Game thread: Class B championship, No. 2 Irvington (19-3) vs. No. 5 Nanuet (16-6)

February
28

The game will start in about 30-35 minutes. This will be the third time they’ve met this season. Irvington won both meetings and has won four of five the last two seasons.

So who does everyone think will win?

Remember you can watch the game on Mogulus here.

Here are the starters:

IRVINGTON

#13 Riley Harrington, G

#10 Lisa Bucci, G

#4 Marley Giddens, F

#14 Tara Gabelman, F

#20 Gillian Morley, C

NANUET

#21 Lauren Kahn, G

#15 Christine Brezovsky, G

#24 Nikki Saponaro, G/F

#25 K.C. Jentzen, F

#34 Amy Delva, C

5:14 first quarter: Irvington 4-2 — Nanuet just called a 30-second TO. Hang tight. We’re working on the Mogulus connection.

End of the first: Nanuet 19, Irvington 12 — Lauren Kahn has six points and two assists. Tara Gabelman has six points and two rebounds.

4:21 left in the second quarter: Nanuet 21, Irvington 16 — Irvington just called a timeout. Tara Gabelman just scored a couple baskets and now has 10 points, but Nanuet has shut down all the Bulldogs’ other options. K.C. Jentzen has eight points and five rebounds.

2:32 left in the second quarter: Nanuet 23, Irvington 21 — Timeout Nanuet. Riley Harrington tied it on a 3-pointer but Lauren Kahn just found Amy Delva to put Nanuet back up.

HALFTIME: Nanuet 25, Irvington 22 — Very fast-paced half but a ton of turnovers. It’s seems like every other play is a travel. Still, the teams are very closely matched. Gabelman has 10 points but has been whistled for two fouls. Irvington continues to search for a second option. Marley Giddens is the next leading scorer with five points. For Nanuet, the scoring has been much more balanced. Jentzen has eight points and six boards. Kahn has six points and four assists. Amy Delva has been a nice surprise. She has six points despite playing much of the half with two fouls.

2:21 left in the third quarter: Nanuet 31, Irvington 29 — Tara Gabelman picked up her third and fourth fouls in three seconds two minutes into the third quarter. I thought the Bulldogs, who trailed by four at the time, may be toast. But freshman Marley Giddens has kept them in it. She has four points and has already picked off six steals in the game. Lisa Bucci also answered a long 3 by Christine Brezovsky with one of her own.

End of the third quarter: Nanuet 33, Irvington 29 — It’ll be interesting to see whether Gina Maher goes back with Tara Gabelman with four fouls. She hasn’t done it yet, but it’s getting late.

5:08 left in the fourth quarter: Nanuet 43, Irvington 33 — 10-4 Nanuet here in the fourth. Jentzen had two quick baskets before she left with four fouls. Gabelman is back in but Irvington is still fading.

4:05 left: Nanuet 44, Irvington 36 — Tara Gabelman just fouled out. She was whistled for an over the back call. This game has become littered with whistles. Amy Delva just fouled too. It’s a foulfest.

2:29 left: Nanuet 46, Irvington 37 — It’s getting late to be down nine points. Nanuet has the ball as well.

FINAL: Nanuet 55, Irvington 44 — Nanuet wins its first gold ball since 2006. You really have to give them in inordinate amount of credit. The Golden Knights beat Briarcliff and Irvington, the top two seeds. Also, no more griping in Nanuet about Carlos Fidalgo. Was he ever the right man for the job? Fidalgo beat two teams he went 0-3 against during the regular season.

K.C. Jentzen finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Kahn scored 10 points, but was a terror on defense. She had 10 points, five assists and four steals.

MVP award was given to Avery Zuvic.

END OF 3rd Qtr: Haldane 39, Hamilton 37 – Really close game here at the County Center…should come down to the wire…Shereen Lightbourne has 15 points, dictating play of both ends of the court… Milner has 10 points. Victoria Desmarais has 7 points , hitting a couple of key jumpers…Ashanti Kennedy has given Hamilton a lift with seven points. Milner has four fouls, could be an issue late in the game…

HALFTIME: Hamilton 27, Haldane 25- Shereen Lightbourne has 13 points, moving effectively on her ankle. Liz Milner has been Haldane’s top scorer, with some effective low post moves and and-1’s, She has nine points. The Blue Devils are in serious foul trouble, 11 first half fouls.

Haldane is in foul trouble they have 6 team fouls…
—————————————————————-

The game will get underway in about an hour, but I just wanted to set the stage.

The teams met once this season, on Dec. 23, and Hamilton won 56-35 at Haldane, going up big in the first quarter 21-2.

