Changes, changes, changes…they keep on a comin’

October

So here we are, the offseason churning toward the preseason with full force, and The Sixth Man hit a snag.

As you probably figured over the last five days, all of our blogs have been down since last Wednesday. We appear to have returned at full force, which is good news because…I have more transfer news to report, though none of it will help Section 1.

First off, the rumor that Lynasia Frazier left Mount Vernon is true. The freshman point guard has moved with her family to Baltimore, Maryland, as confirmed by Knights coach Patrice Wallace-Moore

My take: This is an equally tough loss for Section 1 as it is for MV. Frazier — who started for the Knights as an eighth grader and was the third-leading scorer and leading assist-getter on the Class AA runner-up — had the type of talent that could one day land her on ESPN and ESPN2. I think she could be that good, a mid-to-high Division I player. So it goes without saying that I think she will be a major loss as MV tries to become the favorite in Class AA. She had great quickness and vision, and I think she would’ve been a nightmare for opponents this season after a year of maturation.

I have also confirmed with Sue Adams that Paige Sprewell has left White Plains and moved back to Milwaukee. Sprewell was the fourth-leading scorer last season for the Tigers, and helped lead them into the state quarters.

My take: White Plains needed Sprewell to score and rebound the way she did in the state regional semis, the game that Kim Adams went down with a dislocated shoulder. With her and Angelei Aguirre in the fold, White Plains was still an outside contender to compete for the AA title if things broke right. But that will be difficult to achieve without Sprewell, who would’ve been the Tigers most experienced inside scorer and rebounder.

What a crazy offseason this has been…

This moves Dan Ricci’s team into the top spot. I really want to see him kiss center court at the county center again.

  2. Josh Thomson

I’d be careful. Mount Vernon made it to the final last year, and they will have almost all of their starting lineup back, switching Frazier for Taylor Palmer. Ursuline should be strong as well, with Rosie Crean, Shelby Sferra and Shannon Ray returning.

  3. WPfan

Could be a difficult year for White Plains after losing four of it’s five starters.

Frazier is a big loss for Mount Vernon, but they have some up and coming young gaurds who with a little seasoning could be ready to fill her shoes come County Center time. Given their level of talent, and experience, they seem to be the team to beat going into this season.

  4. Draftboy

Josh, all these transfers are troubling. I’ve always heard the jokes about Lourdes and Ursulne, but now Albertus as well? If some player transfers from a public to a Catholic or private they should have to sit 1 year, isn’t that the rule? Are we at the point where its “we’ll sick our lawyers on you” and the section and the schools run for cover? What are these girls “hardships” so that a transfer is legit? Pandora’s box my friend.

  5. Josh Thomson

Draftboy…I hope I answered your question in my most recent post.

  6. The Big NO

Coach Rick Rock Ricci’s girls are defensively challenged and therefore will be lucky to win 10 games. He made a big mistake by not bringing in a defensive guru like Coach Desi to whip his girls into shape.

  7. ballboy

Having seen Ricci’s girls play last season and over the summer as an AAU team the last thing I would call them is defensively challenged. The scrambled and scattered game that they attempt to force you into is very hard to play against and prepare for. I would be suprised if they are not serious contenders this year in AA

  8. The Return of Scoop Jackson

Ricci is an offensive minded coach who doesn’t teach the basics of “put it on ‘em” full court defense. He needs a defensive garoo to go in there and really teach the Lady Indians a thing or two about “PUT IT ON ‘EM” D!

  9. ballboy

I am by no means a Ricci lover as a matter of fact I am not an Ossining fan at all as I am sure past posts will testify too. However Ossining did play suffocating full court defense in all the games I saw them in last year. It is going to be a very exciting year and hopefully a team from Dutchess County can make some noise this year. There are some really solid teams up here this year

  10. The Big O

Hey Scoop, why don’t you suggest that Dan Ricci get Rich Desiderio to help him. He is a defensive guru, isn’t he?

  11. Scoop's Revenge

I believe Ossining should oust Coach Ricci and bring in a defensive minded coach. I hear the JV coach at Bronxville is a defensive stud.

  12. BBall Dad

    Josh,

Have you spoken with Sue Adams of White Plains re: her coaching plans? Is she staying on board? How much longer? She is a terrific coach, and local talents would be drawn to the high school if she has long-term plans of coaching.

    Bball Dad

  13. Josh Thomson

Bball Dad…Sue is still the coach at White Plains.

  14. BBall Dad

    Josh,

Does Sue Adams plan to coach for the next 3 years? There is talk that she is staying for only 2 more years.

  15. e ferg

there was a coaching change at leake and watts the jv coach jimmie kimbro is taking over the place for coach mike bright.

  16. O town mom

    To Big No

How would you like someone talking about you dsughter that way. The Ossining girls have worked hard and through some tough injuries and are stronger for it. I don’t know what Ossining did to anyone but it seems that everyone’s out to get us. Coach Ricci is a great coach and only has the girls best interest in mind. Insulting teensges shows that your not very mature yourself
