Hudson Valley scholastic wins gold

July
27

sophia.jpg By word from Jeff Gold in Binghamton, I have learned that the Hudson Valley girls won the gold medal, 69-62 in OT over Central. Hudson Valley trailed by one with 6.8 seconds left when Alaina Walker of Albertus Magnus hit a free throw to send the game into OT. HV then dominated the extra period.

Sophia Aleksandravicius of Holy Child (right) led the way with 16 points. It gave the green and gold its second gold medal in four years. The scholastic team last won gold in Poughkeepsie in 2005, and finished as the silver medalist to Western in each of the last two years.

UPDATE (3:10 P.M.) — Here’s a little more I heard from Jeff that I thought was important…Hudson Valley didn’t hold a real lead in the game until OT, when Maggie Blair of Briarcliff knocked down a 3 to put the green and gold up by two.

Also, although she was shy with the trigger on her shot, Jeff said Lourdes sophomore Teneka Whittaker played excellent defensively, harassing opposing ball handlers. Obviously (and we already knew this), Whittaker has a very bright future, as evident by her playing a key role on an ESG gold medalist so soon into her high school career.

Teneka whittaker is some ball player. Good luck to her in the future. This team played very well together and what great coaches. Also great defense from kara T. ALAINA WALKER what a nice young lady, team player best in section one hit the nail on the head…...

Want to congragulate all the girls and the fabulous coaches for a job well done. I was very dissapointed in the coverage from the poughkeepsie journal in todays and sundays paper. Sunday there was nothing and today a pic without even a name I believe it was the Tancredi girl. They gave us dutchess fans no story at all. I went and picked up your paper and what a great article it gave me goose bumps while reading it. Thank you for at least given our two dutchess girls Whitaker and Tancredi a mention.I guess from what I read they must of played one helluva a five minutes of ot. Congrats again to all

An update for HV ESG Basketball

The Open Team coached by Al Vianni and Manny Martinez won the Bronze Medal at SUNY Binghamton, Sunday morning 75 -73 in an exciting come from behind victory.

Josh, the article that was written for the scholastic team was not right. Half of the team was not mentioned once in the article, but porsha postell was? How in any way is that fair? She quit the team and that was the end of it. Each and every win during the games was beacuse of all 10 girls’ participation and effort in the game, which has nothing to do with postell. As a devout fan of the team and the game, I thought that was wrong.

It is funny how when things go well all the naysayers stay away!!! Congrats to The Gold Medal Hudson Valley Team and its Coaching Staff. JOB WELL DONE.

  7. bottom line

They had an awesome 10 who played like a team along with an awesome coaching staff. It brought them home the gold it just doesn’t get any better than that!!! Congrats Hudson Valley

  8. The Poo Poo Bandit

Way to go girls! Great job by Coaches Dan “Salad” Ricci, John “Buddha of the Hardwood” Reilly and Jerry “JV Coaches Know Nothing” Fioretti!

  9. Boo Boo

Congrats to THE HUDSON VALLEY GOLD MEDAL TEAM. Great team effort. You showed there is No “I” in team. Four different leading scores in four games. Great disipline by all the girls (Kara, Shannon, Sophia, Teneka, Alex, Alexandra O.J.
Gillian, Alaina, Maggie and Shelby). Also great leadership by the two captains Maggie and Shelby. The coaching staff did a fabulous job. Great Coaching!!! Once again it was a pleasure following the TEAM, Congrats and everyone in Hudson Valley region should be proud and thank these girls.
    THANK YOU!!!

  10. Objective

I didn’t get a chance to get up there, but I want to congratulate all the girls. Great job!! Maybe all the people who bashed the coaches and girls, and thought their kids should have made it, don’t know as much as they think they do. Congrats again to the girls and coaches!! Enjoy it!!

  11. Beacon1

KKKAAARRRA!!!way to go Tancredi and teamates making Beacon proud of you again and again!!Superb job coaches relish this well deserved medal.

  12. Baller

It was amazing how when there isnt one superstar or one person trying to claim the spotlight how well a team can play. Granted it would have been more interesting had other teams have had more participation from their very best (i.e. NYC) but that is not to denote the effort or play of these HV girls. THey played like a true team with not one person leading the way but yet the whole team. COngrats!!!

  13. porsha postell

porsha postells a great player imagine if she was actually on a good team like white plains or mount vernon she would be one of the top recruits in the country

  14. ha!

is anyone hear talking about porsha postell? no!

  15. bball

Porsha wouldnt be a top recruit in the country because of her attitude!!! No coach wants to coach a girl with such a poor attitude regardless of talent. And she is nothing like the best guards in the country, she is lacking, so relax with that statement. I second ha! too… No one is talking about her here! No one wants to hear about her she is disrespectful and shouldnt be given the time of day!

  16. HOW WE FORGET

porsha postell, she may be a great individual player but not a team player she does not make the players around her better. Plus what has she won great players win titles.

  17. interesting

I think the blame here lies with her parents or whoever is guiding her. She is only a kid someone else had to help her make the decisions she has made and let her make them.

  19. bball fan

Hey Josh, how about a new thread?? Pre season information?

  20. ballboy

    bballfan,
Great job I was just coming on here to suggest the same thing. Open Gyms are getting under way, if not already started, and there is a lot of excitement for this season. I think that Class A is going to be extremely competitive, either way it should be a lot of fun, looking forward to another year of the blog

  21. The Fan

Is anyone aware of any player movements. I also think class A is loaded with all the big ladies and Class AA is loaded with all the guards. Will Mt Vernon have team this year?

  22. draftboy

I agree…Josh its been months, let’s get it cranked!!
