  1. BUCKETBOY

    Josh,
Has the scholastic team been picked yet?

  2. Josh Thomson

BUCKETBOY…It has not been picked, although the first tryout was already held.

  3. baskball

sure it's been picked it's called the wba lady knicks (+1 or 2 who won't play to make it look good)

  4. bball fan

    Baskball,
Could not agree more with you…

  5. Basketball_Lover

17 girls were picked from what I heard and 2 more try-outs this week are needed to decide. 10 on the team and 5 alternates. Who do you think they could/should be?

  6. one who knows

It will be the same story – I agree with baskball. Both the scholastic and open teams are all ready picked- the try-outs are to make it look good .

  7. bball

All I know is that my daughter who isn't one of the 17 went to three tryouts and said the coaches stood in the middle talking and maybe 1/4 of the time watched the players. How do you have a tryout and not assign girls numbers, we're suppose to believe you personally know all the players, NO, you know the players you want to know!! My daughter could have dunked and it wouldn't have mattered. I was warned by many people not to waste my daughters time and they were right. All I know is there is a player who was on the team last year that at least half a dozen girls are better then, including my daughter, but that won't matter either. You had 5 from last year and you know what five you want all this is to pick alternates and if you were men you would admit that.

  8. one who knows

BBALL IS CORRECT-TRYOUTS WITHOUT NUMBERS!!! When you go to any college showcase they give all the girls numbers- The girls they coach or play against of course they know how they play already- the situation at thoses try-outs is the same year after year
    1) no numbers
    2) coaches standing around talking about the Yankees not watching the try-outs, laughing and joking around
    3) some girls making one tryout and becuase the coach knows them they are good to go
4)coaches telling dads when they come in where the practices will be and they will see this player on such and such date after only coming to one try-out and leaving early and the team is not suppose to be even made yet!
    5) you can tell by the dads that hang around the coaches who the players on the Empire Team will be.

    6) Running Lady Knicks plays at try-outs – an advantage to those players- I would think yes! And then yelling at players who need to see or run the plays a few times

I think the coaches are good coaches and do give their time and I for one appreciate their hard work but maybe there might be a better way to represnt ALL OF THE HUDSON VALLEY.

  9. Hello

Please tell me one player last year that should have made the team but didnt?

  10. smokey

This is exactly what is wrong with sports today. Parents who think that their little Suzie should be on a team like that. If she is so deserving then post her name and let the people who judge these things fairly tell you weather she belongs or not. In the same manner, when a final team is picked, I want to hear who DOES NOT BELONG on the team, and why. That's a fair discussion, isn't it?

I think that the three coaches could name every player in the gym by name and school. You can take that to the bank.
Of course the players that made the team last year have an advantage because the coaches know them. If they proved that they belong, then they will stay, doesn't that just make sense?

  11. one who knows

    IT IS WHAT IT IS.

  12. Hello

one who knows, one who knows nothing.

  13. bball fan

Its always about who you know and always will be. Smokey, the coaches may know who the girls are but are they really given a fair chance AT TRYOUTS to show they belong on the team?? I agree that there is a lot of talent here, but decisions should be based on play at the tryouts, not which AAU organization you play for…

  14. Smokey

    bball fan,

That is very unfair. Please, when the final team is made, tell me who doesn't belong and who should have made it. Also remember, there are some very good players who don't even tryout because their schedules are already too full so you can't count them.

The best players who tryout make the team, period.

  15. The Poo Poo Bandit

I know this blog hasn't cured cancer or figured out what to do about third world debt but I think we have figured out a thing or two. For instance…

    1. The Lady Knicks are the "Fonzie" of AAU organizations in the Hudson Valley. If your daughter doesn't play for them then she has no chance to be on anything including: The Empire State Team, Ms. America, Future Leaders of America, Chamber of Commerce, Mayberry Bugle Core, Mensa, World Trade Organization or NAMBLA.

    2. If your daughter doesn't play for the Lady Knicks don't even think about playing college basketball. As a matter of fact there are many colleges and universities where the punishment for wearing high topped sneakers is public flogging.

    3. John Reilly is "The Buddha of the Hardwood" and Luke Vaccaro is Jesus.

    4. Dan Ricci is a partisan who should be fired from coaching the Empire State Team. I mean really how could he possibly know who to pick when he doesn't know the birthdate, shoe size and blood type of every girl in Section I? That's coaching 101!

    5. The Empire coaches are Yankee fans who the audacity to laugh at tryouts. Not only that but they don't give the players numbers during tryouts. I can't believe there is a God that would allow atrocities like this to happen. I shed a tear just thinking about it.

