP who doesnt score a lot but is one of the best guards around)And yes, I do believe that Coon will dominate next year, and in all aspects means passing, shooting, rebounding…all skills, not always against EVERYONE. And, I never said she was the only junior playing aau, you read way too far into stuff. All i was saying is that she is playing on a top team in the county which will only make her that much better. And, since in the past three years she has improved so much while not being on such a great team, then she will most likely come back having improved more then she has in any past year. An no one is self-promoting Coon, we have no reason to, but when people like you come on here and try to rip her up, you to are going to get feedback. Also, saying that she is very dominnat on the boards and fairly dominant (still developing but promising) offensively but has only been playing for three years is not a contradictory statement as you try to make it out to be. Thats saying she has gotten so far in such little time which makes her so promising for the future. And yes, we will have to wait and see but the fact that you feel it necessary to completely bash the play of a teenager is repulsive and you should be ashamed of yourself. Obviously you are some parent who is just upset and has some kind of problem with just adamitting that there are other very good players out there. Get over yourself, and let it be. This was a great season for Coon and the bears, and both her and her team have very promising futures so lets leave it at that and see what happens next year. Also, all of this stuff that you say, doubting Coon for just a second even, Im sure is fueling her up to get that much better, so dont expect anything less then the best next year.
Alright folks, I think that’s plenty on this topic. Let’s not debate the merits of one or two players  both of which happen to be very, very, very good  and really bring this blog into the toilet. It’s not necessary by any means.
Lashwanda..
I agree with “Play Offs” on this one!
I don’t see where “Play Offs” was bashing. I do see where “Play Offsâ€? was replying to what MARK and others had said in previous postings on this blog.
Saying that COON has potential and a promising future ahead of her isn’t bashing..
Measuring someone’s true potential is difficult to do, that is why coaches and recruiters ask for a players stats when making an offer..
The word “Dominant” was used way too often in this blog!
LaShwanda…or should i say Shelby Coon…get over yourself
Did anyone see that big sexy banana?
