Girls basketball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Blair picks Manhattan

October
24

Maggie Blair has decided to play ball at Manhattan. Ill have more on this later.

UPDATE: I talked to the Briarcliff star. She said her decision boiled down to Manhattan or Division III powers Amherst or Williams. Obviously, for Blair the decision came between two very different choices. One, going the scholarship route, but playing at a much higher level. Or two, going to a superior academic school with a high level of basketball, but playing at a smaller level.

Blair told me she chose Manhattan for the basketball, but also because she felt it met her academic needs as well. Her two interests are business and engineering, and she said Manhattan offers both concentrations.

Surprisingly, Blair became just the first local player to commit to Manhattan, Iona or Fordham since Jenna Franciosa, who joined the Jaspers two years ago (although she has stopped playing basketball since then). It’s odd those local schools don’t recruit more local players.

Across the River…No word yet. I’m working on it, though.

Congratulations to Maggie and the rest of these fabulous young ladies who have signed to play in college.

It seems that each year more and more of our female high school players from Section 1 are getting an opportunity to play at the next level. It is certainly a sign that they are dedicating themselves to a very high work standard. All of Section 1 should be proud.

Congratulations are also in order to their parents for facilitating their achievements and to the hard working coaches who constantly push these players to be the best that they can be.

I heard Porsha was leaning towards Penn State.

Sec I you are so right about the increase in the numbers, and good for them, good for the county. I remember not long ago an article about how our top players are not going to bigger schools and how they were choosing schools that had exceptional academic ratings over quality of athletic programs. NOT that their thinking had any flaws but the more girls go to bigger programs the more those schools will scout our county

But way to go Maggie! Congratulations and good for you
