Well folks, if you “listened to this week’s podcast,”:http://sixthman.lohudblogs.com/2008/01/22/podcast-jan-24/ you know that  after some prodding by me  Josh and I gave our predictions on the Mahopac tournament.
To Josh’s credit, he picked a Lakeland-Scarsdale final.
However, he projected Lakeland winning. I went with Scarsdale.
We just got word that Scarsdale won 38-34.
Under terms of our agreement, if I was indeed right (which would also mean Josh would be wrong I might add), I would get to take over the blog  for tonight.
Perhaps out of embarrassment (although he really shouldn’t be  we all get picks wrong from time to time), Josh is about to vacate the office.
But I will be here for a while, so feel free to post your thoughts on Scarsdale-Lakeland or anything else.

Josh Thomson has done some of everything since joining The Journal News in March 2003. He began working for the Gannett weeklies during the winter of 2002 as a freelance writer. He joined the daily staff soon after and has since covered various high school and pro sports. Away from sportswriting, Josh lives in Westchester and spends his free time either with his fiancee, Sarah, or expertly managing his various championship-winning fantasy sports teams. He's visited 21 major-league baseball stadiums and insists that Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are the best by far. Josh graduated from Carmel High School in 1998, then went to Boston University, where, in 2002, he received a degree in communications with a minor in history.

so let me get this straight—-joe wins the bet and josh gets saturday night off. hmmmmmm….....
on vacation – That’s a very good point. I think Josh may have bamboozled me. That does not change the fact I am 1-0 in predicting games vs. “The Sixth Man.”
sounds like the game was a hard fought defensive struggle. seems like lakeland could use a yankou and scarsdale could use a jarosz.
Joe,
Dying for your old cable tv show again
I emailed you about it last year, that show cracked me up.
Remind me whathappened to the guy with his own show, the crazy haired guy who covered football, jim campion maybe?
Mike – That show was a lot of fun  we did it for around five years. In between all the one-liners, we were able to get some good guests along the way too, including Rick Pitino, John Starks, Allan Houston, Fran Fraschilla, John Davidson, Fran Healy, as well as plenty of high school athletes and coaches. Oh wait  I almost forgot  Bobby Gonzalez made a trip up to the studio, too.
As for Jim Campion, I don’t remember his hair being that crazy, but he did have a call-in show and did cover HS football. Not sure where he’s at now.
I remember your e-mail by the way and hope all’s well with you.
This blog will now be known as “The End of the Bench”
I heard that the Poo Poo Bandit and the Great Gazoo (the new one anyway) made an appearance in Mahopac this weekend to catch the festivities. I’m sure that he jinxed the hometown Indians.
Well Josh, I guess that Scarsdale is officially a bubble team
Watching both games lakeland played i dont see why Pappalardo shouldnt have gotten the all tournament team. She did a good job both offensivly and defensivly and has been since she came back to play.
Lakeland should of taken that tournament without a doubt. If they finished under the basket they definitly would of won.
this is to confused: who did get the all tournament? when i went to one of lakeland’s games, i didnt see too much out of papp. But then again they were 0 and 5 to start..
Just a point that I wanted to mention this upcoming week starting with Monday is Coaches vs Cancer week at the high school level. Hopefully we will see some coaches participate and some schools with events surrounding the week. Coaches are asked to coach their game or games in sneakers. I have met many coaches over the past couple of years, and I know firsthand that compassion a strong desire to help others is a must have to be a coach at the high school level. Maybe this year participation will be a little bit better as it has been in the past. Obviously this is an issue that most of us have dealt with in our lives.
As a side note coming from a fan of Dutchess basketball Josh, you do an outstanding job with coverage and have improved coverage of the girl’s sports immensely since this blog. You give most of the Dutchess teams better coverage than their own paper does. Keep up the good work
JOHN JAY EF HAS A BIG WEEK, THE LEAGUE CROWN IS ON THE LINE. IT HAS BENN ALONG WHILE SINCE THE LAST ONE. OLL AT JJEF ON THE 31ST AT 6PM. JJEF CURENTLY UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY.
