Palmer commits to West Virginia

June
3

Another member of the junior class has given an early commitment. This time it’s Mount Vernon guard Taylor Palmer, who, after a weekend visit to Morgantown, gave her verbal to play for West Virginia.

Palmer, who led Mount Vernon in scoring at 16.2 PPG and helped the Knights win their first Section 1 title in 26 years, said she had five other finalists — BC, Seton Hall, Iona, Providence and Princeton — but she was so floored by WVU that she passed on the other choices.

“I was just going to wait until the end of the summer to make a decision, but I went to West Virginia and it was the perfect fit,” Palmer said.

The Mountaineers first scouted Palmer during the high school season at the Kennedy showcase in the Bronx. They followed her at an AAU tournament in Virginia in April, when she played for the New York Gauchos. Palmer was impressed when the coaching staff told her that she was their No. 1 target. The scholarship offer backed that up, and Palmer accepted.

“I was going to wait, but they told me I was their No. 1 pick,” she said. “And besides basketball, the coach is very interested into his athletes getting a degree. I want to do something more than basketball when I’m done with college. I want to work toward a career in something else. So that was really important to me.”

The coaching staff asked WVU freshman Kevin Jones about Palmer a couple months back. He also met Palmer during her visit. Those two and other members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams toured the campus and town, and Palmer developed a comfort level there.

“They support all the teams there, the football team, the boys basketball team, the girls basketball,” she said. “That made me like it even more. It’s a full college environment.”

Just saw this from the San Jose Mercury News:

Sports in brief: Cal women’s basketball loses three players

    Mercury News Wire Services

“Cal women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle confirmed that three players have left the program. Kelsey Adrian, Casey Morris and Angelei Aguirre have all decided to play elsewhere.

Losing Adrian and Morris is a big blow because the two were expected to provide much-needed experience. Adrian, a 6-foot-1 forward, played two seasons with the Bears. She averaged 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game her freshman season, but saw her numbers decline this past season. Morris saw action in all 34 games during her freshman season and averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 16.8 minutes.

Aguirre came to Cal as a recruited walk-on and saw limited playing time.”

Anyone know where she is going? Also surprising that she was a “recruited walk-on” which means no scholarship. With all of the hoopla, I would have thought she had a full ride.

  2. Scholarship Question

I thought that every Division I player in Bball who was recruited was on scholarship whether it be major Div 1 or any Div 1? Are a lot kids playing Div 1 not on scholarship, such as Aguirre?

There is a limit on the number of scholarships that a team can have outstanding at any one time (maybe 13?). There is nothing that stops a school from having additional non-scholarship walk-ons.

  4. Scholarship Question

    Thank You

I checked Cals roster they only had eleven players including Aguirre, so why was she a walk-on.

Maybe girls sitting out with an injury? Maybe the coach saving them to use this year? Don’t know. Article could be wrong also. Guess we’ll know if she goes someplace else and has to sit out a year or not.

  7. Fan too

Does she have to sit out even if she wasn’t on scholarship? Do DIII players have to sit out if they transfer?

The maximum number of d1 scholarships is usually 15. Apparently she was recruited as a walk-on meaning yes, no-scholarship. Even if the coach has not used all of her scholarships, she can decide not to give a player her scholarship, at least not in her first year. Many times a coach may say to a player I dont have a scholarship for you right away (whether it be that they are all used up or she has things lined up for the next year in which case one is not available) but you can earn one for the following year or for your last two years etc. I do agree though, with all of the hype I did think that she was on full scholarship…didnt she sign an nli!? She has to sit out no matter what unless she takes the d2 or d3 route (which many players out of d1 often do to avoid sitting out or for better education etc (whatever the reason may be) Any d1 to d1 trasnfer Im almost positive, if you played in any d1 games you have to sit out the next year scholarship or not ( I could be mistaken though because part of the sitting out is because of the broken contract I think) . With that said you can petition the NCAA to get your year back and play right away. It all depends.Josh have you talked to Agguire!? any other trasnfers or college commitments/info? Best of luck to ANgelei hopefully she makes the right decision for herself this time!

    JOsh,

    Haldane??? Hastings? Greeley?

  10. young westchesta balla

No offense to all the other college athletes or soon to be college athletes but I’m pretty sure this is about Taylor Palmer’s commitment to West Virginia so if we could stay on topic that would be nice.

Congrats Taylor I saw you play this whole year & you stepped your game up tremendously especially in big games and was a great leader for your team. You were my MVP ! Congrats to all the other athletes as well but this is about Taylor can she get the respect please! thanks

  11. sad

Young weschesta’, I think having her story up all summer is a special honor know one else gets either. The discussion was held here for lack of anywhere else to have it. Relax…

  12. Girls Bball fan

    Josh,

A quick random check on BOCES shows most teams have less than 14 games scheduled. What was the final agreement by the school districts / section 1 on the number of games to be played this coming season?

  14. Josh Thomson

HD…18 is the number. Schedules are never really finalized by this point anyway, but teams will have two fewer games to schedule this season.

  15. runon

Oh it all just speaks for itself…..

  16. runon

I was told that Mt.Vernon Coach Moore is Taylor Palmer’s aunt.. If someone could confirm this I would be interested to know. It would explain a lot.

  17. Candy

    runon,

For your information Taylor Palmer is not Coach Moore’s Aunt. If anyone should know I would because I am her mother and if you are trying to imply that she was recruited by West Virginia because of her you are sadly mistaken.

She is an example of what hard work can do.

If you have anything else to say about the issue speak to me.

  18. Runon

I’m not really sure what the attack is about but I have heard from several very reliable people and Coaches that Mrs. Moore is Taylor’s aunt. Not of course Taylor being the aunt.. It’s only an observation not an implication. Are you the women that yells the whole game NUMBER FIVE GET UM NUMBER FIVE< YOU GO NUMBER 5?? It could be that part of the reason Mt. Vernon is so strong is because of certain parents behavior.

  19. Fan AA

RUNON WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, WHAT YOU ARE SAYING DOESN’T MAKE SENCE. I KNOW MRS. PALMER AND SHE DOESN’T DO THAT AT GAME. COME ON LET IT GO YOUR WRONG AND PEOPLE ARE NOT RELIABLE. SO LET IT GO.

  20. Fan AA

I’M FROM NEW RO AND I KNOW ALOT OF THE PEOPLE FROM MOUNT VERNON, THEY ARE VERY GOOD PEOPLE SO LEAVE THEM ALONE.
