Girls schedule swells at Slam Dunk

October
23

For the last couple years more than a few of you asked how Westchester County and its parks department could sponsor a tournament that treated girls teams like second citizens. I cannot validate whether your voices were heard or not. But what I can report is that your wish has, to a degree, been granted.

The 2009 Slam Dunk tournament at the County Center will play host to four more girls teams and four more girls games, thanks, in part, to a schedule expanded from three days to four. The girls — and now the boys — will be divided into two four-team tournaments with semifinals, finals and consolation rounds. The event will still include one non-tournament challenge game as well.

The Slam Dunk will not include the Class AA (Mount Vernon) or A winners (Albertus Magnus). However, it will feature several of the area’s top teams. One of the tournaments has an entirely local flavor. The other will include Section 9 power Kingston and Section 5’s Greece Athena.

One bracket hosts semifinals between Lourdes and Dobbs Ferry as well as Class B champ Nanuet and New Rochelle. The other draw will include Ursuline against Kingston in one semi and Greece Athena vs. Irvington in the other.

Good Counsel will meet Kennedy in the challenge game.

Here is the complete schedule:

Saturday, Dec. 26 —
Challenge game:
Kennedy vs. Good Counsel, 12 p.m.
Semifinal 1: Lourdes vs. Dobbs Ferry, 2 p.m.
Semifinal 2: New Rochelle vs. Nanuet, 4 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 27 —
Consolation game:
the semifinal losers, 2 p.m.
Championship game: the semifinal winners, 4 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 28 —
Semifinal 1:
Ursuline vs. Kingston, 2 p.m.
Semifinal 2: Irvington vs. Greece-Athena, 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 29 —
Consolation game:
the semifinal losers, 2 p.m.
Championship game: the semifinal winners, 4 p.m.

    Josh,
It is good to see that the blog is starting to get going for the season. I look forward to sharing another season with your analysis and coverage. Can’t wait to see all your pre-season stuff you post

  2. Section Fan

Good Job Josh. Another fun basketball season and coverage ahead.

  3. bball

Josh where can we find a complete schedule with both the boys and girls tournament?

  4. PlayD

FYI-Kingston paper reported today that Kingston Guard Rachel Coffey has verbally committed to Syracuse.

  5. ballboy

    Play D,
She has verbally committed to Syracuse, but apparently is still going to make her last visit to Temple. She is rated as the 27th player in the country by ESPN Rise

  6. HIGH TOPS

JOSH, WHERE IS JAKI GOLDNER PLAYING BASKETBALL I WENT ON THE BINGHAMTON BEARCATS HOME PAGE SHE IS NOT LISTED ON THE ROSTER?

  7. may

I hear she may have transfered to another school. Any confirmations Josh?

  8. Mountie Hoops

How old is Coffey???saw her last year and thought she was a great player but very mature looking player and someone told me over the summer she was 19(Aug of 2009)-she is back for a senior year at Newburgh(and is wiithout a doubt a top 25 prospect! but just wondering??lots of differnce between a 17 yr old senior and a 19 yr old senior)

  9. bballer

Jaki Goldner did transfer I thought but is back at Binghamton but not playing. Also, Coon is not on the roster at Albany any more where is she?

  10. h

Coon is at NYU. Coffey is at Kingston, not Newburgh, and it has been rumored that she is older for a long time. When she was young, 10 or so, she was playing with girls who are now soph’s in college, on the Hudson Valley Knights. She could have been playing up, but don’t think aau lets you start at 8 yrs old. Kingston coach pretty much gives a no comment when ask about her age, but says there is no eligibility problem. She should fit in nicely at Syracuse and the big east. I think there are tons of players in big east that are probably older than most students in their class.

  11. hoopfan96

It is a NY thing. One of the only states in the country that allows 4 year olds to start kindergarten. Most states have a cutoff of August or September depending when their school year starts. NY cutoff is dec 31st unless otherwise changed by a district policy.

  12. are youkidding

YOU MUST BE KIDDING -TRYING TO RATIONALIZE A PLAYERS AGE WITH AN EARLY START IN SCHOOL-GET REAL!

