Live updates: Class B championship, Irvington vs. Nanuet

March
2

Update, 8:20 p.m.: Warmups are underway, but only one team can advance. Keep it here for updates on the biggest game of the season.

Update, 8:56 p.m.: Timeout Irvington. A basket by Nikki Saponaro puts Nanuet on top 5-0 three minutes in.

Update, 9:01 p.m.: A basket by Lauren Kahn gives Nanuet a 11-7 lead with 1:44 left in the quarter.

Update, 9:04 p.m.: Nanuet leads 15-13 after on quarter. K.C. Jentzen has six points, Sapponaro has five. Tara Gabelman and Lexi Martins each have four points for Irvington. The Bulldogs committed six turnovers.

Update, 9:13 p.m.: Nanuet up 21-18 with under four minutes left in the half. Marley Giddens is on the bench with three fouls.

Update, 9:26 p.m.: The game is tied 24-24 at halftime. This has lived up to the billing.

Update, 9:35 p.m.: Irvington has now pulled ahead after trailing much of the game.

Update, 9:37 p.m.: After a basket by Giddens, Irvington leads 31-26. It just forced a Nanuet timeout with 4:32 remaining.

Update, 9:44 p.m.: This is the Irvington team Gina Maher had hoped to see. The Bulldogs finished on a big rally and have pulled ahead 42-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Update, 9:55 p.m.: Irvington still leads by 11, 46-35 with 3:43 to play in the game. It had been a 9-0 run to close the third quarter that broke it open. Lisa Bucci scored four of those points and Martins had two big blocks. The Bulldogs have since maintained the edge.

Update, 9:59 p.m.: Timeout Nanuet. Irvington leads 48-35 with 2:43 to play. Martins just had a block on Kahn and scored on the other end. She has played a terrific game off the bench. Her improvement is such a difference for Irvington this year.

Update, 10:06 p.m.: Martins has 14 points and a series of blocks and Irvington leads 50-39 with under a minute to play.

Update, 10:14 p.m.: Irvington wins 55-44. As I said before, Martins had 14 points. Gabelman had 15. Jentzen led Nanuet with 24.

Irvington will meet the Section 9 champion on Tuesday at 5:45 at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie in the Class B regional semifinals.

Update, 10:20 p.m.: Irvington just received its gold ball. With the way it has played this year, there’s no reason to believe Irvington won’t be clutching more trophies later this month.

Update, 10:21 p.m.:
MVP: Riley Harrington, Irvington
All-tournament: Tara Gabelman, Irvington
Lauren Kahn, Nanuet
K.C. Jentzen, Nanuet
Amanda Viteretti, Kennedy
Kasey Heyda, Briarcliff

Update, 10:55 p.m.: Here are some final stats for Irvington: Martins had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks. Gabelman had 15 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and four assists. Harrington had eight points, three rebounds, four steals and four assists. And Giddins had nine points and eight rebounds.

    “Biggest game of the year”?

  2. Girlz Got Game

Nanuet’s 2-2-1 creates turnovers that lead to easy baskets…

  3. .

    Its Giddins, not Giddens.

  4. JayG

Gittens is one of the best allround players in sec 1

  5. Manny

How big is the crowd? would a lohud simulcast have hurt the ambience?

  6. .

congrats to all the irvington girls! they deserve the win after all their hard work!

  7. Girlz Got Game

    Congrats to Irvington…

  8. irene

Congratulations to the Irvington Bulldogs and to Gina Maher.

  9. love the game

I have to say that lexi martins deserved MVP, I know she is a freshman but she played the best.

  10. bulldogs

    riley harrington is amazing!

  11. THE FAN

    The Refs were terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Irvington had about 8 blocks in the 3rd quarter before the 2nd fould was called against them. 5 or 6 of the blocks were fouls but not called.

Now Nanuet was missing free throws so it wouldn’t have matttered. However, just a really bad officiated game.