    6. Certain fathers slightly just slightly have a hard team seeing their daughter for the mediocre player she truly is. That she is among the 99.94% of players that are decent but not great. Certain fathers need some psychotherapy because they haven't let go of the fact that were among the 99.94%. Instead of therapy for themselves they put all of their aspirations into their daughters and when she doesn't fulfill his delusional fantasies he blames society.

    7.

  16. The Poo Poo Bandit

I purposely left 7 blank as it is my silent cry for all of the deserving girls who didn't make the Empire Team this year. This is my form of protest and I am thinking of picketing the Empire Games this year. I have contacted Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Hawthorne Wingo to see what can be done to fix this bloody massacre that keep happening year after year. When will the good people of Section I step up to make this stop happening? Come on people!!

  17. bball fan

Ok, Smokey and Poo Poo, you are right and we are all wrong. You both are too ridiculousand I cannot believe I am even responding to your comments. However, everyone knows life is about "Who you know," as much as you pretend it is not, it is!! And this is no different. Not taking away from the talented girls chosen, there surely was plenty of talent which maybe was overlooked due to unfamiliarity with the coaches. It also happens this way in ESG girls Lacrosse. But, it's ok, what goes around comes around….

  18. smokey

    bball fan,

This is simple, when the team is announced, just tell us who doesn't belong on the team and why? or, if you choose, tell us who should be on the team but isn't?

Why can't you mention the player if they are so worthy?

I don't agree with Poo Poo either. If a player is clearly one of the top two players at her position she will make the team regardless of what AAU team or High School team she plays for.

  19. HELLO

bball fan, once again please tell us what player was wronged in the recent past? PUT UP OR——UP.

  20. bball fan

I am not talking about one particular player, my child or otherwise, just the system. Thanks, but I will refrain from naming any child's name on this blog…Goodbye

  21. the fan

The problem with most coaches is that they don't understand that the process is more important than who actually ends up on the team. When a person tries out for a team (male or female) the coach or coaching staff owes that person the respect to watch the participants intensely throughout the whole tryout process. After that the coach does not have to answer about the makeup of the team. As long as the process is fair no one should complain about the selection. It is the appearance of an unfair process that causes problems with parents and players.

  22. one who knows

    THE FAN
WELL SAID .It is the appearance of an unfair process that causes problems with players and parents.
And to have people name teenage girls who should make the team or should have not made the team on this blog is wrong.

  23. just a fan

Answer this: If the coaches already know who will be on the team, then why have 2 add'l try-outs to eliminate only 2 girls? They must know who will be on the team and who will be alternates by now. Why put the girls all through this?

  24. HELLO

they just like to talk about the yanks.

  25. Smokey

The few people here who seem to have a problem with it have daughters who are a little above average but cannot compare to the talent on the team.

  26. bball fan

How do you know that the other girls are a "little above average??" You should not speak about which you don't know. There was a lot of talent there that was interchangable. Once again, Smokey, you are ridiculously arrogant.

  27. Boo Boo

A good source has told me that all 3 coaches are METS FANS!!!

  28. Boo Boo

FYI, If you see a black, red and silver leafy pod, run and head for the hills. That means your daughters might be taking over by the Invasion of The Lady Knick Body Snatchers. (See Cori And Lindsay blog)

  29. Boo Boo

A pod was placed along side Josh's bed and I hear now he is really Coach Jerry F. This happen in Dec. of 07.

  30. Boo Boo

Coach Ricci and Coach Reilly had pods placed along side them many years ago and they are really Luke Vaccaro. THE CONSPIRCY continues.

  31. Boo Boo

    Sorry, Conspiracy. just a type-o.

  32. bballwidow

As usual bball is a troublemaker. When you don't get your own way,you cry foul and unfair. Do you yourself go to see how the process works, or are you one of those parents who will sit in their car eating bon bons waiting for your daughter to come out after tryouts?

  33. smokey

    bball fan,

I know this fact – You are the one who is angry.

I'm trying to help you understand that your daughter can't compete with this level of player.

    FACE THE FACTS!

  34. bballwidow

Wrong again!! You are the type that believes you are the one with the most athletic, polular, smart child. Most people have the mental capacity to step back and be objective. I bet your child is never wrong either!!

  35. Yogi

When one of our Scholastic Girls Basketball teams comes home without a medal then we will know it's time to make a change. Until then, all of you naysayer's should keep quiet or name the names of the players who are being wronged. If you can't point to facts then I agree with Smokey and Hello, just shut up.

