Mount Vernon comes back, wins 53-50

January
29

Excellent game. Here are some quick details on the game…

Ursuline led basically the whole way. The Koalas went up 18-15 after one, and 32-29 at the half. Mount Vernon only led for a couple second-quarter possessions, but Nicole Robinson (above), who played well, tied the score on a 3-pointer 26-26 and Ursuline went ahead from there.

The game was close, but the Koalas were in control from 26-26 on. Mount Vernon tied it once 43-43 on a basket with 6:25 left by Tatiana Lewin, who, along with Carece Moore, kept the Knights in the game. But still, Ursuline went back ahead. Kelly Tracy made back-to-back hoops and Caroline Spillane made one of her own, giving the Koalas a 49-45 lead with less than three minutes to play.

With time dwindling, Mount Vernon got busy. The Knights were very active and they kept Ursuline from bringing the ball over halfcourt with any regularity by catching its guards in a zone trap just beyond halfcourt. It forced a few turnovers and MV completed the comeback. Shanyce Stewart (14 points, 16 rebounds) made a pair of free throws. Then, with 1:51 left, a struggling Taylor Palmer (driving, with me in the background) made her first field goal since she hit a 3 for the first basket of the game. Palmer then made another with 27.5 seconds left to put Mount Vernon ahead 51-49.

Palmer’s hoop was the winning basket. Shelby Sferra (12 points, nine rebounds) was fouled and went to the line with 5.6 seconds left. The gym exploded after she made the first, but Sferra missed the second. Stewart got the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws. The Koalas’ last ditch effort was a baseball pass that was intercepted by Moore at halfcourt.

Excellent game, the atmosphere made all the more captivating by the Ursuline gym, where a cheer of encouragement seems to rattle around the rafters for the good part of a quarter. It was very loud there, but just not quite the result the host was hoping for.

Other scores to follow…

Coming today…

January
29

Hey everyone. As you probably noticed earlier today, I’m back to work today. Obviously, there’s a lot of ground to cover this week and much less time to do it, so here’s what’s ahead on the blog…

Today:
— A recap of Ursuline-Mount Vernon
— Tonight’s VC Live (7:30 p.m.) with Porsha Postell
— A look at tonight’s scores, with play resuming after the exam break

Tomorrow:
— A few words on league standings as of now
— A recap of Nanuet-Briarcliff
— A look at a busy Friday of action

Saturday:
— The latest Top 10
— A recap of Mount Vernon-Lourdes
— A few nuggets from Saturday’s notebooks

Sunday:
— My pick for a Super Bowl that is about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 100. (Last year was a 122.)

One question before I head out to Ursuline: Is there anything you want to know about? Anything you’d like to hear my thoughts on?

Let me know and I will certainly consider it.

Postell to appear on VC Live tonight

January
29

Woodlands star Porsha Postell will join me tonight at 7:30 on the latest edition of VC Live. The Kentucky-bound senior will sit with me for 15 or 20 minutes and answer my questions and yours. To find us, log on to LoHud.com/VCLive at 7:30. You can post your questions there. As always, we want as many contributions as possible from you, so please send them over.

Porsha and I will touch on a bunch of topics, including:
— Woodlands’ second-half resurgence
— Are the Falcons now as much of a threat as they were last year?
— How has she adjusted to playing with a less experienced supporting cast?
— Why she chose Kentucky and what she expects when she gets there?

I’ll also touch on a bunch of other items. I’ll give a few quick thoughts on Mount Vernon and Ursuline, which I will cover this afternoon at 4:30, and I’ll try to gauge where the Knights stand heading into Saturday’s big game against Lourdes. I’ll give a quick preview on tomorrow’s Nanuet-Briarcliff game. And, if time allows, I’ll take a look ahead to next week.

Glad to be back folks. I hope you join us at 7:30.

Also today in The  Journal News and on LoHud.com, Kevin Devaney Jr. has more on efforts to try to revive Championship Week at the County Center. “Here’s the link.”:http://lohud.com/article/20090127/SPORTS02/901270361/1110 Be sure to weigh in with your thoughts.

And don’t forget to mark your calendars — and your browser bookmarks — for Thursday at 7:30 with the link “www.lohud.com/vclive.”:http://lohud.com/vclive That’s when Josh will be back with another live chat on girls hoops.

Player of the week, Jan. 26

January
26

PLAYER OF THE WEEK — Emily Tapio, Brewster: The sophomore has played exceedingly well under a little added pressure. With her point guard out for the year, Tapio has still thrived. She had 26 points in a win over Fox Lane on Wednesday. She then had 18 in a 42-41 win over Somers, including the winning basket with 1.7 seconds to play. Finally, on Saturday, Tapio had a triple-double (16 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) in the Bears’ 57-37 win over Poughkeepsie on Saturday.

Runners-up: Danielle Fiacco, North Salem; Taylor Wilson, Pearl River; Mary Gray, Nyack; Aysha Williams, New Rochelle; Maggie Blair, Briarcliff.

Note: This post was written in advance. I will be out of the office on Jan. 26 and 27. If you have questions, concerns or corrections, please e-mail them to local sports editor Joe Lombardi at jlombard@lohud.com. I will return on Jan. 28.

Games of the week/predictions, Jan. 26-Feb. 1

January
26

There are only eight games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday combined but it’s a decent group. The action will pick up more over the weekend.

