Game thread: Class B state Federation final, Nanuet vs. Long Island Lutheran

March
28

The game will get underway in 15 minutes. Hang tight for updates on the action.

10:38 a.m.: Long Island Lutheran is out in front 7-5 six minutes into the game. K.C. Jentzen has all the points for Nanuet.

10:41 a.m.: Good finish to the quarter for both teams. Long Island Lutheran went ahead 9-5 on a jumper by Blue Sanders, but Nanuet answered back with a 3-pointer by Christine Brezovsky. The Golden Knights went back ahead on a 17-footer from straightaway by Jentzen, who has had a terrific quarter. The Crusaders then went back up on the final possession when Samantha Plunkett nailed a 3 from the right wing.

Right now, after one, the score is 12-10 Long Island Lutheran. Jentzen has seven points.

10:45 a.m.: A basket by Lauren Kahn and a basket by Amy Delva (from Kahn) gives Nanuet a 14-12 lead. Kahn then rebounded an airballed 3 by Jentzen and put it back in, forcing an LI Lutheran timeout with 5:46 left in the first half.

Nanuet leads 16-12. It could use Kahn to get going. She has been such an igniter in the postseason but wasn’t at her best yesterday.

10:52 a.m.: Nanuet leads 25-21 with two minutes left. Big 3 before by Christina Fitzgerald.

10:55 a.m.: Nanuet up 27-21 with 37.1 seconds left. Blue Sanders just picked up her second foul and Ryan Mulligan is at the line, shooting 1 and 1.

10:59 a.m.: Nanuet is ahead 28-23 at halftime. Mulligan hit one of two free throws, but Sanders came down and drew Kahn’s second foul on a drive to the basket. Sanders made both free throws.

Jentzen leads Nanuet with 11 points. She also has a ton of rebounds. I’ll get you that total in a bit. Kahn has eight points, scoring all of them in the second quarter. Fitzgerald and Brezovsky each have three points on a 3.

Blue Sanders has four points. Paige Kriftcher leads LI Lutheran with seven points. Taylor Brown, the eighth grader who led her team with 19 points yesterday, has yet to score today.

Halftime stats in a bit…

11:07 a.m.: HALFTIME STATS —
Nanuet:
28 points; 9-21 FG (43%); 2-6 3FG; 4-8 FT; 17 RB (7 off); 4 A; 4 Stl; 8 TO
Jentzen 11 points, 9 rebounds
LI Lutheran: 23 points; 7-12 FG (58%); 2-9 3FG; 3-3 FT; 9 RB (2off); 6 A; 1 Stl; 9 TO
Kriftcher 7 points
Milhaven 4 rebounds

11:13 a.m.: Kahn made a 3 a couple minutes ago. It was her first in almost three games. Nanuet leads by six, 33-27 with about four minutes to play in the quarter.

11:16 a.m.: Nanuet is in good position at the moment. It leads 35-27 with 3:41 left and has the ball. Sanders just traveled on a drive to the basket. … For Nanuet, Jentzen just hit a pair of free throws after a basket by Sanders had cut it to six points.

11:22 a.m.: 44-33 Nanuet leads with 50.6 seconds left in the third quarter and Sanders at the line. Nanuet pulled ahead by 13 on a 3 by Nikki Saponaro, who sat toward the end of the first half with foul trouble. Saponaro hit the shot from the left corner, off a feed from Kahn.

11:24 a.m.: Well Nanuet fans, your team is one decent quarter away from a Federation championship. The Golden Knights lead 48-34 after three quarters. A free throw by Sanders cut it to 10, but Jentzen scored back to back hoops to push her team’s lead to 14 points. The second was a nice drive with the clock running down. She beat her defender off the dribble and banked in a layup just before the buzzer. Jentzen has been unstoppable with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

11:28 a.m.: Timeout LI Lutheran. Nanuet leads 50-36. The Golden Knights just got a hoop from Amy Delva, who has played a very good second half. She has six of her eight points since halftime.

11:30 a.m.: Timeout Nanuet. It leads 50-41, but Carlos Fidalgo didn’t like what he saw there as Brown hit a 3 and Samantha Milhaven hit a layup to cut it to nine.

11:32 a.m.: Kahn just picked up her third foul. It’d be something to watch for if she was whistled for No. 4. LI Lutheran is starting to pressure the ball and Nanuet could ill-afford to be without its point guard. It’s now a seven-point game.

11:35 a.m.: Nanuet up 53-43 with 3:46 left. Jentzen just calmed some of the panic with a putback of a missed 3 by Kahn.

11:40 a.m.: Nanuet is up 57-45 with 1:36 left. Jentzen has 21 points and 15 rebounds. She is a sure bet to win the MVP. This will be her third game in the last five of at least 15 points and 15 rebounds.

11:44 a.m.: Both teams have cleared their benches. Nanuet leads 60-45.

11:46 a.m.: Nanuet wins. Final score: 60-45. This is the third Federation championship by a Rockland team. Of course, it’s the first ever by a public school. The only other Rockland girls team to win the Federation was Albertus Magnus, which won back to back in 1991 and 1992.

More stats later…another Federation crown for Section 1.