Jarosz got MVP and Johnson got all tournament.
Confused has it half right. LoBue and Carr from Scarsdale were all tournament,as well as Jarosz and Johnson from Lakeland. There was no so called MVP.
to “Question”,
FYI….Lakeland was 0-5 in the beginning of the season. Pappalardo was out those games with a broken finger. That’s why you didn’t see or hear much of her those 5 games.
Lhsfan1
Pappalardo’s been tearin it up since then!!!!!!!!!!
Pappalardo’s been tearin’ it up since her return!!!!
i also saw the game against greeley, was she playing then?
Jarosz was out in the beginning of the year too. Who do you think had a bigger impact?
I think Tori is an amazing player. Pappalardo and Jarosz work very well together. They compliment each other. Lakeland has a great team in the making.
lhsfan1,
I agree with what you say about Tori and that Lakeland will be a very good team, if they aren’t there already. However, Papp is not in the same league as Tori is. Without Tori, it is quite possible that Lakeland would still be winless. I’m not putting Papp down, but anyone who has seen Lakeland play knows that she isn’t “tearin’ it up.”
im not sure if lakeland would win if tori was out, but i do think they could manage. Heck, of course anyone team could use a height advantage like that. My question is, if Lakeland gets to Sectionals at County Center and they play a team like Beacon, I do not think even with Tori that they would be able to win it. As for Papp, I think she could be a great player from what I hear, but I haven’t seen much from Lakeland so far.
A player like Tori is the great equalizer because she is not only a factor on offense but can take over a game defensively. Her height is a major factor and she moves pretty well for a girl of her size. She is not just the biggest factor on her team but she is one of the 5 most imposing players in section one
You’re definitely entitled to your opinion Ballin’. My opinion is that Pappalardo definitely makes a difference. She can handle the ball, she brings it up and dishes it out great. Her passes are on the money. Just MY opinion.
I agree with the fact that Jarosz i an amazing player, on offense. But I have seen her slack quite a bit on defense. In the game against Scarsdale that i saw, Jarosz had been shut down towards the end of the game and on the defensive end, I think LoBue had maybe 5 shots on her, without a hand even up. Although she is a great impact, she can do much better in my opinion from what I saw.
Without question Tori needs to work on her speed and agility to be a great player. LoBue and Scarsdale were smart; they took her away from the basket a little to see if she was up for the challenge. They exploited her weakness. As for Pappalardo, late in the game when Scarsdale decided to pressure the ball a little, deny on the wings and front the post, she didn’t handle it very well either.
You have to remember that these are 2 very young players with tons of upside potential. If they have the right attitude (questionable) and they are willing to work hard then they will be very good players. Tori is already very good on the offensive end of the court.
You are right about the potential in both Jarosz and pap. One of my buddies knows someone on the Somers girls basketball team and he had went to the game. Somers wasnt a very good team, but he said Jarosz did nothing out there. On the other hand,he said Papp. had around 15 points, most of which were fastbreak points. Even though she may have had a great game, that doesnt say anything about her skill, considering they were mostly fastbreak points, and they did not play a very good team. A point gaurd is a point guard, to set up all of his/her players; not worry about what they are doing themselves. Just a question, anyone else on Lakeland worth mentioning? (size, speed, offensive ability, or even defense?)
As far as other players to watch, yes, Lakeland has got quite a bit of talent. Vicky Kowalski has proven to be a consistent outside three-point shooter and together with the ball handling skills of Papp and the inside dominance of Jarosz, add some of their solid defensive players; they will definitely have a shot at a section title or more in the next year or two. Keep in mind all these players are only sophomores with room for much growth.
That is a very good point you have. Considering most are in Tenth grade sys a lot about their potential. I cannot believe I am yet again posting in this old blog, but I do think Lakeland can get far, I guess we will all have to see.