MONDAY —
Scarsdale at Carmel, 6 p.m.:
This one will be interesting. Luke Vaccaro has told me in the past that his team “doesn’t handle bus rides,” and this isn’t exactly a short bus ride. The Raiders will try to slow down Carmel’s uptempo game. I bet they do enough of it to win. Scarsdale 54, Carmel 47
Yorktown at Lakeland, 4 p.m.:
The expected return of Tori Jarosz comes against a dangerous Yorktown team. The Hornets will need to bring Jarosz back slowly so she can return to basketball shape, but the ‘Huskers are good enough to make them pay for too much tinkering. I like Lakeland, but it will be very close. Lakeland 57, Yorktown 53

TUESDAY —
Ardsley at Edgemont, 6 p.m.:
Edgemont had been rolling but found itself tripped up recently by Rye and, later, by Ardsley, which has played well of late. This game could be Edgemont’s season. Obviously, it’s not like the Panthers aren’t playoff bound, but they need to regain some confidence. Ardsley 60, Edgemont 54

THURSDAY —
Mount Vernon at Ursuline, 4:15 p.m.:
This had co-game-of-the-week status until Ursuline lost some of its steam last week. The Koalas thought they could’ve done better against Mount Vernon last time. Now’s their chance. I suspect they will. Mount Vernon 66, Ursuline 61
White Plains at Mamaroneck, 6 p.m.:
Here are two younger, hungry teams. Mamaroneck has already qualified for the playoffs, but wouldn’t it love to sweep White Plains after enduring what it has had to endure in recent years? This is a close call that could go either way. Rest assured, it will be low scoring. White Plains 46, Mamaroneck 45 (OT)
North Rockland at Ramapo, 6 p.m.: The Red Raiders go for the season sweep and are aiming to continue their recent semi-surge. This will be a meaningful game for both teams. For North Rockland, the playoffs are not completely out of the question. North Rockland 49, Ramapo 42

FRIDAY —
Spring Valley at Nyack, 4:30 p.m.:
I think Nyack has established itself as the team to beat in League 2-South but it still has a loooong way to go before locking it up. This first-of-two with Spring Valley could be wild. The Indians must corral the backcourt of Jasmine Gibson and Shakira Dumas. Nyack 57, Spring Valley 50
Briarcliff at Nanuet, 4:30 p.m.:
The game of the week! A potential preview of the Class B final? It may be that, too. Briarcliff clearly secured its status as the section’s best team, but it won’t be a picnic going into to Nanuet and trying to win. One advantage I believe the Bears have that can’t be understated is that they play Rye (Tuesday) and Croton (Wednesday), and it should have them in good form. I’d worry just a little about Nanuet’s long layoff. Either way, chances are this will establish the storyline for the Class B playoffs. A) Briarcliff is the unquestioned favorite, or B) Briarcliff has work to do to retain its gold ball. Briarcliff 64, Nanuet 57
Brewster at Tappan Zee, 5 p.m.:
I would like Brewster’s chance at full strength, but the Bears definitely enter the game as underdogs without Devon Quattrocchi. I expect TZee to win, but will it be close? I think me (and some of you) consider the Rockland teams the three or four best come playoff time in Class A. After this game we will know whether or not that’s true. If Brewster can win or keep it very competitive, that will make us think differently about the A contenders of the north (Brewster, Lakeland, Peekskill, etc.). Tappan Zee 61, Brewster 50

SATURDAY —
Our Lady of Lourdes at Mount Vernon, 12 p.m.:
The Class AA final? Could be. Lourdes has played exceedingly well of late. Mount Vernon has stormed through the season, but the last couple weeks have been less kind. There are several questions to be answered here: A) Who has more depth? B) Does MV have an advantage inside? If so, how great? C) Are Sade King and Taylor Palmer able to handle Lourdes’ talented duo? Can they more than handle them? D) Is one of these teams significantly better than the other? I, for one, can’t answer any of the four yet. That makes this the game of the week, part 2. Lourdes 71, Mount Vernon 68

SUNDAY —
Pearl River at Albertus Magnus, 1:30 p.m.:
The schedulers tagged this makeup game to Super Bowl Sunday. I could roll out the football cliches, but I’ll pass. Let’s just say they all apply. I’d imagine Magnus is out for revenge and out to reestablish itself as the queens of the Class A mix. If the Falcons want that mantle, they better do a better job crashing the boards and defending the 3. Pearl River scorched them in both areas last Friday night. I’m wavering here, but I’d take Magnus by hair. Albertus Magnus 54, Pearl River 52

Carmel extends its win streak against Mahopac

January
25

Because of scheduling reasons, I wasn’t able to cover yesterday’s game between Carmel and Mahopac. Instead, you were treated to a cameo by our award-winning golf writer Sam Weinman, whose sorry-sack Wildcats of UNH were soundly whipped last night by the mighty Terriers of Boston University to complete a weekend sweep.

But enough about hockey. Carmel deserves the love.

The Rams recovered from an 11-point first-quarter deficit and a six-point gap at the half to beat Mahopac 59-51. They have now won every head-to-head meeting the last four-plus seasons, a streak I find particularly odd considering how evenly matched the two have appeared to be the last few years.

Anyway, the very underrated Marie Mullen (right) led Carmel with 21 points. Brittany Horne overcame pains in her side that befell her in the first half to score 19.

Mahopac received another big game from Gillian Felix, who had 23 points and started strong. Felix led the Indians out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter but the Rams made up the deficit and then some.

As you all know, these rivals had their previous game postponed during the first quarter because the court was unsafe. Sam reported in today’s paper that the conditions deteriorated because fans tracked wet snow in on their shoes and boots and the court became unplayable. That game will resume on Feb. 9 in what will mark the final regular-season game for both squads. But what I find most interesting is that it will pick up where it left off, with Mahopac ahead 10-2.

I guess you learn something every day. I don’t ever remember a game resuming after it had started like this. In fact, I had no idea what the rule was until now. Go figure.
