I’ll have more on this game in tonight’s update because I have to get out of my seat here at the County Center. I didn’t see too much of this game because I was writing my Mount Vernon-Ursuline story, but both teams had their good and bad moments. Pearl River won it 50-43 and will play either Lakeland or Ardsley on Sunday for the championship.
Kaitlyn O’Keefe had 25 points to lead the Pirates, who lost an early lead and then had a fight off the Bulldogs the whole way through.
I’ll admit to the Beacon fans that I should’ve given their team more credit. The Bulldogs were right there with Pearl River, and that’s something none of the other Class A teasm can say.
OK, I’ll have more to say tonight, plus a star of the day…

The Pirates were up 17-9 after the first quarter but Beacon rallied to tie it at 19. Kaitlyn O’Keefe than responded with a 3-point play the old way, and Pearl River is on top. I’ll be back with more updates, but this could be closer than expected.

After watching tonight’s game, Lakeland is my pick to win it all. Lakeland just has too many weapons and they have a slight height advantage. Lakeland’s gonna be hard to stop in the paint.
I agree, Pearl River did not impress me much. I think Beacon could beat Pearl River in a rematch…maybe this time, they’ll hit some shots from the outside.
Poco, Juice…I see what you’re saying, but this was just one game. Pearl River can play much, much better. The Pirates actually shot worse from the field (31%) than Beacon (34%).
Congratulations to Mt. Vernon – great game, easy win!
I agree that Pearl River can play better, but just saying that is taking away from the brilliant game plan that the Beacon coaches had, and the fact that the girls did a great job carrying it out. A Pearl River player even commented about how great Beacon’s defense was, in the article in your paper. Beacon played the game exactly where they wanted to play the game a low scoring game, and shut down Pearl River’s vaunted fast break. Beacon was 13-1 this year when they played games in the 50’s or lower in terms of points and 1-3 in games where the score got into the 60’s. Pearl River was 9-1 in games that got into the 60’s in terms of points. Beacon absolutely controlled the tempo of the game just had a rough night shooting. Beacon shoots around 30% from 3 point range as a team for the season and shot 1-14 last night that was the difference in the game. One final note Beacon allowed teams to shoot an average of 33% from the field for the season so 31% is nothing unusual from them. Good luck to Pearl River they played well enough to win down the stretch, but will someone finally give Beacon a little credit. And I think Ardsley and Pearl River got some real good info on what is needed to stop Pearl River
ballboy…You’re great. You’ve been one of our best contributors all season. But I did say both in this post and another one that you guys were right, Beacon was better than I thought. I feel like I explained the Pearl River side, but also gave Beacon its due as well.
Yeah, what ballboy said. By the way, did I mention Beacon brings back 4 starters next year and a much deeper bench? They are only graduating one player that played, #15 Sondris Miranda who was on the court for her defensive and rebounding efforts.
I guess the future looks bright for Beacon. I just don’t see Pearl River stopping Fazio and Voelkel down low. I feel Pearl River struggled with the 5’9 Beacon girl, I believe it was #15 mentioned above. She did well rebounding for Beacon. Lakeland goes 5’10 and above in the post which is gonna give Pearl River fits. Once the defense starts to collapse down low Lakeland is going to make them pay by lighting it up from the outside.
Poco the 5ft 9in. Beacon girl was actually number 3 Tancredi seen her play and score 25ish against john Jay at Marist Red fox shootout. She is only in the 10th grade. Team probably should have given her the ball more team may have not lost to Pearl River this time around.
