Girls basketball in the Lower Hudson Valley

ESG scholastic team announced

May
10

Tryouts for the Hudson Valley Empire State Games’ team were completed last night and I, serving in the role of your loyal blogger, have the players who were picked.

Here goes (years are all for ‘07-08 season)…

Guards:
Brittany Shields, Sr., Haldane
Alaina Walker, Jr., North Rockland
Porsha Postell, Jr., Woodlands
Meghan Murphy, Sr., Carmel
Caitlynn Moran, Jr., John Jay-East Fishkill
Shannon Ray, So., Ursuline
Allyson Biordi, Sr., Beacon

Forwards:
Mary Abrams, Sr., North Rockalnd
Sophia Aleksandravicius, Jr., Holy Child
Maggie Blair, Jr., Braircliff
Gillian Felix, Jr., Mahopac
Emily Stallings, Sr., Burke Catholic
Shanekwa Kellman, Sr., North Rockland

Coaches:
Dan Ricci, Ossining
John Reilly, Lady Knicks AAU

Now, only 10 of these players will make the actual team, while the other three will be considered alternates. Those choices have not yet been made.

This is a big summer for the Games considering they are being held so close to home. The Hudson Valley team almost always provides an indication as to who are the best players in the area.

Just so you know, all games will be held at Westcheter Community College in Valhalla.

Were are the Mount Vernon, White Plains and Ursuline players. They didn’t make this team.

  2. Josh Thomson

fan…I asked about Duncan and Mercer and was told they didn’t try out. Aguirre normally goes to Texas in the offseason so I assume she didn’t try out either. I can’t speak for the Ursuline girls. I don’t know who tried out and who didn’t. Sorry.

  3. baller

not a very strong team but we will just have to see how they do! I dont think a lot of the wp, ursuline or real top-notch (not that there r not ne here but the other ones) tried out bc of the time that it takes with practice and everything and their travel schedules!

  4. ballin

what aau teams r coon and aguirre playing for??

  5. Lou Kern

None of the Ursuline players except for Shannon Ray tried out.

  6. fan

I asked around and found out that Aguirre is playing with the Westchester Hawks 16u Elite Team. That team is loaded, they have Duncan and Mercer from M.V. They also have Crean, Liller, Thomas and Palmer from Ursuline. And Jackson and Graves from Horace Greeley. Aguirre and Palmer is in the backcourt with Duncan, Mercer and Thomas rounding out the starting Five. I’m hearing that they really look good. Now they should be on the Empire State Team.

  7. hoopz fan

I thought Aguirre and Thomas played Gauchos!? maybe they play both? and yeah where is Coon playing?

  8. Coach Dan Ricci

Hey fan read the previos post! They did not try out, so how can they be on the team!

We are very happy with the girls we do have. They are working very hard and they will do a great job representing the Hudson Valley Region.

p.s. – Once again don’t hide behind fake screen names if you are going to come on here and bash hs girls sign your name to it.

  9. fan

No one is saying anything negative about the girls, only thing I’m saying is they should have try out. Don’t get upset for no reason.

  10. Spectator at Regionals

I saw the Hawks team play at the Regionals on L.I. two weekends ago. They did not look good. I would take this Empire squad over them any day. The Empire squad is deeper and more team-oriented. If I was Coach Ricci, I’d try to set up a scrimmage, since it would be a great matchup for both squads.

  11. fan

Hey spectator you got me their, I’ve never seen them play so you might be right.

  12. Hoops Brother

fan first of all it is spelled where. Now the only thing the MV, WP and Ursuline kids had going against them was that they didn’t show up. It kind of hurt their chances as I hear that’s a prerequisite for making the team.

  13. Hoops Brother

Not here to bash girls but that Hawks team would lose by 30 points if they played Coach Reilly’s Lady Knicks team with Walker, Postell, Blair, Dweck, Alexandravicus, Seferra etc.

  14. fan

I’m glad I don’t have a daughter that is on any of these teams or is good enough to be on these teams. I understand you have to try out I just wish they did. I think Aguirre and Duncan are two of the best in westchester. Now you guys making statement about this team beating this by 30 points isn’t necessary. Or I would take this team over that team is not right. So I have said my last words on this subject.

P.S. Yes I know its where, but thanks anyway for bringing it to my attention.

  15. Coach John Reilly

Please everyone just take a step back and realize whom we are talking about. We are talking about fine young student athletes who are trying to make basketball a means to open other doors. As Josh will attest I am always on this web site to see what is going on, but never do I blog. I try to stay neutral because of my involvement with some of the High Schools and there coaches, my AAU affiliation, the Empire State Team and the Metro Classic Team. All I ask is that you are respectful to all the fine girl basketball players in the Hudson Valley Region whether they are on the ESG team, local aau teams or taking the summer off for others reasons. Once again I THANK YOU and just remember whom we are talking about.

