Game 10: Irvington 61, Put Valley 34

December

Tara Gabelman (right) had 25 points and 17 rebounds in a dominant performance by the Bulldogs. She constantly converted off the boards, and off assists from Riley Harrington and Lisa Bucci. They combined for nine assists.

I’ll have more later and I’ll have the player of the week tomorrow. There was too much to post today, so I’m going to have to reconsider when to post that in the future.

(UPDATE 11:04 p.m.) More on the game: Obviously this was a great performance from Gabelman, who has improved by leaps and bounds from the last time I saw her play. She plays much bigger now and that presence is something Irvington will have and a lot of its opponents won’t.

The same can be said about Harrington and Bucci. They push the ball so well and throw passes from distances and angles you simply wouldn’t expect passes to come from. I don’t know how many times they threw passes from the three-point line or half court tonight that either led to a basket or led to the pass that led to the basket. It was definitely a lot though.

The Bulldogs are without Gillian Morley, who is out about a month with a stress fracture in her leg. Gina Maher told me it will help the rest of the team to play without Morley because they will be better when Morley returns to full strength. That may prove especially true for Gabelman, who is now forced to do just about everything in the paint without having Morley to lean on.

Putnam Valley has its own growing to do as well, although it may not reap such grand results. The Tigers lost Nicole Scott for the season (ACL) and are also without Tara Gleason, who started last year but has decided to focus on soccer. That leaves them without any starters from last season’s Class B finalist. Ouch.

For this game at least, Amanda DeChent appeared up to the challenge. So did Katie Geyer, who played well after her JV callup last winter. What will decide Put Valley’s season — namely whether or not it rallies to qualify for sectionals — is who joins those two for the ride…

On a personal note, I’m off to RCDS on Wednesday for the game against unbeaten Holy Child. Unfortunately that will be all the basketball for me this week, which I’m kind of sour about. We’ll still have plenty to fill our sports pages, like the Somers tourney championship and Peekskill vs. Mount Vernon (covered by arch-nemesis Jake) and Pearl River vs. North Rockland on Saturday, which is probably the biggest game of the week.

A couple results:

— Nearly a quadruple-double for Nadia Duncan, who had 17 points, eight boards, eight assists and nine steals in Mount Vernon’s 79-23 win over Saunders. Contrary to popular opinion, the Knights have not yet won the gold ball.

— The Class C semifinals were held tonight…err, not really. But Haldane did beat Dobbs Ferry 53-35 and Blind Brook did beat Hamilton — without Shereen Lightbourne (knee) — 46-30. Both games were rematches of last season’s semis.