And bball, if your daughter could dunk she would be on the team, so don't be so ridiculously arrogant. If your daughter is so great then she doesn't need to compete at the Empire State Games because all the top D1 schools are already calling her and she needs a rest. Please crawl back under your rock and leave your poor daughter alone. You are exactly what is wrong with high school sports these days. Instead of encouraging her and helping her with the things she doesn't do well, you are blaming the coach. I'm sure from the way you write that you probably are ruining her life enough already. What your daughter REALLY needs is for someone to be HONEST with her and tell her that she is not good enough, or that she can't shoot, or can't defend, or can't handle the pressure, or she is too slow, or she's too small, or that she is not physical enough, or that she doesn't understand the game, or that she doesn't work hard enough, or that she would be a cancer on the team because of her bad attitude or that there are better players then her at the tryouts. She might even be a good player, but she is not one of the top two at her position in the Hudson Valley. Again, if none of these describe your daughter, then one of the following is true:

    She is on the team.

    Or

    You are lying to her.

    Which is it?

  36. The Poo Poo Bandit

Call the Bandit slow but you lost me with the red and black pods.

This I do know: John "Buddha of the Hardwood" Reilly was the REAL first pregnant man. That dude on Dr. Phil's show is a fraud! Why do you think he lost all that weight? he claims he had a stomach problem. The only stomach problem was, he was carrying Gags' baby. Has anyone seen Gags lately? Two words: Irish Mafia! One more word: Westies! Gags is sleeping with the fish somewhere off of Fire Island!

As for Coach Gerry F. from Mahopac. Word on the street is that he left his wife and he is living with Reilly and the baby in domestic bliss…

  37. HELLO

YOGI,Let me get you a bucket of wings from candle light u deserve it.

  38. Gags

    Hey Poo Poo,

It's me, Gags. I am back but I'm coaching with the Brooklyn Pride in the 25-2-life AAU league where all the REAL PLAYERS ARE. Trust me, we have more Poo Poo Bandits then you can wipe up with a roll of Charmin out here. I don't have to deal with any of those stuck-up Westchester softies who's daddy's come home from Wall Street and tell their girls that Coach Ricci is wrong when he says that they can't play the game.

  39. Yogi

Hello, Only if it's in a picnic basket

  40. Interested

The underclassmen who were on the team last year were Shannon Ray, Blair, Sophie A, Moran, Walker, Postell. There's at least 4 D-1 players in that group. If there are a "half dozen girls" better than any of these six at the tryout, as bball contends, I'd like to see them play.

  41. Yogi

    5 in that group

  42. fan

3 D-1 players walker, postell & sophie. I agree if the team comes home without a medal then you can complain about who did and didn't make it.

  43. d-WHAT

    FAN
You forgot one Moran. The most talented and unselfish player of them all.

  44. balldad

You don't think there's half a dozen guards better then Shannon Ray????? Maybe if her father stopped buying the coaches Burger King they'd be able to see that also. Good player, but no where near the class of Postell, Walker and many others.

  45. d-WHAT

I think the real issue here is the appreance given at the Empire try-outs. There will always be people who think their kid should have made a team. Maybe we should look at the way try-outs are run and try and improve on peoples perception-would this be so hard? Instead of making jokes about it.

There are many talented girls who make the team and deserve to and this is not taking anything away from them. The coaches are also very experienced and hard working. You will not always please everyone- but responding with "pods"
and other foolishness only confirms in some peoples minds that this whole process is a joke and not taken very serious and the PERCEPTION continues and invalidates the process.

And as far as comming home without a medal- as that would prove anything- are you so foolish to believe that if NYC and LI had its BEST players on the empire team instead of playing AAU that the Hudson Valley team would really beat these teams ?

  46. Smokey

Moran also a D-1 and Blair already has a bunch of D-1 lookers. Ray is too young to know yet

  47. 3 oclock player

d-what,the only problem with moran is she needs to show up in the big game. Last year it looked like the presure got to her.Moran is a much better player when she has the ball in her hands. In college i see her as a 2 guard.

  48. Objective

First of all, I think it is really pathetic that when your daughter doesn't make a team, you go on an anonymous blog and complain about it. If any of your kids was deserving enough to be on the ESG team, or even contenders, you wouldn't be anonymously posting disrespectful comments about the coaches. I have never tried out for the ESG team, but I have had friends who did, and they had no complaints, even when two of them did not make the team. John Reilly would cut his own daughter if she wasn't one of the top players trying out. There is no discrimination and no one buys the coaches anything (including Burger King you moron that is probably fat yourself). These coaches donate so much of their time and they are so knowledgeable about the game and trust me they do know every girl trying out, the fact that they don't give numbers as an argument is the stupidest thing i've ever heard. Instead of wasting your time on a blog, why don't you go outside and help your daughter get better at basketball!!! I don't see any of you donating time to coach the team.

....and bball fan, you are ridiculous. 1.) your daughter can't dunk. 2.) If she was in the top two at her position, we would all know who she was. 3.)Your daughter is obviously lying to you because the coaches don't stand around joking and not watching the players.