  16. baller

Mercer and Aguirre’s team would kill the lady knicks team w postell and walker simply because of experience, maturity, and talent. Hawks team goes deeper then knicks. The only two from the knicks who would be able to compete with older hawks players are postell and walker. That was a silly comparison. If Aguirre, mercer, coon, and crean tried out for the empries team they would be killer, but none of them went (I believe due to conflicts w aau and the actual games) They are just hurting this empires team by not comming but traveling and the exposure is probably more important (not implying empires are bad just that aau nationals and such are better exposure and wider comp). I wish all of these players the best of luck weather it is on aau teams or empires or metro classic or w/e

  17. Hoops Brother

baller you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, I suggest you watch some more basketball before making such pronouncements. The Hawks team is more mature because they are a year older? Only Walker and Postell could play with that Hawks team? You are delirious and need to get a clue, best of luck. You show how clueless you are with the statement about exposure because every coach in the tri-state area will be at Empires. And who brought Coon into the discussion? She would have had a very hard time making the Empire team. Nice player but not at that level.

  18. baller

I hear Coon is playing on an elite team from nyc, so yes she would have made the team and was asked to play multiple times as i hear. The Empires is not some elite level team. and she woud have made it with ase. Also, by saying she would not make it would make her worse then Blair and through the season has shown that she is much better then Blair so nice try.I brought her up because she was brought up b4 about asking where she played.Secondly, I was not trying to degrade the other members of the knicks team but to say tha the 15s lady knicks team could beat the hawks by 30 is absurd. Aguirre is probably the best point guard around and the hawks are a dep, big, strong team. The Knicks team is not bad but not at the hawks level. who else do you think could really play with the hawks from that team? This is a stupid conversation though because they dont have to lay each other, it is not like high school, and these teams are for these kids to get better and to expand as players so let them do that. Thanks

  19. dan

you all really need to chill out with this blogging. These girls are the most talented players in teh area ( the ones on the empires team and those girls brought up i.e. Coon, aguirre, Thomas, Liller…etc) RELAX. They are not playing for a gold ball and these teams dont need to play each other so everybody calm down. Wherever these girls r playing it is to have fun and get better stop this it is rediculous! Let them get better and have fun, all this criticism can come again in the winter when we can see what kinds of strides these players have made. They are all playing on good aau teams, and good job to those top players who tried out and made the empires team, and to those players who didnt but shouldve, Im sure they had a good reason and good look to them in whatever other basketball tournaments they play in this summer. You all need to relax on the bashing kids and teams, LET THEM PLAY FOR ONCE! With the exception of the coaches hwo have posted the rest of you all obviously have nothing better to do with your time and no prior basketball knowledge so lay off these are teenage girls!! I cant believe this nonsense is still going on and its almost summer time,,,,stop!! these are elite players in the area so let them go out and get even better and quit bashing them because maybe your daughter was beat by them or you just dont like them, whatever reason it is. THese are all good nice kids, and very talented players so lay off. Good luck to all of you girls and Im sorry if you read this, dont listen to it, keep going out and having fun! good luck

  20. Hoops Brother

Coach Ricci and Coach Reilly didn’t ask anyone to try-out. Whoever showed up is who they chose from. What exactly is an “elite” team anyway? Because someone calls it elite means something? The original dream team was an elite team.

  21. kennymo

Coach Ricci, How is the young lady doing up at Umass( Mcdonald , I believe)? That game when you guys beat MV ( the Awerdick) game was the best female game I have ever been to and top three of any game. You did an amazing job in beating them. if you were advising B Shields, do you think she should go low d1 or an NYU type? Keep up the great work.

  22. ballboy

Is there any official decision yet on who are the final 10 for the team, and who are the alternates. No matter what it should be a godd competitive squad, and good luck preparing.

  23. Hoops Brother

Have they picked the team yet?

  24. Coach Ricci

No, we should have the team picked next week. All 13 girls will be asked to stay with the team. 10 will make the team and three will be alternates.

  25. hoops junkie

How could that team not include KC Jentzen and Lauren Kahn. Thats the biggest joke of all. Kahn is better than at least 4 of the guards.

  26. bball

Heard Kahn’s playing lacrosse, Jentzen could’ve played forward or guard for this team and the team would have been much better. Don’t know why they’re not on it but it’s not because of talent. Very fast athletic kids.

  27. Rockball

I hear Kahn and Jentzen are very busy and fine with not playing so let’s wish the girls playing this year well and move on

  28. Waruld

Respectable post. All very good points. In That Respect are a few places that I’ve recorded at in order to input, but they are few and far between. Interesting statistics ) I was actually meaning about remarks last night.
