Sad news

June
18

Sad news today. Former Ketcham guard Lisa Moray was killed today in a car accident. Former Carmel star Meghan Wood was a passenger. She was injured, but was able to communicate with police on the scene.

Obviously, it’s a terrible story. It happened on the ramp from the Sprain Brook Parkway South onto I-287 East. If you know the area, you know it is a terrible ramp.

You can read about the accident here.

Good luck to Meghan in her recovery and condolences to the Moray family. Very, very sad news.

Scarsdale grad named coach at Cal-Santa Barbara

May
19

gottlieb.jpegCongrats are in order for former Scarsdale star Lindsay Gottlieb, who was named the head coach at UC-Santa Barbara today.

There are a couple interesting things to note about Gottlieb. 1) She helped recruit Angelei Aguirre to Cal, where Gottlieb was an assistant coach, and 2) She played for Luke Vaccaro back in the 90s. Remarkably, she made it out in one piece. (I’m just kidding.)

I’m going to try to catch up with Gottlieb at some point soon. But for now you can check out the school’s release on her hiring here.

Chambers cut by the Sun

May
17

Former Ursuline star Cori Chambers was cut by the Connecticut Sun yesterday. The move came as a surprise to the Elmsford native, but she hopes to get added by another WNBA team this season.

chambers.jpgMy colleague Tony Pinciaro talked to Chambers and Sun coach Mike Thibault and has the story.

My take: Chambers is a great shooter. She ranks No. 1 all-time at Georgia, which isn’t an accomplishment to scoff at. She’s also still young (22), so I imagine she’ll have at least one more shot to catch on. If not, there’s always pro ball in Europe.

Anyone out there have an opinion on where Cori will land next?

Aguirre going to Cal

May
15

You’ve probably read the story by now, but if not here’s what unfolded at White Plains HS: Angelei Aguirre committed to play ball at Cal.

aguirre.jpgWhere the 6-foot senior is headed is impressive. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 6 by ESPN and No. 7 by SI in their respective preseason rankings. They return all five starters to a team that lost almost all its games to national powers, including three to national runner-up Stanford.

Obviously, the basketball program was appealing to Aguirre, but so was the school. Berkeley finished as the 21st-ranked school in the country in U.S. News and World Report’s 2008 list of America’s Best Colleges, and topped out as the No. 1 public university.

Aguirre made visits to Cal, Providence, LaSalle and DePaul, and nearly ended up at DePaul. They offered her a full scholarship on her visit to Chicago, but she liked the situation at Cal better. Both the university and the basketball program are stronger, and I know she prefers the warmer weather. (To those of you out there who aren’t geography buffs, winters are definitely warmer in California than they are in Illinois. Don’t believe me? Click here.)

Aguirre’s commitment ends an incredible four-year transformation for her that I hadn’t fully realized until during the ceremony. Her family moved her from Dallas and could’ve picked anywhere to live. The fact that they chose White Plains should not go unrecognized. Sure, the Tigers had great talent — a remarkable five starters from the 2006 team went on to Division I colleges — but Aguirre was a key piece on all four gold ball winners. This was the best run in program history by far (White Plains’ girls had won just won other Section 1 title before the 2004-05 season) and will forever be remembered. Had the family landed in Scarsdale (her father, Mark, said it was the other possibility at the time) the recent history at both schools may be changed. As one of my coworkers noted today, Aguirre and Jackie Alemany would’ve formed some tandem to battle Elise Bronzo, Danica Covington, Kim Adams and Liz Flooks, right?

Anyway, the other remarkable part of the afternoon was the tremendous outpouring of support for Aguirre. The crowd that packed the College and Career Center at White Plains High was a who’s who of girls basketball in the LoHud over the last few seasons. In fact, several members of the TJN all-star teams were there, including: all four D-I teammates from White Plains’ run and former teammate Nina Johnson, who now plays at Manhattanville; Nadia Duncan, Taylor Palmer and Patrice Wallace-Moore from Mount Vernon; Lauren Thomas of Rye Country Day (and formerly Ursuline); and teammates from this season, like Shelby Fields, Donika Rexhepi and Simone Tharkur. Many of them spoke and those who did cried (except Flooks, ever the competitor).

Aguirre was clearly overwhelmed. Her dad actually felt compelled to make the joke of the day, saying something along the lines of, “You think she’s perfect? Well, she’s not always perfect at home!”

It was a funny moment at an incredible ceremony…although I don’t think many people there believed him.

Coon headed to Albany

April
28

coon.jpgOne more college chip has fallen into place. Briarcliff senior Shelby Coon has committed to play ball at Albany on a full scholarship.

I spoke to Shelby today. She had whittled her list down to seven: Albany, Bucknell, Cornell, Boston University, Hartford, Vermont, and Rider. Obviously, it became harder to take visits because the Bears kept extending their season, but she went on a couple trips in recent weeks and decided she really liked Albany.

Albany finished 13-18 last season but posted a program-best 10-6 mark in conference. Coach Trina Patterson was named America East Conference coach of the year and recently signed a two-year extension.

It seems like a nice fit for Coon, who led Briarcliff in scoring and rebounding and was named MVP of the Section 1 tournament. With state and Federation titles and now this, her senior season went about as well as she could’ve hoped. Congrats to her.

Aguirre update

April
24

aguirre1.jpgJust wanted to let everyone know Angelei Aguirre expects to decide where she’ll play in college in a couple weeks. The White Plains senior went on an official visit today to Cal, which placed second (behind Stanford) in the Pac-10 last season.

The last I heard, Cal still had a scholarship available at the end of the high school basketball season. They were intrigued enough by Aguirre that a coach flew by redeye to watch White Plains against Kingston in the regional semifinals.

Obviously, when Aguirre decides where she’s headed I’ll post something here.
