Game 25: With another chance, Ursuline dominates New Ro

January
29

Well, Ursuline struggled mightily against New Rochelle the first time around, winning by just three. But that was a distant memory today. The Koalas blitzed their crosstown rival 66-30.

Ursuline pushed the ball effectively, scoring 20 points in the first quarter. Shelby Sferra (23 points, 14 rebounds) and Shannon Ray (17 points) controlled the game from their positions, but the Koalas got contributions from pretty much every player on the team. Claire McEvily, who played JV ball at New Ro as an eighth grader, started for the first time (that I know of), and had seven boards.

New Rochelle is struggling right now in all phases. Leading scorer Chrissy Conroy is out with mono, but it wasn’t just her absence that hurt them today. The Huguenots caused a lot of trouble with their press last time but Ursuline picked it apart.

This was my first look at New Ro, which has some nice talent. Right now they’re definitely missing a No. 1 option on offense and they need to take better care of the ball. That’s probably not news to anyone who’s seen them, but it can’t be easy. League I-A is not where a team goes to earn some confidence.

    Josh,

It sounds as if you picked the wrong game. I just returned from the Mt. Vernon White Plains game which was tremendous.

White Plains took the lead two minutes into the second half and held it until the final minute where free throw shooting turned the tide.

White Plains was up one (41-40) and shooting one and one with a minute twenty and missed the front end. They got a stop on the other end and were fouled again with a minute 8 still leading where they missed the front end of another one and one.

Mercer hit six straight free throws in the last minute to pull this victory out. White Plains played incredible defense and Aguirre was simply on another level and ended up with 29 points.

I would think White Plains will be disappointed that they did not close this game out but it certaintly proves that they will be a very difficult out come playoff time.

Beacon defeated Hen Hud today 64-22 behind 14 points, 9 rebound, and 9 assists from Ally Biordi, and 10 points a piece from Kara Tancredi, and Katie Hallock. Point Guard Bri Melilli had another solid game to follow up a double double last night, with 8 points, 3 boards, 3 assists, and 6 steals. The game was over early as beacon jumped out to a 21-5 lead after one and 35-12 lead at the half. To hen Hud’s credit they played hard the whole game, and they have some good young talent and a good coach that will do a solid job developing them, and make them a decent team in the future. All the coaches looked good in their sneakers. Beacon moves on to play Kingston at 5:30 on Friday at Mount Saint Mary’s College
