Coon headed to Albany

April
28

coon.jpgOne more college chip has fallen into place. Briarcliff senior Shelby Coon has committed to play ball at Albany on a full scholarship.

I spoke to Shelby today. She had whittled her list down to seven: Albany, Bucknell, Cornell, Boston University, Hartford, Vermont, and Rider. Obviously, it became harder to take visits because the Bears kept extending their season, but she went on a couple trips in recent weeks and decided she really liked Albany.

Albany finished 13-18 last season but posted a program-best 10-6 mark in conference. Coach Trina Patterson was named America East Conference coach of the year and recently signed a two-year extension.

It seems like a nice fit for Coon, who led Briarcliff in scoring and rebounding and was named MVP of the Section 1 tournament. With state and Federation titles and now this, her senior season went about as well as she could’ve hoped. Congrats to her.

Josh thanks for the update….congrats to Coon as she is a terrific player and Albany seems like a great fit for her….so looks like she had plenty of quality mid major division 1 schools looking at her to all of those who doubted her. It seems as though this could be a great fit for her as albany is a team on its way up and Coon is a player with great potential. Best of luck to her at Albany and I look forward to hearing where Angelei ends up too!

Congrats Shelby!! Your hard work over the past years has really paid off. You are a great girl and a very talented player and I wish you the best at Albany and in whatever else you decide to do in your life. As if leading your team to a state and federation championship wasn't enough, now a full division 1 scholarship to a great up and coming mid major program to top it off! Congrats

Congrats to Coon, but Dan, Albany is not a mid major!

However, a full ride is a full ride!!!

  4. Anon

Excuse me but I think this is in really bad taste. Governor Paterson doesn't deserve the kind of name calling and overt racism that this headline implies.

  5. timhoops

Congrats Shelby this is a major accomplishment that few people get to achieve in life. Best of luck at Albany I know you will go on to do great things. I know you will help albany improve even more over the next few years. It is a great mid major program that (the last time I checked) sits outside of the top 100 but has continually improved. Best of luck and I cant wait to see your own individual improvement as well! Go great Danes!

Usually what makes a team mid-major is their conference. Since the America East is a mid-major conference with a top 50 team in Hartford, yes, Albany is a mid-major conference school. Either way congrats to shelby, I know she will go on to do great things and like timhoops said, make Albany even better. Good luck!

  7. Mike Hoops

The America East is NOT a mid major!!!

The conference has 3 wins in the NCAAs in the last 17 years.

    Why cant people be real???????

  8. gina

yes, it is. I do not know where you come from but the majors are the big east, pac 10, big 10, sec, conferences like those. Mid majors include the macc, america east, caa, a-10 etc. Get over it it is a mid major obviously maybe you should do more research. There was recently an articel written about mid major conferences and there success, included was the america east (hartford), caa (old dominion), and macc (marist). Therefore making the america east a mid major. a mid major conference doesnt mean that they have schools in the top 10 but simply that their conference winner is always competitive outisde of the conference and other criteria like that. This is not even worth arguing though. Best of luck to Shelby Albany is a great school and a an up and coming program which I know she will succeed at.

  9. dan

before telling people they are wrong you should know what a term means. And mid-major are the best conferences outside of the biggest (Acc, sec, big east, pac 10 etc) And america East is included in that list (which is 25 long). Site such as this one http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/154722 break down the mid major conferences including the america east so know more before you tell people they are wrong. THis is not what this is for right now though….congrats to SHelby you have done and will continue to do great things and you deserved this. Looks like people who said you couldnt play d1 were wrong! Have fun and good luck next year!

  10. hoooppppppssss

Shelby you are so HOTTTTT have my babies?

  11. Mike Hoops

    Dan and Gina,

The article you cite is saying EVERY conference thats not a MAJOR is a MID Major!!!

That is just silly!! Albany is a nice school, D1 no doubt, a great accomplishment. BUTTTTTTT, its not a mid major.

unless you consider the SWAC and the MEAC and the MAAAC mid majors also??

  12. dan

you make it seem like a mid major is a top 10 school . The AEC Is a mid major conference of which there are at least 10, thats just the way it goes. The macc is definitely a mid major conference and they play even and even at times get outplayed by aec schools. But Why are you even arguing this?? who cares! she is going to a great school which she decided fits her well. We should all just wish her and her team the best of luck and move on. I cant wait to see what kind of success she has there after leading her hs team so far this year. Good luck Shelby!

  13. mike hoops

When Gonzaga men are a mid major, or DRake or Butler is a mid major its just wrong to associate them with teams likes Albany, Delaware, Hartford,Manhattan, Siena….

  14. Jaimie

While I don't think that Albany is a mid-major, that is only a personal opinion.

The following link is an ESPN article explaining the problems with the term Mid-Major:

THis might by far be the stupidest argument to be on here….Bottom line (Albany being a mid major or not) is that Coon is headed to a terrific school for her business major, and is joining an up and coming basketball program. Hopefully she will do her thing and lead Albany to go on to do great things. Just like what Hood and Hartford have done, it is always possible for any of the "mid-major" or not top 25 teams all over the country to do, and you never know maybe it will happen at Albany next (which would be very interesting since they are both the same conference). Coon is a terrific leader (led her team to state and federation championships) and has so much potential to be great so I am very eager to see what she does in the coming years! COngrats Coon (and now Angelei) on your decisions, now go and do section 1 and all of your family and friends proud at your respective division 1 schools!

Shelby, I wish you the best. You are a great girl and I was glad for the opportunity to watch you play