......and Boo Boo, a source has also told me that all 3 coaches are Mets fans, so why would they stand around talking about the Yankees?

Come on disgruntled parents and players, come up with some better EXCUSES as to why you're not good enough!!!

Peace and good luck to the ESG team this year!!

  49. The Poo Poo Bandit

Ray's father buys BK for the coaches? In that case all of the fathers will finally get their wish 'cause the Bandit is applying for the job next year and we all know I'm a shoe in! Coach Richie better look out because the Bandit is hungry and loves Bacon Double Cheeseburgers!

bballfan and baskball will be happy to know that I am in no way affiliated with the Lady Knicks and their Evil Empire so no Knicks girls will be on any team that has the Bandit at the helm! If a girl tells me she's a Lady Knick my response will be "Whoopdee damn doo!" Props to Derrick Coleman…

  50. Haldane

    Interested
Maybe not a half dozen but just one. I believe she is not a knick either imagine that.

  51. Interested

Everyone needs to look at the make-up of last years 10 girl roster. There were four girls from the Knights (Biordi, Moran, Stallings and Shields). Abrams who did not play for either the Knights or the Knicks. Sophie A, Postell and Walker from the Knicks. And Ray and Blair—I'm not sure which AAU team they played for. Even assuming that both played for the knicks, the final roster would be 40% from Knights, 50% from the Knicks and 10% from other. Hard to claim that there was an overwhelming bias for girls that played for the Knicks. Unless you want to claim that there is a Ricci/Reilly/Viani conspiracy. I don't think so.

  52. Smokey

    Bottom line:

The best players around usually play for these AAU groups

  53. Yogi

I hear that the Knicks are getting kids from Long Island, NYC, Jersey and Connecticut.

    Can anyone verify?

  54. d-WHAT

Did Murphy from Carmel also play last year ?

  55. Interested

She was an alternate—also from the Knights.

  56. Smokey

    d-what,

Not that I think we would ever beat NYC if their best players came to the Empire Games, but you can't say that the best from the Hudson Valley are on the team either; Otherwise we wouldn't even be having this conversation. If ALL of the BEST players tried out each year then the team would be a lot stronger.

  57. d-WHAT

SMOKEY-I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE.

  58. fan

Which D-1 schools are looking at Blair? I've never seen Moran play I'll have to catch a game next season.

  59. ballboy

Just to chime my two cents in. I happen to like Coach Ricci very much and am sure that he puts as much time and commitment into this as everything else he does. I do believe that Moran is NOT playing this year. I am pretty sure that she did not even try out. The only Knights currently in the tryout process is Tancredi from Beacon and Crittendon from Lourdes.

  60. bystander

Maybe Felix from hudson valley knights too. Moran did not come to try out.

  61. Basketball_Lover

Last night was the last of the try-outs, so who is on the team? Anyone know?

  62. The Poo Poo Bandit

    Check the Lady Knicks website…

  63. Joedirt

Hey did anyone hire that wacko from Haldane yet? I hear if he doesnt get a job this year he is going to be flipping burgers at the candlelight!

  64. Boo Boo

I hear the wacko from Haldane and the Poo Poo Bandit and Rich D. are in a padded cell all together with a computer. They are being observed by a team of doctors to make sure they all can coach again. If they all take their meds, they will be allowed out on weeksends to watch the NBA Finals. As for coaching a school must have a medical staff on duty and a computer to let the 3 headed monster coach again.

  65. Basketball_Lover

Poo Poo Bandit, no really I am serious. Do we have the names of the girls who made the team? Last I heard there were 17, 5 from last year came back so that is a no brainer, and they had at least 6 try-outs so who are these fabulous other 5 girls?

  66. The Poo Poo Bandit

The team observing the Haldane wackadoo is made up of the finest psychiatrists in not only the US but from around the world. There's Dr. Claude Barbet from Scandinavia, Jose Barbados from Argentina, Dr. Mookie Monkey from Monrovia and of course Dr. Dick Hertz from California. The team reports that he is sedated and is no longer seeking a coaching job but instead wishes to end third world hunger by having celebrities adopt all of the starving children around the world.

  67. bballfan

    Basketball lover

Kara Tancredi a highly versatile athletic forward from Beaconis one of those five. Congrats Tancredi a Lady Knight.

  68. The Poo Poo Bandit

Upon hearing that the Empire team was not made up exclusively of Lady Knicks, founder and spiritual advisor Reverend Luke Jeremiah Wright Vaccaro called for the formation of a blue ribbon panel into the blatant anti-Knicks bias he believes exists in HS athletics. Coach Ricci stated that he was stuck between a barack and a hard place and that he had no choice but to integrate the team. First Jackie Robinson and now Tancerdi, Whittaker and Felix. I am proud to be an American today!