  13. hoopfan96

Not rationalizing. listing a possible reason of how one HS senior can be 17 and another 19.

  14. are youkidding

no its rationalizing if a player is 5 years old in Aug before starting school ahe would be at the most 18 in her senior year but who cares talented player at any age. good luck

  15. Dnice

    New Topic
The start of hoop season is right around the corner.
Josh what are you early predictions in each class?

  16. haldaner

Josh i am a die hard haldane fan…. what are your thoughts on the team this year??

  17. Timster

    Josh,

Great to see that the girls b-ball teams are getting more time at Slam Dunk. And it is nice to see teams that are not always there (Irvington, New Ro) are getting an opportunity to play the big house.

Now to the “other” problem: While it is great to invite some good teams from out of our County to play here at the Westchester County Center, it continues to be mind boggling that Our Lady of Lourdes, a team that hails from Dutchess county, always gets to play every year as the “host” team. I can think of many good Westchester teams that were shut out this year because of this peculiar and unwarranted favoritism. Frankly, there shouldn’t be a perennial “host” team from any County, just the best mix of teams from near and far (with some deference to “near”) that can be assembled together.

  18. Early Prections

    Class AA – Ossining
    Class A – Lakeland
    Class B – Nanuet

  19. *Predictions

    Oops.

  20. Section Fan

Class B IRVINGTON by a mile

  21. Good luck

Section fan, Nanuet only graduated a few players off a team that won a state title. With Kahn and Jentzen back, how are they not the favorites?

  22. Mike Hoops

    AA-Mount Vernon
    A-Pearl River
    B-Irvington
    C-Haldane

  23. haldaner

    Mike Hoops,

Excellent choice for class C!!! haldane should have a great set of guards this year with the Des Marais twins, and the star Milner playing a 3/4 yes?

  24. ballboy

Happy first day of tryouts to all the teams, there is nothing better than the hope that flows out of all the gyms on the first day. Good luck to all the teams!

  25. Predictions

    AA-Mount Vernon favorite / Ossining
    A-Lakeland favorite / Tappan Zee
    B-Irvington favorite / Nanuet
    C-Haldane favorite / North Salem

  26. PlayD

It will be interesting to see how Mount Vernon handles the success from last year.

  27. Mountie Hoops

    Class AA/Suffern upsetting Ossining…
    Class A/Pearl River
Class B/Nanuet (they are returning Kahn, and Jenzten)
Class C/don’t reallly know this class but heard good things about haldane

ok I am a little Rockland biases but am looking forward to some old Rockland rivalries being rekindled with the 2 Rockland leagues and crossovers

  28. interested

Can someone clarify the rumors coming out of Lakeland, please? I won’t mention any names here. Thanks.

  29. rumors

    Interested,

What rumors are you talking about? I might be able to help you out.

  30. HIGH TOPS

TORI JAROSZ SIGNS NLI WITH VANDY.

  31. Mountie Hoops

we heard that today in Suffern..if its true congrats to this young lady !!watched her last year own Albertus in the 1st half at county center but coach drop the ball and not use her as much in 2ns half thus losing

  32. bball fann

Congrats, Tori, tear it up in Nashville!!!

  33. PlayD

Metro Classic Results? Anybody have a link to the results of these games. I went on the website and have searched and I am not finding anything.

  34. I Luv Hoops

    Play D
The Burbs won by 20 or so, it wasn’t a contest. They are showing the game on MSG Channel.

  35. I Luv Hoops

    The MSG High School Channel…...........

  36. Predictions

Best Player in Section 1 last year, and will be this year too! Good luck at Vandy!

  37. Manny

so what is Postell doing post-Kentucky?

  38. HIGH TOPS

Manny, she is playing at westchester community college.

  39. ballboy

Section one met yesterday to discuss league alignments for next year, and the results are even worse than last year. You can go to hudsonvalleysportsreport.com for all the leagues, but one example of the leagues is a league that consists of Arlington being placed with Dover and Pawling. This is going to lead to a lot of schools trying to leave section 1. I know already that Beacon and Dover will be applying for membership in Section 9

  40. Bball Fan

Postell is doing really well right now at WCC and Im really excited to see what she will do for next year.

