Falcons cruise into another championship game

February
28

The Bulldogs weren’t bad in the second half, but this was long over by that time, as the Falcons led 16-2 after one and 26-7 at the half and never looked back.

My colleague Jake, who is covering the game tonight, told me before that all five Albertus Magnus starters scored in the first quarter. That was anything but a surprise. All five players are so solid, so fundamentally sound, and I think it’ll take some tremendous effort on Saturday for Putnam Valley to win.

No disrespect to the Tigers, but Magnus has been on a different plane all season from the rest of Class B. You saw it here tonight.

Jen Canale, the Falcons leading scorer, led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds and DeSheha Waring had 11.

Tara Gabelman had seven points and seven rebounds to lead Irvington.

If you’re the Bulldogs, and their coach Gina Maher, who was coaching her first game here in 30 seasons at Irvington, you have to look toward the future here. They have six freshmen and an eighth grader so, hey, someday they may be the experienced team impressing everyone. They just weren’t ready tonight.

  1. dazed and confused

I don’t quite understand what Irvington was thinking-did they wan’t to lose the game or what. Enough already about the freshmen on this team why the heck were the two leading scorers and rebounders for Irvington sitting on the bench so much. If they wanted to have a fighting chance these two girls should never have been on the bench. It is such a shame that their first trip to the County Center was such a disaster because of poor coaching decisions. Shame on you Irvington you let your school down

    Quick question:
Weren’t the 2 “leading scorers and rebounders” on the floor for the first six and a half minutes when the score was 15-0?
At least the freshmen have an excuse, they are freshmen.

  3. Basketball

eh not so much because one of these freshmen were on the floor and the first six minutes and the 1st quarter was a team effort with they all contributed to. That team wouldn’t have ever gotten to county center without the upperclassmen. Also I see “leading scores and rebounders” is in quotes but you cant really argue with the stats, there is no need to denounce what those girls have done this season. Basically sitting those girls in my opinion was a bad decision, and was very unfair considering they put up big numbers all year.

people, it wouldnt have mattered who was on the floor for irvington. albertus is wayyy to good for them…irvington never had a chance in this one. albertus was scary good last night

  5. Shame on you

    Basketball,
Would you like some cheese to go with that whine? You sound like a disgruntled player or the parent of one.

This format is perfect because it allows everyone to write in and give their opinion. I’m sure that you are stirring the pot.

You should also remember that you wouldn’t have gotten to the county center without the freshman either. The very best upperclassmen are the players who embrace and encourage their younger teammates. At most high schools (the better ones anyway) being an upperclassman does not mean anything when it comes to playing time. Playing time is earned.

I agree that the coach could have done some things to up-tempo the game a little so that the team would have some more opportunities. The team looks like they might have some speed.

If you are talking about the same two girls that I am then you didn’t see the same game I did. They obviously didn’t play any offence because the team didn’t score, they didn’t rebound because 8 of Magnus’ first 15 points were put-backs and they looked like doormen opening the door to allow their players to drive past them to the basket for lay-ups. So what exactly is it that would tell the coach to play them more?

I thought #14 was the only player who made anything happen out there, and I think she must be the freshman you are referring to.

Ok first and formost Irvington upset Pleasantville to get to county center. Second they never have played there before. Third they are very young and came out that way. I think the point guard and guards they have are going to be very good but they are young give them time. Fourth lets congratulate them for getting there and having that experience applaud them. Dont blame the coach she is one of the most classiest coaches around. And give credit to Magnus they are a great team they have been at county center numerous times. Stop bashing the coach!

  7. Shame on you

    well said bballfan.

A good year for Irvington and a very good Magnus team

  8. Hoops

I am really upset how Irvington parents or players are taking this loss. 1st coach Maher did what any other coach would have done,if you miss lay-up after lay-up and turn the ball over and jog back on defense and keep helping up on defense and allowing back door scores after back door scores what would you do. Im suprised she left them in as long as she did in the 1st quarter. If you are having a bad day then there is nothing you can do but suck it up and take it on the chin. And 2nd I thought this was a team game not a me game, thats another reason Irvington played so bad because they did not play that way, only the younger players on the team did thats why they finished strongerfrom what I see. It is a real shame and I think who ever is writing this stuff should be ashamed. 1st the Nedwick kid now the young girl players on the varsity. It is turning into a bad sports town fast.COACH you did the right move. GOOD JOB

Guess what people, this is completely ridiculous. Albertus Magnus played amazing basketball, and has an experienced team. This is what happened in the game, period.

I’ve made this point before on here: Sometimes teams win and sometimes they lose. When they lose, it isn’t necessarily anyone’s fault. Albertus Magnus WON its game. Mount Vernon WON its game. There is no great science as to why it happened other than that. Sports are not always that complicated.

To Josh Thomson – you said it all – people should read your remarks and take heed.
