One last time

April

There’ll be one last moment in the sun (or at least in the intense glare of florescent TV lights) on RNN tonight. The show will kick off with highlights of Briarcliff’s dominant weekend at the Federation tournament.

Check out the show tonight at 6:30 p.m. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-888-RNN-CHAT.

MV’s Duncan LaSalle-bound

April
2

The news I alluded to yesterday was this: Nadia Duncan has commmitted to play ball at LaSalle.

Mount Vernon coach Patrice Wallace-Moore announced Duncan’s decision last night at the all-section dinner. It’s obviously a great achievement for the 5-foot-10 senior, who played four years of varsity ball for the Knights.

I, for one, am not the least bit surprised. LaSalle must’ve attended five Mount Vernon games that I know of, so I was sure the staff there wanted Duncan. She’s a perfect college player: very athletic but plenty of room to grow.

I was convinced this season Duncan will ultimately thrive in college because of her athleticism and upside. She reminds me a great deal of New Ro’s April McBride, who I always felt had barely scratched the surface. Duncan has already developed further than McBride in many ways, and just look at what McBride has done at Maryland-Eastern Shore. She’s blossomed into a star.

I plan on chatting with Duncan this week. She told me yesterday she’ll officially sign her letter at Mount Vernon High School on April 16. MV always does a great job with its signings, and I wouldn’t expect anything less here.

Guest Speaker — Cori Chambers: The 2003 Ursuline grad talked for a few minutes at tonight’s dinner. She told the girls how she sat in their place five years ago, but now she returned as a three-time all-SEC player, the leading 3-point shooter in Georgia history and a member of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. Her point…work hard and (you never know) one day five years from now this could be you.

Shields’ Class C player of the year honor highlights all-state selections

April
1

If you haven’t seen it, the all-state teams were announced today. Haldane senior Brittany Shields — surprise, surprise! — was named the Class C state player of the year.

Shields wasn’t the only LoHudder honored with a top award. Don Hamlin (Class B) and Kenny Haskins (Class C) were both named coach of the year.

Section 1 had two players earned first-team honors (Shields in C and Briarcliff’s Shelby Coon in Class B) and two earn second-team honors (Angelei Aguirre in AA and Porsha Postell in B).

Big night in Mahopac

April
1

The top players and coaches from Section 1 will convene tonight at the Villa Barone in Mahopac for the annual all-section dinner. More than 80 players will be honored, including the all-section and all-section honorable mentions, the all-academic team, and the Isabel Costa Award winner. I’ve already posted the all-section selections, but I’ll post the picks for all-academic and the Costa Award as soon as I return from the dinner.

I also know of some news that will be announced tonight concerning one senior’s college commitment, so stay tuned for that as well.

Kennedy searching for a new coach

April
1

I’ve heard Kennedy is looking for its third coach in four years after Mike Rama resigned from his post recently. The Gaels earned the ninth-seed in Class B this season but fell to eighth-seeded Dobbs Ferry in the opening round.

Rama, who is from Carmel, replaced Rich Desiderio in 2006 after Kennedy reached the County Center. Desiderio left to take the job at Haldane.

Obviously, I don’t know who’s interested in the job at Kennedy but it’s a place with loads of potential. Just check out what the boys have done in the last decade.