One thing to watch obviously is Shereen Lightbourne and how she fares on her balky ankle. The Hamilton senior is the best player on the court when healthy, but how healthy is she?

Anyway, Matt Ng will blog during the game. You can listen to me call the action on Mogulus at www.LoHud.com/vcsports1.

Here are the starters:

HAMILTON

#3 Ashley Morris, G

#12 Shereen Lightbourne, G

#4 Allison Janos, G

#15 Maia Hood, F

#20 Ashanti Kennedy, F

HALDANE

#31 Liz Milner, G

#20 Kristen DesMarais, G

#32 Victoria DesMarais, G

#44 Holly Whiston, F

#33 Avery Zuvic, F

Role reversal in Fairchester title game

February
28

Ten days after it lost there to end the regular season, Holy Child rebounded to beat top-seeded RCDS and win the FAA tournament 46-41 yesterday.

My colleague Casey Tolfree was on hand for a comeback performance by the Gryphons and their star. Sophia Aleksandravicius did it all, piling up 30 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks. Teammates Maggie Kelly stuffed the stat sheet, too, with six rebounds, six assists and six steals.

You can read Casey’s story here. She said Holy Child came out in a box and one on Alexandra Osborn-Jones and it helped it build a 16-5 lead. Carolyn Binder and Veronica Roman (25 combined points) were among those who tried to pick up the slack.

For more on the game, please check out the story. The FAA title is a significant win for Holy Child, which had been in strong position but fallen short previously during Aleksandravicius’ career.

Game thread: Class A semifinals, No. 2 Albertus Magnus (20-2) vs. No. 3 Brewster (16-5)

February
27

They did not meet during the regular season.

You can watch the game live on Mogulus here.

Here are the starters…

ALBERTUS MAGNUS

#34 Felicia DaCruz, G

#10 Maura Power, G

#22 Alaina Walker, G/F

#35 Kerry Higgins, F

#40 Theresa Miller,C

BREWSTER
Liz Minella, G, #34
Lauren Quattrocchi, G, #24
Marisa Delzio, G, #15
Vania Simpri, F, #32
Emily Tapio, F, #11

End of the 1st quarter: Albertus Magnus 18, Brewster 6 — Magnus has shown all its strength and experience here early, scoring 12 points and forcing two TO before the Bears scored a basket. Alaina Walker has eight points and two blocks in the quarter. She’s also guarding Emily Tapio, Brewster’s leading scorer, who is 0 for 4 so far. Marisa Delzio has kept Brewster in it by making a pair of 3’s. Fellow freshman guard Lauren Quattrocchi is on the bench, however, with three fouls. Theresa Miller has been a presence inside for the Falcons. She has four points, two rebounds and a block.

5:32 left in the 2nd quarter: Albertus Magnus 21, Brewster 8 — Brewster seems to have settled down. The Bears are playing the game now and have gotten off some decent shots. A couple were blocked by Miller. A few others have been missed. If they can make some opne shots, they can get back in it.

3:27 left in the 2nd quarter: Albertus Magnus 26, Brewster 12 — Liz Minella just hit back to back hoops off feeds by Delzio to for a Magnus timeout. Delzio has really played well. She has six points and a couple assists and seems to be capable of sticking with Felicia DaCruz on D.

HALFTIME: Albertus Magnus 32, Brewster 15 — Alaina Walker has 11 points and two blocks. Theresa Miller has six points, five rebounds and four blocks. Marisa Delzio has seven points for Brewster.

End of the 3rd quarter — Albertus Magnus 48, Brewster 22 — Looks like Magnus will empty its bench after a late 13-2 to close the quarter. Walker now has 21 points. Power hit another 3 during the period, as did DaCruz.

FINAL: Albertus Magnus 57, Brewster 38 — Alaina Walker scored 21 points and Maura Power added 12, all of them on 3’s. Magnus played the entire fourth quarter with four starters on the bench. The only one who played was Kerry Higgins.

Emily Tapio led Brewster with 17 points, 10 of which came in the fourth.

Magnus will meet Lakeland at 5:15 on Sunday in what should be a heckuva final.

Game thread: Class AA semifinals, No. 2 Mount Vernon (19-3) vs. No. 3 Scarsdale (17-5)

February
27

They met twice during the regular season. Both games were won by Mount Vernon.

You can watch the game live on Mogulus here.

Here are the starters…

MOUNT VERNON

#11 Sade King, G

#4 Taylor Palmer, G

#12 Carece Moore, G/F

#21 Shanyce Stewart, F

#35 Lubirdia Gordon, C

SCARSDALE

#12 Danielle Feigin, G

#22 Allison Gage, G

#23 Chelsea LoBue, F

#15 Kerry Ryan, F

#24 Hayley Kanner, C

End of the 1st quarter: Mount Vernon 16, Scarsdale 4 — Great quarter for the Knights. They have had balanced scoring. In fact, the only starter without a hoop is leading scorer Taylor Palmer, who has attempted just one shot. Scarsdale will need more out of Chelsea LoBue, who is 1 for 6. Lubirdia Gordon got off to a good start but she’s on the bench with two fouls.