  41. Hoops

Any scrimmage result news out there?

  42. Runon

Ursuline. Is looking strog this year .They have been running under the radar and while some of the favorites are continuing to lose their elite Ursuline has been farming. This year many of the strong knicks players and Future Stars players who have gotten very little playing time are going to take the AA by storm this season.

  43. Here We GO Again

What in god’s name are you talking about “RUNON” the season is barely 10 practices old and already they are strong. If some of these young ladies didn’t see much time as you said in AAU what makes you think they will “STORM” anybody????

Tell us where you get these prognostications from?

  44. Fallball007

Ursuline did not look strong in fall play at putnam valley.. they looked so-so and when exactly don’t they farm

  45. PlayD

    ballboy,

The sections are set by the NYSPHSAA with specific geography. I don’t think schools can go in and out of sections. I could be be wrong. Does anybody have expamles to suggest otherwise?

  46. RUNON

Here we go again, you must have misunderstood me. They didn’t get much playing time on their school team because of the JRs and SRs. I have been watching these girls during the AAU season and many of them are on AAU teams, one being the LadyKnicks Elite. They are competitors this year you can mark my words…. Come back at me when the season is over .

  47. bball fan

look out shannon ray on fire seen her at fall ball

  48. h

Don’t know how it is done, but schools that are in sect. 9, that are in the geographical area of sect. 1 are Spackenkill, FDR in Hyde Park, Pine Plains, Red Hook, Millbrook. Think thats it.

  49. ballboy

    Play D,
The original intention of the Section’s was to set them up geographically, however schools are allowed to petition to move to a different Section. As was mentioned above various teams from Dutchess County have moved to section 9 over what they claim is less travel, or competition issues. I know that Beacon is strongly considering a move to Section 9 as is Dover if they are accepted

  50. hoops

    FallBall007
Fall ball means nothing and Ursuline had a few girls that aren’t even on the team playing with them (They are on Varisty B). But again they play most likely the toughest schedule around by having to play Kingston then maybe Greece Athena at the county center. Then they play Mt. Vernon, New Ro, etc… Also they go to Lourdes and have to play in their tournament where they will have two togh games to play.

  51. ???

tori jarozs may be the best player in section one now but she is no where close to what Cori Chambers was going into her senior year.

  52. HIGH TOPS

    ???, Who cares

  53. baller

TOri Jaroz was old news. I mean good for her but why was that a “rumor going around” Josh already posted an earlier post saying that she committed. Congrats to her for making it official i guess!

  54. HIGH TOPS

baller, what rumor are you talking about ? interested never clarified what the rumor was.

  55. JohnnyHoops

The question of the days is….
Will the Poo Poo Bandit make a return this year? I for one missed his insight on the goings on in Section One Girls Hoops last year!

  56. rocbball

I’m a rockland fan but there is no way that Pearl River beats Lakeland, did you not see the beat down they gave Pearl River at the county center last year? With the injury bug hitting Magnus this year I think itll be Brewster challenging Lakeland, but Lakeland eventually walks away with the crown.

  57. Predictions

I agree with Rocball. PR has a big void to fill losing Wilson. They have a talented underclass, but those are big shoes to fill. Brewster and TZ will present a tougher challenge, of course you can throw this out the window if one or two key players are injured on any team.

  58. Magnus

    Who is injured from Magnus?

  59. rocbball

The Richards girl is supposedly out for the year, and during one of their scrimmages i saw they had a few of their starters from last year in street clothes

  60. Big Dog

Who did Magnus scrimmage? How did they look?

  61. rocbball

they looked pretty good, i saw them scrimmage scarsdale but again they were missing a few starters from last year who looked like they have may have been hurt.

  62. fan62

the chong girl is good I will give her that but she is not a true freshman.

  63. HIGH TOPS

fan62, who cares neither was the girl from kingston.
