Sectionals cheat-sheet

Good morning everyone! You’ll find me in such a good mood today for the following reasons: 1. I’m fresh off a mini-break, 2. The G-Men are going to the Super Bowl, and 3. I just perused through the offerings on our new website and was thoroughly impressed. “I recommend you check out the recent videos here.”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=VIDEO03 They include: Meghan Murphy’s thoughts on scoring 1,000 and highlights from the Albertus Magnus-Nanuet game that show about five incidents of our current player of the week either falling or being knocked to the floor. Ouch…
So here’s how my mood affects you, the loyal reader: This will be the regular-season home for anything and everything Sectionals.
I sat here at The Sixth Man Home Office and realized that a few of you have clamored for info on the postseason. So ask and you shall receive…after having to ask a couple times.
THE SCHEDULE â€â€
Feb. 11: Regular season ends
Feb. 11: Seeding meeting, at Ossining HS
Feb. 13: Class AA outbracket games, at higher seed
Feb. 14-15: Class AA, A and B first-round games, at higher seed
Feb. 19-20: Class AA, A, B and C quarterfinals, at higher seed
Feb. 25-March 2: Semifinals and finals (all classes), at the County Center
THE RULES TO QUALIFY â€â€
1. .400 overall winning percentage
2. .500 winning percentage against teams in same class
3. .500 winning percentage against teams in same class and higher classes
Notes: A) Records are taken from ALL games played. B) Teams must only meet one criteria to qualify.
TIEBREAKERS â€â€
In the event of a tie between two teams, the higher seed is given based on the following:
1. Head-to-head record
2. Common opponents
3. Committee selection
POINT SYSTEM â€â€
The seeds are determined using the following formula:
1. Take the number of wins for a team and multiply it by four (4). For ex.: If Nanuet wins 15 Section 1 games, then it has earned 60 points.
2. Add a bonus point (1) for each win against an opponent from one class higher. Add two (2) for an opponent two classes higher, and so on. For ex.: Haldane, Class C, beat Brewster, Class A, and gets two bonus points.
3. Divide that final total by the total number of games, wins and losses, played against Section 1 opponents. For ex.: If Hamilton wins 10 of its 20 Section 1 games, and earned six bonus points, it’s final total would be 46. So, here’s a little math, 46 divided by 20 is…2.3.
4. Hamilton’s index would then be: 2.3.
Note: Remeber, the higher the index the better the seed.

since Pearl River and Sleepy Hollow are in the same league (B)does everyone in their league who beat them get the extra points since they’re actually in class A?
There were a couple corrections I just made, one under “Rules to Qualify” and another under “Tiebreakers.” The most important revolves around qualifying…a team can qualify based on its record in ALL games, not just Section 1 games. Section 1 games are then used to determine the team’s index for seeding.
Wondering…Yes.
Methods of Qualifying: A team only needs to meet one of the following standards:
1. 40% – Overall Record vs. Section 1 Teams
2. 50% – Class Record (total number of games played in
your class)
3. 50% – Class Record and Above Your Class Record
(ex.- Class B school is 5-7 in Class B,
1-0 vs. a Class A Team and 1-0 vs. a
Class AA Team for an overall record of
all games in Class B, A & AA of 7 wins-
7 losses.
I just did some # crunching and according to the above info, class A would look like this if section play started today:
Seed/School/Point Index
1 – Beacon 3.86
2 – Spring Valley 3.15
3 – Tappan Zee 2.83
4 – Pelham 2.76
5 – Byram Hills 2.75
6 – Pearl River 2.50
7 – Lakeland 2.39
8 – Somers 1.94
9 – Brewster 1.92
10 – Rye 1.85
11 – Peekskill 1.79
That’s as far as I felt like going. Now remember, these are NOT official.
Job very well done Juice. I started the process last night as well, and your numbers appear to be on the money according to what I have. Nyack also has a pretty decent chance of qualifying for sectionals. There is still a lot of big games that can effect the numbers so we will have to look at it towards the end of next week to get a real accurate picture. Spring Valley and Tappan Zee meet twice in the next 10 days, and there are games with Somers, Brewster and Lakeland that will way on the process as well
League B numbers to date
Magnus 4.45 1
Briarcliff 4.00 T2
Nanuet 4.00 T2
Woodlands 3.66 4
North Salem 3.50 5
Irvington 3.46 6
Edgemont 3.23 7
Kennedy 2.28 8
Dobbs Ferry 2.25 9
Dover 2.22 10
Westlake 1.66 T11
Pawling 1.66 T11
Putnam Valley 1.56 13
These are all the teams who have made the sectionals or have a reasonable chance of doing so.
State rankings out again.
