Girls basketball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Newark/Federation gripes/Long Island Lutheran

March

A few quick updates/thoughts from the Glens Falls Civic Center…

1. Newark lost to Kellenberg, 49-42. Put simply, not a spirited effort by Newark. The Bears led by 10 at halftime but fell apart so quickly that they actually trailed 42-32 late in the game until a late run. Alyssa Fenyn and Shakista Woolfolk, who killed Magnus last Saturday, combined to shoot 11 for 37 from the field and scored 28 points.

2. The Federation is…ehhh… The Newark game only solidified what I have thought about this tournament forever and what came into focus during Nanuet’s lackluster fourth quarter. This is such a tough tournament to play in. Teams have no clue about their opponents. For girls, the games are very early in the morning. The arena is basically empty. It’s so cold in here (because it’s a hockey rink) that I brought a sweater to put on when I got INSIDE the building. And if that’s not bad enough, it’s coldest on the floor. My toes are colder as I write this than they are when I go for a walk in the snow. And yes I’m serious.

You take all those factors into account — and consider that teams are a week removed from the biggest achievement of the players’ high school careers — and it amounts to an anti-climatic weekend. (And if you think I’m kidding about the cold, a player on Brooklyn College Academy just wore a windbreaker that is not part of the uniform during warmups.)

3. Long Island Lutheran is good. Nanuet will have itself a tough game tomorrow morning. Long Island Lutheran has three players 5-foot-10 or taller, two of whom had double-doubles in today’s other semifinal. The Crusaders also feature an eighth grader Taylor Brown, who hit for 19 points and had three assists. With Brown, the 6-foot Alli Herschlein (14 points, 10 rebounds), the 5-foot-10 Samantha Milhaven (17 points, 11 rebounds) and point guard Blue Sanders (who showed she was a threat with six assists), Long Island Lutheran has a lot of players to defend.

Federation games should be moved to NYC. Glens Falls is a nice town but these games should be highlighted more.
