Game thread: Class B state Federation semis, Nanuet vs. Mount Mercy (CHSAA)

11:36 a.m.: Nanuet will take on Mount Mercy from Glens Falls Civic Center in a few. Hang tight and I’ll have the (semi) blow-by-blow.
11:58 a.m.: Sorry for no updates yet but the game hasn’t started. The Long Island Lutheran game ran long. The independent-schools champ advanced past Lafayette and into tomorrow’s 10:30 a.m. final. It awaits the winner of Nanuet-Mount Mercy, which should begin in five minutes.
12:07 p.m.: The game is finally underway, about 22 minutes late.
12:12 p.m.: 6-5 Mount Mercy, 4:38 left in the first.
12:17 p.m.: 7-6 Nanuet leads with 2:50 left. Kind of a blah game so far. Not a lot of intensity. I think the players are still trying to get the blood flowing.
12:19 p.m.: …and just as I say that it’s been kind of dull, Nanuet gets things going. The Golden Knights just went on a 6-0 run to force a timeout. K.C. Jentzen scored on a nice feed by Ryan Mulligan. Christine Brezovsky hit a short runner. And Lauren Kahn followed with a steal and a layup. … Nanuet has already forced seven turnovers.
12:23 p.m.: Nanuet leads 13-6 after one quarter. Brezovsky has five points and Jentzen has four points. The Golden Knights also have forced nine turnovers.
12:33 p.m.: Nanuet leads 20-10 with under three minutes left in the half. There have been very few stoppages so far. The refs are letting them play.
12:39 p.m.: Nanuet leads 24-15 at the half. Mount Mercy actually handled the ball much better in the second quarter. I only had the Magic for one turnover in the entire quarter. That indicates to me that it could come back in the game. Nanuet hasn’t scored a ton of points in the half court.
Christine Brezovsky leads Nanuet with seven points. Jentzen has six. Saponaro has four points. Mount Mercy’s 6-footer, Meg Recktenwalk, who I mentioned earlier this week, has six points at the half. Leading scorer Melissa Graham was kept quiet by Lauren Kahn. She scored four points on two hoops in a one-minute span in the second quarter.
12:47 p.m.: HALFTIME STATS —
Nanuet: 9-24 FG (38%); 1-3 3FG; 3-6 FT; 15 RB (2 off); 4 Ass; 7 Stl; 6 TO
Mount Mercy: 7-19 FG (37%); 0-4 3FG; 1-4 FT; 18 RB (4 off); 2 Ass; 2 stl; 11 TO
1 p.m.: Nanuet leads 31-21 late in the third quarter.
1:03 p.m.: Nanuet leads 35-21 after three quarters. Jentzen just strung together six straight points to end the half and now has12 for the game to lead all scorers. Recktenwald has 10 to lead Mount Mercy. Brezovsky also has 10 for Nanuet. … Carlos Fidalgo has been able to rest a lot of players in this one, which should keep them fresh for tomorrow. Ten players have played for Nanuet. Senior Kiera Dooley, who has bravely battled a shoulder injury this season, came off the bench in the second quarter and scored on a nice post move.
1:10 p.m.: Fidalgo just called a timeout after Mount Mercy scored and cut it to 37-28 with six minutes left.
1:13 p.m.: Hmmm. Nanuet has let Mount Mercy back in the game. Graham just scored to cut it to 37-32. Nanuet then turned the ball over on the inbound, giving the Magic the ball down five with 4:13 to play.
1:19 p.m.: Timeout Mount Mercy. Tied 37-37 with 2:16 to play. Nanuet is in the midst of a collapse, to put it bluntly. The Golden Knights led 37-24 after a basket by Ryan Mulligan early in the fourth quarter. They have since been outscored 13-0. Mount Mercy tied it on a pair of and-1’s. The second one wasn’t completed, although Graham got the rebound and had a put back to give her team the lead.
1:22 p.m.: Nanuet went ahead 40-37 on a 3 by Brezovsky. Mount Mercy tied it on a three-point play by Emily Williams. Nanuet went back ahead on a hoop by Jentzen. Saponaro just added two free throws and Brezovsky added a hoop (off a Saponaro steal) to make it 46-40 Golden Knights. Looks like they will survive. Not pretty, but they will survive.
1:25 p.m.: Graham scored. Nanuet leads by four and has the ball.
1:30 p.m.: Jentzen is at the line, up five, with 2.7 seconds left.
1:31 p.m.: Nanuet wins 50-45. It will meet Long Island Lutheran (NYSAISAA) at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow for the Class B state Federation championship.
Brezovsky led the Golden Knights with 15 points. Jentzen had 14. Both had big points in the final 2:03 after Mount Mercy tied it 37-37 on a bucket with 2:43 to play.
2:06 p.m.: FINAL STATS —