#4 on Irvington committed the easiest charge in the 3rd quarter, yet got bailed out with a block call against Nanuet. She was fouling down, hit the defender like a missile and got the call, amazinggggg

Again, Irvington is better but the refs affected the game. They called more fouls in t he last 2 minutes against them then they did in the forst 12 of the 2nd half.

  12. Norman

Congratulations to a top flight Basketball program at Irvington HS and their Hall of Famer in Gina Maher!
Go and Bring home the State and Federation!

  13. nanuet fan

Congratulations Irvington, bring home the State and Federation. You have the best and classiest coach in the section.

  14. Stanner Grad.

A previous blog requested opinions about best coach. Moylan is excellent, Ricci is her equal, Adams and Vaccaro are also outstanding but none compare to Maher. She is the complete coach: extremely loyal to her players, knows x’s and o’s and an unbelievable class act as a coach and, more importantly, as a caring human being. I am not a parent and I have nothing to do with Irvington hoops. I’m simply telling it like it is.

  15. Another Nanuet Fan

Congrats to Nanuet for a great season.

Congrats to Irvington and good luck in the State Tourney. To add to the other NANUET FAN I was impressed with coach Maher at the end of the game as well. While the players were jumping around celebrating which they should she went over to the Nanuet bench to shake their hands and give a few of them some other words like Kahn and Jentzen.

  16. Stanner Grad.

    To THE FAN,

Saw a college game on TV tonight. Team A beat team B by 34. Once again the refs cost team B the game on a “no call” in the first half in a tie game. Shame on those refs!

  17. Rich Harrington

Congratulations Bulldogs ! This Sectional win was truly a team effort from a group of players who at one point or another were all MVP’s.

I have nothing but respect for the Nanuet players and Coach Fidalgo and hope Irvington can represent Section 1 half as well as they did after their win last year. l
Lauren Kahn, KC Jentzen, Amy Delva and Nikki Saponaro et al are wondeful players and have been a pleasure to compete with.

  18. The Fan

    Stanner Grad,

I said from the beginning, Irvington was better.

However, this was an 11 point game, not a 34 point game.

So that was a sad attempt at sarcasm.

Also, if Maher is the best why didnt she win last year when she had the better team?????

Stop comparing coaches, you sound silly.

Also the 3rd quarter when only 2 or 3 fould occurred is when Irvingtn won the game.

If you honestly think all of those “blocks” underneath were clean then you r nuts. I sat baseline and was amazed at what the Frontcourt of Irvington was able to do underneath without a whistle for a foul.

About 7 blocks in the 3rd, and 2 were clean the rest should have been fouls.

Also, I said it might not have mattered because Nanuet was bad at the FT line.

Just would have made for a tight game, could have went either way.

  19. Rockland Fan

    The Fan,
I was sitting baseline as well and I dont know what you were watching, all those blocks were pretty much from that one girl and looked pretty clean to me.

  20. Rich

I felt the excitement from 9,000 miles away. Consistent unselfish teamwork, ability to focus and a positive spirit propelled the Bulldogs throughout the season. They are everyone’s favorite win or lose. Congratulations.

  21. The Fan

Number 14 had 4 blocks that were fouls, but not called.

Number 22 had a lot of blocks, most were clean, but a couple she fouled with her lower body. All ball up top means nothing if your lower body fouls.

Irvington was better, deserved to win. That doesn’t eliminate the fact that the refs were terrible. I am from Westchester.

If those 3 are the best Girls Refs around, lord help us

  22. huh?

@the fan – please come take the course and pass the written and floor test and become a ref because I’m sure you’re prefect and you can do a better job. all talk no action – take the course or else don’t say anything

  23. come on

To Huh or College Ref or any other name you come on here with:

Stop telling everyone who comes on here and complains about the refs to take the test. Instead why dont you and your brethern get better at what you do! The officiating in Section 1 is terrible. Its not because you guys dont give an effort its just that with the exception a few refs the overall performance is bad and the 3 ref thing just escalated it.