HALFTIME: Mount Vernon 21, Scarsdale 13 — The Knights led 20-4 midway through the second quarter but Scarsdale outscored them 9-1 to end the half. Chelsea LoBue hit back to back baskets during the stretch and has six points to lead the Raiders. Danielle Feigin also hit a nice driving layup with 27 seconds left in the half to cut it to single digits.

Mount Vernon has a little bit of foul trouble. Both its starting forwards, Shanyce Stewart and Lubirdia Gordon, have two fouls. Taylor Palmer, MV’s leading scorer, has gone without a point in the first half and hasn’t been involved much in the action. She’ll have to get going in the second half. Stewart has seven rebounds for the Knights, who were led by seven points from Carece Moore.

End of the 3rd quarter: Mount Vernon 30, Scarsdale 23 — Shanyce Stewart had five points in the quarter, including two baskets that gave MV a little more cushion after Scarsdale cut the lead to five points. Scarsdale seems content to let everyone else beat them but Taylor Palmer, who finally scored her first basket in the third. Allison Gage has done an excellent job defending her. The defense just collapses in the paint anytime Palmer drives.

FINAL: Mount Vernon 45, Scarsdale 33 — Mount Vernon will meet No. 4 Ossining on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the gold ball. It is a rematch of the 2004 final, which was won by Ossining after Mount Vernon built a 16-point halftime lead. That history alone will make the game worth watching. It’s also impossible to call. The Knights are young and talented, but how will they withstand Ossining’s pressure?

As for this game, Mount Vernon was led by Shanyce Stewart, who had 19 points and 14 rebounds. She scored eight points in a row in the fourth quarter after Scarsdale took its first and only lead on a 15-foot pullup by Danielle Feigin, who finished with eight points and three assists. After Feigin put Scarsdale ahead 31-30 with 4:37 to go, Mount Vernon finished on a 15-2 run. Stewart had those eight straight points and MV shot great at the line in the fourth quarter. The Knights were 9 of 12 in the fourth alone.

Contest question #6

February
27

OK, you know the rules and regulations, so…

Question #6: How many timeouts (30-second TO and fulls) does each team get per game?

The person who answers the question correctly first wins.

Game thread: Class A semifinals, No. 1 Lakeland (16-3) vs. No. 5 Pearl River (17-5)

February
26

The teams did not meet during the regular season. The winner this afternoon will meet the winner of tomorrow’s game between Albertus Magnus and Brewster at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday for the Class A gold ball.

For those of you who couldn’t make it to the County Center, you can watch the game here on Mogulus.

Here are the starters:

LAKELAND
Emily Alicea, G, #33
Kristin Pappalardo, G, #3
Vicki Kowalski, G, #14
Kerry Johnson, F, #21
Tori Jarosz, C, #44

PEARL RIVER
Kelly Mulligan, G, #23
Christa Scognamiglio, G, #24
Tara Clinton, G, #13
Taylor Wilson, F, #44
Kerry Sullivan, F, #21

End of the 1st quarter: Lakeland 22, Pearl River 8 — Folks, if you’re not watching it you’ve missed Lakeland play just about the single best quarter I’ve seen all season. Tori Jarosz has been dominant. She has eight points, three rebounds and two blocks, along with a few other altered shots. She has opened up the perimeter. Pearl River has left Vicky Kowalski all alone and she has made the Pirates pay. She has 10 points, including six on 3’s. All four of her baskets are jumpers.

HALFTIME: Lakeland 44, Pearl River 26 — Terrific first half for Lakeland, which is not only big but is much more agile than you’d expect. The Hornets did a good job against Pearl River’s press except for a few minutes. They actually led 36-12 before an 11-0 run by the Pirates. Emily Alicea calmed things down by making 5 of 6 free throws. Jarosz has 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks so far. Vicky Kowalski has 10 points and Kristin Pappalardo has eight. She picked up her second foul and has sat most of the second quarter. For Pearl River, Taylor Wilson, who always plays so hard, has battled through the frustration of playing against Jarosz. She has nine points and Kelly Mulligan has seven.

End of the 3rd quarter: Lakeland 60, Pearl River 40

FINAL: Lakeland 71, Pearl River 50 — Tori Jarosz finished with 33 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocks. Lakeland will meet either Brewster or Magnus at 5:15 on Sunday for the gold ball.
