Girls basketball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Adams is back at White Plains

adams.jpgA little news tonight: Sue Adams is back at White Plains.

Adams left in the spring after leading the Tigers to four straight Class AA championships. She hoped to spend more time with her family after juggling schedules to be with sons Ryan and Kyle and, last year, escaping when she could in-season to watch daughter Kim play at UPenn.

White Plains formed a committee to interview candidates and interviewed several beginning in September. The committee, which was led by legendary boys coach Spencer Mayfield and did not include Adams, decided it wasn’t satisfied with the candidates. Mayfield, in what he said was a “shot in the dark,” asked Adams if she would reconsider. “I didn’t think anybody would be better,” Mayfield told me.

Adams discussed the decision with her family before agreeing to return.

“I don’t think anybody ever wanted her to leave,” Mayfield said. “She did such a good job with the girls. She’s such a good role model.”

I’ll have more on this after I speak to Adams.

  1. Hmmm

Congratulations coach, basketball is such a great sport so I’m not surprised you and your family want to come back to drive WP women to their best, I think OLL is going to give you (and AA) a real hard time this year.

    Work hard & Good luck.

  2. BlueGael

Good to hear a quality coach is back in our area. Only good things happen for all the girls’ programs when the coaches are solid, seasoned, and about the girls and not themselves.

Hey Josh what have you heard about Ursuline, who’s coming in, I asked once before but didn’t hear anything about a new guard possibly coming in. Saw her once at an AAU tourney don’t know much about her but I can tell you she is a player.

  3. on vacation

great to hear that coach adams will be back. but the best bball in the hudson valley will not be in AA next year. the teams in A and B will be better and advance further into states than any AA team.

  4. Fall League

    Josh,

Any other news about the open coaching positions or coaching changes?

  5. FYI

Valhalla has a new coach, Rich Austin. He replaces Eric Brand. Valhalla returns every player from last years Class C Semifinal team. I haven’t heard if Brand is coaching anywhere else. I had heard he applied for the WP job. Good to hear that Coach Adams is back.

  6. Care Taker

Blue Gael, I think the player you are talking about has very good blood lines. It is Bob Hyland the ex-football star from the New York Giants (Also owner of The Sports Page) his daughter played for The Lady Knicks and had a very good year. She is a 5’9” shooting guard and I hear she is on Coach Wooters radar. She will be a frosh to keep our eye on!!!

  7. BlueGael

Care Taker, not it. She is a lightning point guard. She is not on the Knicks. I think it was Future Stars which is why I assumed she is at Ursuline. I have seen Hylands many times she is not a shooting guard…...more of a 3/4….............whole different level of player this girl is. Anyway thanks for the info.

  8. Pupdaddy

Blue Gael, the point guard’s name is Arianna. She plays up a year on the Future Stars U14 team and is very, very good. She is a one person press breaker.

  9. BlueGael

Pupdaddy I Didn’t get her name, so I am not sure. Sounds like you know her…......tell me more I am a big fan of Ursuline for years since my oldest attended, and since Chambers left they have been in need.
Where is she from? I saw what I saw but that was only one game. What’s the scoop??

  10. Eric Cartman

    Hey Mr Garrison,

What kind of medication do you give to a person who talks to themseves?

  11. Fan

Eric thats funny I was just thinking that. LOL

  12. Mr Garrison

Well Eric, I think we give him a dose of reality and say that the fresman he is referring to might be on the JV or the “B” team because there are 3 sophmores on the team already who are better then her.
But I did hear lots of good things about that Hyland girl. She has a good shot at making the team.