  24. Snowed In

Congrats to Irvington on an outstanding 20-1 Record and the Gold ball. Now go out there and win the States and the Federation. Nanuet put up a great fight, but I do believe that the game against Briarcliff took a great deal out of them.

  25. huh?

if you don’t like the way things are then change it yourself, do a better job yourself or don’t complain

  26. come on

I have a right to complain when i travel to see a basketball game between hs players and I end up with hearing tweet, tweet, tweet, every five seconds and ruin the game

  27. The Fan

    huh?

I am a certified girls ref.

I am in my 2nd year, will never move up because its an old boys group.

The old guys run the show, or make that RUIN the show.

Btw, I got a 94 on the test. Was cake.

  28. huh?

    whats your name? prove it???

  29. come on

Now we’re talking. Nepotism at its best. In my earlier posts this is exactly what I was referring to. I hope more people come on and expose what really goes on. Same recycled guys doing the games

  30. ANDONE

Congrats to Irvington! A solid team with a player at every position. Cabelman did a great job containing Jentzen and the freshman#22 brought her game big time. Her presence on the court is a real game changer.
I really overdosed on B-ball this week but Josh maybe you can pull some strings and schedule Thursday night Irvington vs Mt. Vernon.

    IRV 64 Mt.V 59

  31. PlayD

Big problem with refs is when (and if) you get to Albany, will the refs call anything!! That being said you have be prepared to play whatever style the refs allow. Coach’s know what kind of game they are going to get by who is reffing their games. Teams that can play various styles are the ones that advance.

  32. what

PLAYD – that has to be the stupidest thing I’ve even heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Future.

Freshman in Section 1 playing very well..impressive

  34. Expert

Two great adjustments a half-time by coach maher.#1 switching bucci to guard Kahn was masterful.#2 Having the confidence in her defense to box out and rebound so her team could push the ball up the floor against Nanuet.

  35. Jake

Good luck to the Irvington players. I noticed they are still ranked #2 in the state. South Jefferson of Adams NY was ranked 1st. Only one Section 1 team had a common opponent with South Jefferson that was Albertus. They both played Indian river. SJ beat them 68 to 35. When Albertus played them in Utica they dominated and after the 1st quarter the score was 36 to 2 the final was 76 to 26. I think Irvington has a great shot at bringing another class B state title back to Section 1. Good luck girls!

  36. Josh Thomson

Jake, Even though I’m not sure you can base anything off a couple blowouts, you’re larger point is 100 percent spot on. If Irvington had never scheduled its game against Kingston it would absolutely be ranked No. 1 in the state because it would have a perfect record. Does that make sense? No, because Irvington clearly benefitted from its Slam Dunk experience. But it’s the way the rankings work, unfortunately.

  37. bearproud

It is nice to see hard-working always hustling Heyda get All-Tournament team. She and Weiner, on a team of 3 point shooters, often get overlooked, but without their efforts the ball doesn’t get rebounded or the proper outlet pass made so that another teammate can score. Then they go back to work inside and do it all over again and again.

Just FYI – Brairclif (and Weiner) has been at the County Center for the past 4 years along with Irvington.

Congrats to Irvington – do Section 1 proud for the 3rd straight year!

  38. FOOTBALLFAN

anyone get the video of the lane violation in the game between briarcliff and nanuet? Would be nice to see it…

  39. Snowed In

Bearproud…I do believe Weiner is a Center and Heyda is a Forward therefore it is their job to get rebounds and kick the ball back out or go up for a shot. It definately irks me to see that you would pick out two players to give praise to for their hard work. You had a whole team of Briarcliff Girls that worked their tails off the entire season and if NOT for a terrible call I do believe the freshman ties the game. Great job to alllll the girls. We shall see you at the County Center in 2011!
