It certainly wasn’t easy, but Lakeland won its first championship since 1989 by beating Pearl River 49-41.
The Hornets committed 27 turnovers under great pressure from the Pirates but were able to survive. Great fourth quarter by Amy Voelkel, who led Lakeland to the championship by hitting two big baskets in the fourth quarter.

Amy Voelkel, who made a hoop to put Lakeland ahead by three, just made both ends of a one and one.

Sarah Benischek just hit a 3 from the top of the key to put her team up seven. It was a huge shot, and has put the Pirates on their heels.
Sorry I’m not updating enough Andy.

Well, Lakeland won’t go down without a basket. Sarah Benischek just scored to put them ahead four.
Ironically, the score was 35-33 after three, the same score as last year vs. Lourdes when the Hornets were outscored 20-0 in the fourth

A very balanced effort for Lakeland, which has started to handle the pressure a little bit better. Kelly Schneider just hit a jumper at the buzzer. The Hornets have shot 12 of 17 from the free throw line.
Kaitlyn O’Keefe had 11 points to lead the way for Pearl River.

Tori Jarosz has come off the bench to play well, scoring four quick points and Sarah Benischek just hit a 3. Kaitlyn O’Keefe has seven points for the Pirates.
Lakeland is having trouble with Pearl River’s press. The Hornets already have six turnovers.

Can the updates happen sooner
Pearl river was the better team, better defense, big scorers shot poorly
Pearl River was not the better team last night. If they were the better team and played better defense they would have won the game. However, it was smart of the Pearl River coach to press Lakeland. I don’t think they’re used to being pressed and it was obvious. They couldn’t handle the press for anything. They tried to break the press by passing over the defense and Pearl River was constantly deflecting passes which lead to turnovers. It seemed that none of the Lakeland guards were confident or comfortable dribbling the ball up court and trying to break the press themselves. Lakeland better come up with a new press breaker or try to figure out what they were doing wrong because surely Cornwall will press them after last nights game. Twenty something turnovers is not going to win you a state championship.
