Girls basketball in the Lower Hudson Valley

For the up-and-comers, first blood goes to Nanuet

There are two teams in Class B knocking on the County Center door and they met tonight at Irvington. My colleague Dan Marra was in the building and saw Nanuet overcome an early deficit to beat the Bulldogs 67-54.

Both teams are young but precocious. They had just two losses between them before tonight. But this result gives the Golden Knights an edge going forward. After missing the playoffs last year, they are not only in line to qualify but to perhaps make the County Center.

Irvington still finds itself in fine position, too, but the Bulldogs probably entered the game as a slight favorite. They were still without Gillian Morley, who they definitely miss, but they had a lot more success last season than Nanuet.

From what Dan told me, it sounded like a competitive game. Irvington actually led 15-4 in the first quarter before Nanuet responded. KC Jentzen, who led the way with 22 points, helped steer a comeback. Her team went ahead at the half and built upon that lead in the second half. When I called Dan to get the score it was midway through the third quarter and Nanuet led by five. When I called again the Golden Knights were up 10 with a minute to go.

Both teams pressed the entire game, but as you can see by the score Nanuet slowly but surely pulled away, similar to what happened against Pearl River. The Golden Knights are now 9-1 and in second place in League III-C after one trip through the murderers row of Albertus, Irvington and Pearl River.

— The photo is by Mike Roy. It’s of Irvington’s Lisa Bucci, #10, driving to the basket as Nanuet defenders Nikki Sapanaro, #24, left, Katie Maher, #12, back, and Lauren Kahn, #10, right, give chase.

— Thanks to those of you who called in tonight to “Varsity Central Extra.” A couple didn’t make it on the air, so please try back again next week. There were so many phone calls we never got to Irvington-Nanuet even though it was on Ben’s list of topics to discuss.
